Chapter 81 The Future’s Warning
Mara barely dodged. The attack came too fast. Too precise. Silver energy exploded where she had been standing. The same energy she used. Her own power turned against her.
"What are you?" Mara rolled. Came up fighting. Summoned her own silver light. "How do you have my face? My power?"
"I told you. I am your future. From a timeline where you failed. Where Ash consumed you. Where you became the next Oblivion. I came back to prevent it."
"Time travel is impossible."
"So is absorbing fragments of ultimate evil. Yet here we are. Both doing impossible things."
The future-Mara attacked again. Faster than before. Mara blocked. The impact sent her sliding backward. Her feet dug trenches in the stone.
"You are stronger than me. How?"
"Because I am not afraid of Ash anymore. Not afraid of darkness. I embraced it fully. Let it consume me. Became something new. Something terrible. And I regret everything."
"If you regret it, why are you fighting me? Why not help me avoid your mistakes?"
"I am helping. By killing you now. Before you make those mistakes. Before you doom everyone."
"That makes no sense!"
"It makes perfect sense. You think you can control Ash. You think you can make deals, set boundaries, maintain balance. But you are wrong. Ash is patient. Clever. It will wait. It will grow. And one day you will slip. One moment of weakness. One moment of desperation. And it will take everything. Consume everything. Become everything."
Future-Mara's attack intensified. She moved like water. Like shadow. Like nothing Mara had ever fought before. Every block was barely enough. Every dodge too close.
"I am not like you!" Mara shouted. "I am stronger! I will not lose control!"
"That is exactly what I said. In my timeline. Right before I lost control. Right before I killed everyone I loved. Zevran. Isla. Luna. Kieran. All of them. Dead because I was too proud to see the truth. Too stubborn to stop."
"You are lying! Trying to break my confidence! Make me doubt!"
"I am trying to save you! Save everyone! By ending this now! Before it is too late!"
Future-Mara unleashed everything. Pure power. Pure fury. The courtyard exploded. Buildings cracked. The ground shattered.
Mara was thrown backward. Crashed through a wall. Landed in rubble. Everything hurt. Everything bled.
"Ash! I need you! Now!"
"Already here. But she is using me too. Her version of me. We are evenly matched. This will not be easy."
"Can we win?"
"Maybe. If we use everything. If we stop holding back. But that means breaking promises. Breaking rules. Becoming what she claims we will become."
"Then we find another way. We defend. We survive. We wait for help."
"Help is not coming. Everyone is asleep. Resting from the battle. By the time they wake, you will be dead. Or she will be. One of you dies tonight. Choose which."
Mara stood. Bleeding. Broken. But standing. "I choose both of us living. There is always another option. Always another way."
"Then find it. Fast. Because she is coming again."
Future-Mara walked through the hole in the wall. Not rushing. Not worried. Just inevitable. "I know all your moves. All your tactics. All your tricks. I am you. You cannot surprise me. Cannot beat me. Cannot escape me. This ends only one way."
"You said you came back to stop me. To prevent your timeline. But if you kill me, I never become you. Your timeline never happens. You cease to exist. Why would you risk that?"
"Because existence as a monster is worse than non-existence. I would rather never be born than live with what I became. What I did. The people I killed. The kingdoms I destroyed. The darkness I spread. Death is mercy compared to that."
"Then why not kill yourself in your own timeline? Why come back to kill me?"
"I tried. Many times. But Ash would not let me. Kept me alive. Kept me suffering. This is the only way. Kill you before you absorb the fragment. Before the cycle begins. Break the chain of causality."
"But I already absorbed the fragment. Already made the choice. If you kill me now, Ash just transfers to someone else. Maybe Isla. Maybe Zevran. You solve nothing."
Future-Mara hesitated. "No. That is not... I did not consider..."
"You did not think this through. You are so focused on stopping me, you did not see the bigger picture. Ash does not die with me. It finds a new host. A weaker host. Someone less prepared. Someone who will fail faster. You are not preventing your timeline. You are accelerating it."
"Then what do I do? How do I fix this? How do I stop what I became?"
"You help me. You teach me. You show me what went wrong. Where you failed. So I can avoid your mistakes. So I can become something different. Something better."
Future-Mara lowered her hands. Power fading. "You think you can do better? You think you are stronger than me?"
"No. But I have something you did not have. I have warning. I have knowledge. I have you. Together we find a different path. A different future. One where both of us survive. Where everyone survives."
"That is optimistic."
"That is necessary. Now. Tell me. What was your first mistake? Where did everything go wrong?"
Future-Mara sat. Exhausted. Defeated. "The shadow. The Shadow King. I let it have its freedom. Four days as promised. But on the fourth day, it did not return control to Kieran. It took him completely. Killed him. Absorbed his body. Became solid. Real. And then it came for me. For Ash. It wanted to merge. To become something greater."
"And you fought it?"
"I tried. But I was tired. Wounded from the battle with Demetrius. Weakened from constant use of Ash's power. The shadow was fresh. Strong. Patient. It wore me down. Trapped me. And then it offered a deal. Merge with it voluntarily. Become partners. Or watch it kill everyone I loved."
"And you merged."
"I merged. Because I thought I could control it. Thought I could maintain my identity. But I was wrong. The shadow and Ash worked together. Pushed me out. Consumed my consciousness. I became a passenger in my own body. Watching myself destroy everything. Unable to stop. Unable to die. Just endless horror."
"How did you escape? How did you travel back?"
"I did not escape. I am still trapped. Still watching. This version of me is a projection. A desperate attempt to change the past. If you die, if the timeline breaks, maybe I cease to exist. Maybe the suffering ends. That is all I want. All I hope for."
Mara felt tears in her eyes. "I am so sorry. Sorry you suffered. Sorry you became something you hated. But killing me is not the answer. Fighting darkness with more darkness never works."
"Then what is the answer?"
"I do not know yet. But I will find it. Will prevent your future. Will stop the shadow from taking control. From merging with Ash. From creating you."
"How? The shadow is too strong. Too clever. It will find a way."
"Then I break the deal. Cancel the remaining three days of freedom. Send it back to the cage permanently."
"That will make it angry. Make it rebel. Make it take control by force."
"Then I kill Kieran. Before the shadow can take him completely. Before it becomes solid."
"You cannot. He is your friend. Your ally. You care about him."
"I care about everyone. And sometimes caring means making terrible choices. Sacrificing one to save many. Kieran would understand. Would want this."
Future-Mara shook her head. "You are wrong. Killing Kieran does not stop the shadow. Does not prevent my timeline. The shadow is not bound to Kieran. It is bound to existence. To darkness itself. Kill the host and it just finds a new one. Someone weaker. Someone it can dominate faster."
"Then what? What stops it? What prevents your future?"
"Nothing stops it. That is what I learned. What I realized too late. Darkness is inevitable. Eternal. Unstoppable. You can delay it. Redirect it. But never eliminate it. The only choice is how you face it. With fear or acceptance. With resistance or cooperation."
"You are saying I should give up? Let the shadow win? Let Ash consume me?"
"I am saying you should stop fighting yourself. Stop fighting Ash. Stop treating darkness as the enemy. It is part of you. Part of everything. The more you resist, the stronger it becomes. The more you fight, the faster you lose. Accept it. Work with it. Become whole. That is the only way forward."
"That sounds like surrender."
"That sounds like wisdom. Hard-earned. Painful wisdom. But wisdom nonetheless."
Mara wanted to argue. But she felt the truth in future-Mara's words. Felt the weight of experience. Of suffering. Of regret.
"If I accept Ash. If I stop fighting. What happens to me? Do I stay me? Or do I become something else?"
"Both. You stay you. But expanded. Enhanced. Complete. Light and darkness in perfect balance. Not fighting. Not struggling. Just existing. Together. As one."
"And that prevents your timeline? Prevents me from becoming you?"
"Maybe. I cannot know. Time is fluid. Uncertain. But it gives you a chance. A possibility. That is more than I had. More than I knew to seek."
Footsteps echoed. Multiple people running. Warriors responding to the noise. To the destruction.
Zevran appeared first. Sword drawn. "Mara! What happened? Who are you fighting?"
He stopped. Stared. Saw two Maras. Identical. Mirror images.
"Which one is real?" he asked.
"Both," they said together. Same voice. Same tone. Same timing.
Zevran looked between them. Confused. Frightened. "I do not understand."
"Neither do I," Mara said. The present one. The real one. "But I am learning. Now help me. Help her. She needs rest. Needs healing. Needs peace."
Future-Mara started to fade. Becoming transparent. Becoming less solid. "My time is ending. The projection cannot hold. But remember. Stop fighting yourself. Accept darkness. Become whole. That is the only path. The only hope."
She disappeared. Vanished like smoke. Like shadow. Like she was never there.
Zevran stared at the empty space. "What was that?"
"A warning. A lesson. A gift. I will explain later. Right now we have bigger problems."
"What problems?"
"The shadow. We need to cancel its remaining days of freedom. Need to cage it permanently. Before it takes Kieran completely. Before it merges with Ash. Before everything falls apart."
"Kieran will not agree to that. He made a deal. He will honor it."
"Then we do not ask permission. We act. Tonight. Before the shadow wakes. Before it realizes what we are doing."
Mara ran toward Kieran's chambers.
