69 - Attack
Xavier gazed at Lav blankly for a moment, trying to process her words. The Unseelie King’s underlings were attacking the Fae palace. But that was…
“Some of the nobles revolted against the Fae Queen.” Lav muttered as if sensing his doubt. “The place is chaos right now and the underlings will take that chance to-”
Before she could finish her words, Lav’s head fell to the ground as she was beheaded by some attacker from behind. Instantly, Xavier’s instincts went up ang he let out a low growl in warning as her body fell to the ground with a thud.
“Calm down, wolf boy. If I wanted to kill you, you’d be dead already.” Alre sighed as he appeared holding a sword dripping with red blood. “That thing speaking to you was an underling. Look at the body…”
Xavier turned his gaze to the fallen body, noticing it had changed. He realized whoever this Fae was, they were not Lav. They had probably used a glamor spell to look like Lav.
Alre kicked the body and it twitched. “We need to get moving. This thing won’t die because I beheaded it. I need to drain the magic but don’t have time.”
Xavier felt a little uneasy. He wondered whether to follow Alre and if this was really his mentor. He had almost fallen for the underling’s tricks and…
“We’ve had 568 fights with you losing every single one.” Alre stated. “Additionally, you’ve fought with Bia-”
“Alright. I got it.” Xavier huffed, smiling a little as his unease faded a little. “What’s going on?”
As he said those words, Xavier headed back into the room, grabbing anything important. Alre followed behind him, closing the door behind him and standing guard as Xavier moved.
“Like the underling said, the Unseelie King had some Fae stage an attack.” Alre explained. “Most of the Swords are dealing with them since they weak but it’s still not safe…
“They’re purposely causing chaos to kidnap your mate and the queen. Thankfully most of the chaos has been contained to the lower levels but the queen wanted me to ensure the princess’ safety.”
“Is Lav with the other swords?” Xavier asked as he finished packing a backpack.
He threw it over his shoulder before hurrying over to Clare’s side and picking up her carefully. He didn’t want to wake her up because she needed to rest however Xavier knew explaining everything when she woke up was going to be an interesting conversation.
She’d probably get mad at him but there was no way Xavier was going to put her in danger. Especially with how tired the magic thing was making her.
“No. She’s waiting for you outside the palace so you can escape all the chaos.” Alre stated. “Bia will take you to her…”
Xavier recognized the grim look on Alre’s face. “I understand.”
He knew instantly that Alre wanted to get back to the queen’s side as quickly as possible. The only thing that was stopping him was that the queen had ordered him to Clare’s side.
Otherwise, he would’ve stayed by his mate side and protected her.
“Take this with you too.” Alre murmured, pulling out a small bag from Goddess knows where. “It has some magical items. Open it once you get to the safe house. You can’t open before then. Keep Bia by your side and use her for any communication needed. She’ll be able to find me anywhere.”
Xavier nodded and Alre gave him a small smile. “You were a great student. Keep up the training and you’ll become the strongest wolf out there. Take care of the princess for us…”
Before Xavier could process Alre’s words, the Fae threw something at his feet, making a huge cloud of silver smoke explode in his face. Xavier was blinded for a moment but when he opened his eyes, he found himself in some strange place with Bia flying above him.
“Let’s get moving.” Bia cawed at Xavier.
Xavier silently nodded in head and Bia flew ahead with Xavier running behind her. They seemed to be in one of the palace’s many hallways. Perhaps one of the secret pathways Lav had led them through when they first came to the palace.
It wasn’t long before they came across an enemy Fae.
Bia flew straight at them, turning into her human form mid flight, hand going straight through their chest. The Fae dropped to the ground instantly as she turned back into her raven form and continued flying as if nothing happened.
Xavier was shocked at the sudden display of violence despite it being necessary to protect Clare and him. A small part of him was even a little glad Bia was on his side and willing to teach him her tricks.
A larger part of him, however, was frightened at what else the raven familiar was capable of.
He soon learnt of some of her fighting tactics as they continued running through the hallways, Bia putting a hole through anyone that got in their way.
Eventually they got outside where Lav was waiting with some strange animal Xavier had never seen. And that was a scary thought for him considering how much he had seen as a werewolf and after living in the Fae Court for some time.
The creature looked like a snake-like dragon, similar to the ones from various Asian mythologies, but instead of scales, it had a thick coat of blue fur and three heads.
“Get on!” Lav ordered, bringing Xavier out of his slight daze. “We don’t have much time.”
Xavier nodded his head silently, wondering how he was going to get on when Lav created a stairway using a bunch of vines. He quickly made his way up before sitting down on the creature’s soft back, holding Clare tightly in his arms.
Lav sat in front of him, wrapping some of her vines around his legs to hold him securely while Bia flew to Clare’s sleeping body and curled herself between Xavier and Clare.
“What-” Xavier started, his wolf silently growling.
“Just let me please.” Bia cawed softly as she closed her eyes.
Xavier wasn’t sure why but he accepted Bia’s strange request, turning his attention back to Lav who was getting the creature to fly. It leaped into the air, wings spreading out as it began flying.
“What is this creature?” Xavier asked, surprised by how there was no wind despite how high they were.
He could almost see the top of the Fae Tree as well as the raging battle growing down below. The sight caused a little concern. Just how big was this attack?
“This is the queen’s familiar.” Lav explained. “It’s past down from one queen to another. Some call it a phoenix because it dies along with the old queen before rising once more with the next queen. However, it has no real name save for the one her highness will give it.”
Xavier paused at Lav’s words. Something was no right with what was going on at the moment. He felt like he was missing a piece of the big picture. But before he could think of it any further…
Boom!
