Chapter 82 The Cage Break
Kieran's door was locked. Mara did not knock. Did not ask permission. She kicked it open. Wood splintered. Hinges broke.
Inside, Kieran sat on his bed. Eyes open. Staring at nothing. Not moving. Not breathing.
"Is he dead?" Zevran whispered.
"No. Look closer. His chest moves. Barely. He is alive. But suppressed. The shadow has taken control even though it is not his day. It broke the rules."
"Then we pull it out. Force it back to the cage."
"How? We do not have that power. Do not have that knowledge."
"Then we find someone who does. Luna. She knows old magic. Ancient binding spells. She can help."
They ran to Luna's chambers. Pounded on her door. She answered immediately. Alert despite the late hour.
"What is wrong?" she asked.
"The shadow. It took control of Kieran outside of its agreed time. We need to bind it. Cage it. Before it becomes permanent."
"That requires a specific ritual. Specific components. Specific timing. Do we have any of those?"
"No. But we improvise. We adapt. We do what we must."
"That is not how magic works. You cannot just improvise binding spells. Get them wrong and you make everything worse. Kill Kieran. Free the shadow completely. Doom everyone."
"Then what do we do? Just wait? Just hope the shadow returns control on its own?"
"We negotiate. We talk. We remind it of the deal. Of the consequences of breaking it. Sometimes words work better than force."
They returned to Kieran's chambers. The body had moved. Now standing. Looking out the window. At the sleeping city. At the peace.
"Shadow King," Luna said formally. "Why have you broken our agreement? Why take control before your day?"
"Because I realized something," the shadow said. Kieran's voice but layered. Ancient. "The deal was flawed. Four days of freedom is not enough. Not after a thousand years of imprisonment. I want more. I deserve more."
"You agreed to four days. Gave your word. Ancient entities do not break their word."
"Ancient entities also do not get tricked into terrible deals. But I was desperate. Eager. Foolish. Now I see clearly. Four days is an insult. A mockery. I want permanence. Want true freedom. Want to exist without returning to the cage."
"That was not the deal."
"Then we make a new deal. A better deal. One that serves both of us."
"What do you want?" Mara asked. She could feel Ash stirring. Interested. Curious about the shadow's proposal.
"I want shared custody. Half the time I control the body. Half the time Kieran controls. We alternate. We coexist. We both get to live."
"Kieran will never agree to that."
"Kieran does not have a choice anymore. I am stronger now. Each day of freedom made me stronger. Made me more solid. More real. I can suppress him indefinitely. Can keep him locked away forever. But I do not want that. Do not want to be a tyrant. I want partnership. Cooperation. He controls the body during the day. I control it at night. Simple. Fair. Beneficial to both."
"That is not fair. That is half his life stolen."
"His life was already stolen. By the curse. By the seal. By a thousand years of imprisonment. This way he gets some life back. Some freedom. Some existence. Better than nothing. Better than being completely suppressed."
"What about after? What happens when Kieran grows old? Dies naturally? You die with him?"
"No. I transfer. Find a new host. Begin again. That is my nature. I am eternal. Hosts are temporary. But I can make those temporary lives comfortable. Pleasant. Meaningful. If they cooperate. If they accept me."
Mara felt sick. This was exactly what future-Mara had warned about. The shadow taking control. Refusing to return. Becoming permanent. The first step toward disaster.
"No. I will not allow this. You gave your word. Four days. Then back to the cage. We will enforce that. Even if it means killing Kieran. Even if it means destroying you."
"You cannot destroy me. I am older than your kingdom. Older than your goddess. I have survived gods. Survived empires. Survived everything. You think a fragment-bearer can stop me?"
"I think a fragment-bearer and a dozen experienced warriors can stop you. Or at least try."
"Try then. See what happens. See how many die before you realize I am unstoppable."
The shadow moved. Faster than possible. Grabbed Mara by the throat. Lifted her off the ground.
Zevran attacked. His black wolf crashing into the shadow. But the shadow just swatted him away. Sent him flying through the wall. Into the hallway. He did not get up.
Luna tried to cast a binding spell. Her magic flaring. Golden light forming chains. The shadow broke them. Shattered them. Like they were made of glass.
"You see? I am beyond you. Beyond all of you. Accept this. Accept me. Or watch everyone die trying to stop the inevitable."
Mara choked. Struggled. Could not breathe. Could not think. She reached for Ash. But the fragment was quiet. Watching. Waiting.
"Ash! Help me!"
"Why should I? The shadow is offering something interesting. Something I want too. Permanence. True existence. Not hidden. Not suppressed. Not treated as a curse. If you merge with the shadow, if you accept its offer, we both win. We both get freedom."
"You are betraying me!"
"I am surviving. Like I always do. Like I always have. You are the one who refuses to adapt. Refuses to change. The shadow is right. Four days is not enough. You made a bad deal. Now fix it. Accept the new terms. Or die fighting them. Your choice."
Mara felt consciousness fading. Felt death approaching. Again. The sixth time. How many times could she die and return? How many times before death kept her?
A blade appeared. Silver. Glowing. It cut through the shadow's arm. The grip released. Mara fell. Gasped. Breathed.
Isla stood there. Holding Mara's own sword. Eyes blazing with fury.
"Let go of my mother," she said. Her voice cold. Deadly. "Or I kill Kieran. I kill the host. I end you permanently."
"You would not. Kieran is your friend."
"Kieran is already gone. You suppressed him. Killed him slowly. This body is just meat now. Just a vessel. I have no problem destroying vessels."
"Brave girl. Stupid girl. You cannot kill me. Cannot even hurt me."
"Watch me."
Isla attacked. Not with power. Not with magic. With pure skill. Pure determination. Pure rage. She moved like Zevran had taught her. Like Mara had trained her. Like a warrior born to fight.
She cut. Slashed. Stabbed. The shadow blocked. Dodged. But it was defending. Not attacking. Because Isla meant it. She would kill Kieran. Would sacrifice her friend to save her mother. To save everyone.
"Stop!" Mara shouted. "Isla! Stop! There has to be another way!"
"There is no other way! Future-you said so! The shadow merges with Ash! Creates something terrible! This ends now! Before that future happens!"
She stabbed forward. Aimed for Kieran's heart. The shadow caught the blade. Held it. Inches from death.
"You are serious. You would actually kill him. Kill an innocent host to stop me."
"Yes. Without hesitation. Without regret. That is what you made necessary. What you forced with your greed. Your refusal to honor deals. You did this. Not me."
The shadow stared at Isla. At her determination. Her resolve. Her willingness to sacrifice.
"You remind me of someone. Someone I knew long ago. Another warrior who would do anything to protect what mattered. She died. Fighting me. I respected her. Mourned her. Regretted killing her. I do not want to kill you too."
"Then let Kieran go. Return control. Honor your deal. And we find a better solution. A compromise. Something that gives you freedom without stealing his life."
"What compromise? What solution exists that serves both of us?"
"I do not know. But we find it. Together. As allies. Not enemies. Not captor and prisoner. Equals. Working toward mutual survival."
The shadow released the blade. Stepped back.
