Chapter 42 42
Chapter 42 42
Both of them froze. And for a second, all they could hear was silence. There was no blast or any explosion from the muzzle of the gun. No. All they'd heard was a metal click. That's when Blaze looked down at his weapon slowly.
The gun had jammed. Or maybe it was empty.
That one empty click sounded louder than any gunshot. Dom's heart pounded. He saw the anger, disbelief and rage twist in his face and he knew that was his time to step in and do something before his brother really did the crazy thing he was here to do.
"Guess fate doesn't want her dead." Dom said quietly in that dark tone as he approached quickly.
Blaze turned toward him with the fury scribbler across his face. "Don't even think about doing anything-"
He hadn't finished his sentence when Dom moved first. He slammed into him, sending the gun flying across the floor. It hit the wall and clattered to the ground.
"What the fuck is wrong with you?" Dom roared, grabbing Blaze by the collar.
Blaze shoved back, but Dom's grip was like iron. "You better get your hands off me before I fucking kill you!"
Blaze growled, reeking with rage but Dom did not feel threatened by any of that. He was prepared to teach his brother a lesson now that he had the chance. "Is that supposed to scare me, his?"
He shoved Blaze again, eyes wild. "I don't care what she did! You kill her and you'll start a goddamn war you can't finish. What do you think? You want to start a war when we are already in the middle of one already. Don't be mistaken, Blaze. You are my brother but that doesn't give you the right to be stupid. If you cross me, I will treat you like I'd treat every other enemy of this family. I'll kill you and nobody will do anything about it. Don't fucking test me because I won't fucking hold back! You think this shit ends here? You think I'm just going to let you kill her and allow you to walk away like nothing happened. That's not going to happen. I'm going to hunt you down and I'm going to fucking kill you without a care in the world."
Blaze gritted his teeth, breathing hard. His face twisted with pain and anger. "You should have thought about that too when you took Nicole. I should be the one saying those words to you because that's what I plan on doing to you. You started a war in the middle of the one we are already fighting and like it or not, ai am not going to fucking stop until I get my revenge. I don't care if Nicole almost killed that Lucy bitch. She deserved it. And she's lucky I wasn't the one torturing her because she'd be dead by now if it was me."
Dom’s voice dropped, deep and cold now. "Don't try to get yourself killed over a woman, brother. This is not how we are going to keep up the name of this family. This isn't you."
He shook his head as he said the words, trying to convince his brother but Blaze didn't seem like he was listening at all. He was more concerned about getting his revenge. For a very long time, the two brothers just stood there and stared at each other, chest to chest, breathing hard from the tragedy that would have ensued if that gun hadn't clicked.
The woman didn't move. She sat there, silent, watching them both with wide, glassy eyes. Blaze finally shoved Domenico away, staggering back a step.
His hands were shaking, but it wasn't from fear or the threat that he'd been given. No. None of that registered to him. He was shaking from the boiling anger to make Domenico pay for what he'd done. He was so focused on making sure that he kept his promise. Dom looked at him, shaking his head again.
"This isn't you, brother. You're losing yourself. And you have to stop. You have to come back and focus on what's important. Not going after helpless old women. Where is the courage in killing her? It only makes you look like a coward. Imagine adding a helpless aging woman to the least of lives you've taken. Huh."
He scoffed but it was a sound filled with disgust. Blaze said nothing, he just stared at the woman again. She was sobbing profusely now, sniffing and shaking in the chair where she was tied up.
Without another word and no desire to make things more tense, he clenched his jaw and turned away, making a mental note to make sure he settled the score another time.
Dom, on the other hand, watched his brothers, hoping that he'd spoken some sense into him even though it didn't seem like it. He didn't know if he'd stopped his brother or if he'd just delayed the inevitable.
Domenico pulled out his phone and tapped Locke's number after that before waiting for his right hand man to pick. Locke picked up on the first ring. Dom went straight to business.
"Get here now. I'm in the warehouse where the woman was tied up. Bring some men with you. Get her out of here immediately. Take her to the sage house. I don't want any stops or quiet routes. Also keep your comms active so you can alert me if anything happens. Understand?"
Locke's reply was quick. "On it. I'll move now. How many men?"
Dom thought for a second before he replied. "Take ten."
He glanced at Blaze who was now walking slowly towards the entrance. "And take her straight to the mansion. I don't want her to be seen by anybody."
"Copy."
The line went dead right after. Dom closed his eyes for a second. Then he made his way back to the woman, taking off the ropes that had been used to bound her to the chair while promising her that everything was going to be fine.
That didn't seem to work anyway, because she was still struggling and shaking and crying. And that, for obvious reasons, made his heart twist. It reminded him of his mother.
