Chapter 37


DAMIAN'S POV

"Is there something I shouldn't hear? you're confessing already," I mocked.

"Do you think I fear you?" Luke asked.

"I'm not asking you to either. I only asked a question and the guilt was eating you up from your inside," I said.

"Did you kill Dad," Leo asked. so straightforward.

"Did I kill him?" I returned the question.

"How would I know? if I knew, would I still ask you? you better don't let me find out you did something to him," he said. 

"Why would I kill him? what do I stand to gain? If I did kill him, I'd have made him announce me as the heir won't I? Or isn't that what you are thinking about?" I asked them calmly and they couldn't refute. 

"Anyway, the autopsy report would be out in three hours," I said then I left the room. I still had a lot of work to attend to. they wanted to be alpha yet they couldn't perform the simple task of reviewing files. I stand by my word, the pack would fall if left in the hands of any of them. 

When I got to the study, I started to sign and review documents with Kyle by my side assisting with any of my needs. 

"I need a cup of coffee," I said to him and he left. No questions asked. My hands were cramping so I stood up and walked to the window. Looking at the woods, I longed for freedom, my wolf crying for a run but I resisted the urge. As I continued to stare at the woods with longing, a lonely figure fell on my vision. 

It was the slave girl, Natalie. 

After the incident, I hadn't seen her, after all, she was banished to the laundry. I washed her as she struggled to carry the heavy load that was on her back, she fell after hitting her feet on a rock, 

she stood up again, dusted up her clothes, and carried the load and it reminded me of something. "When you fall, don't lie down and sleep, instead get up, dust up your clothes, and keep moving," That was what she just did. 

I watched her till she was completely out of sight before going back to my desk. Kyle isn't back yet. what could be holding him? 

I worked for another fifteen minutes before he came in. 

"Sorry I was late Alpha, I was figuring out something," he said, breathing heavily.

"What happened? Did you run?" I asked concerned. "Could it be rogues?" 

"No it's not rogues," he replied to my thoughts without me even having to ask him. 

"Then what?"

"It's your brothers," he said.

"What did they do this time?" 

"Well, Leo called all his female companions over to his room and they haven't come out yet, they are probably still at it, the music is still going and it shows no sign of stopping," he explained and I was so pissed. 

"How could he do that? Father hasn't been buried yet, I planned to indulge them for a little while, saying with time they would change, this is the disrespect of the highest other," I roared as I slammed my hand on the desk and the desk broke into two.

"That's not all,"

"What again?" 

"Lucas called Natalie to his room and they haven't come out since. it's been five hours," he said. 

"She's out,"

"How did you know she is out?" he asked curiously. "As far as I know, you haven't been out of this room in hours, so you don't know what is going on outside," 

"I saw her, not quite long, call her to my office," then I dismissed him. "Get me a cup of coffee, hand it over to her, and get somebody to change this desk," 

"Okay Alpha, but.." 

"how do they do their job? the desk isn't even strong," I cut him off and I saw his face twitch. 

"What happened?" I asked

"The desk is made of mahogany alpha,"

"So?" 

"and about the slave girl, she doesn't work in the kitchen now, you banished her to the laundry," he said and my face darkened.

"I'm the alpha, if I say so, who can stop me?" but he gave no reply, he bowed and went to do what I had instructed.

I tried to continue with the documents but with the thought of Leo and his blatant disregard, I couldn't concentrate. I stood up and stormed out of his office to his room, ignoring the slave girl and the coffee she brought. I owed Coffee an apology for today's stress but my patience has worn thin with these guys

When I got to Leo's room, I flung the door open and sent out all the girls. 

"Why are you angry brother? it's my business. if you want yours, there are still other ladies to choose from," he chuckled but I just ignored him, put off the music, and proceeded to get out of the room. 

"What do you think you're doing," he growled.

"I'm teaching you how to behave, I placed you in charge of Father's funeral ceremony yet you indulge in wine and pleasure?" 

"You put me in charge? No. I chose to do it myself and you have no right to question how I work. don't act like you know it all,"

"I'm not acting, I know it all," I dropped that reply then I went to my father's room, I needed to rant, even if I knew I wouldn't get a reply, I just wanted to talk to my father.

The burial was tomorrow. The elder's council had a closed-room meeting which we were not invited to so we don't know what the discussion was about but it was probably about who would become the alpha or not among us three. I have nothing to say about it yet I have so many things to say so I'd just drop the comment, May the best man win. 

I'm the best though.

not too long after, Kyle came up to Me and told me the elders of the Council sent for me. 

I knew what they wanted to see me for but then, I knew it would be hard to select me from my Brothers. the pack had a procedure to follow but why aren't they waiting till after my father's burial?

I went to Leo and Lucas immediately after I got the information demanding their presence immediately as an urgent issue meant to be discussed. 

"is it about father's death again?" Leo growled.

"why won't you let the old man be?" he continued. 

Lucas on the other hand didn't utter anything as he just continued staring at me unsure of what to say. 

"I'm not sure it's about father's death but I'd suggest we go to hear them out," I said persuasively.

"it's alright then, I'd be there," Leo said 

"Is there something bothering you Lucas?" I said noticing he hadn't involved himself in the conversation from onset. 

"It's nothing, I'd just go prepare for the meeting with the elders". he said and he excused himself.  

I knew something was up with Lucas as he has always been someone who likes to air his view on a particular matter. 

"I'll discuss it with him later, I should go to the elder's meeting first." 

I sent one of the guards to Kyle and he came running.

"What's the issue my Alpha?".

"get me my favorite Attire, I have a meeting today to attend with the elders" 

"I'm...sorry....but it's still in the laundry section. I'll call them right away to bring it" he said almost immediately.

"be very fast with that please" I instructed him. 

a few minutes later, a knock was heard on the door and I knew it wasn't Kyle. 

of course, he'd just call out to me before entering not knocking. 

"who's there?" I asked. 

"From the laundry, Alpha Damian" a feminine voice replied from the door.  

"You can come in," I said after hesitating for a while. 

"I was told to bring this to you by the laundress," she said still with her calm voice.".

"you....!!" I wanted to say something but I quickly restrained myself. 

"When did you return to the laundry?"

I should apologize for keeping her waiting when she brought me the coffee but it was another thing that came out of my mouth. 

"Why did you leave when I didn't dismiss you?" 

"I....I...I'm sorry Alpha" she muttered while kneeling to show that she meant what she said but her actions didn't mean anything, I could still see the fire of reluctance burning deep in her eyes. 

"em...I initially wanted to tell you to drop something for me but we'll see when I'm back from where I'm going" I said not thinking about what I wanted to say before it slipped from my mouth. 

"Okay, Alpha... Your wish is my command, your humble servant will be waiting," She said as she bowed and left the room. 

I pondered for a while when she left and I couldn't help thinking about her. She was the toughest slave I knew, and it showed that her father trained her well for the alpha position. She reminds me of me. 

"How could I think that of an ordinary slave girl? She might have been trained up as an alpha but isn't she here now working as a slave?" I questioned myself while dressing up at the same time. 

it was almost time for the meeting to start so I hurried down to the venue. I met Lucas there already and it showed that Leo and I was the one delaying them. 

"Where is the Alpha Leo?" one of the elders who appeared as the head of the Council asked me. 

"that jerk...!!" I exclaimed. 

"I can't believe he's not here yet" 

I was about to talk when he entered.

"greetings Elders," he said as he bowed and took a seat. 

One of the elders cleared his throat and started. 

"I'm sure you know why you are all called here" he started. 

"Please, can you tell us?" Lucas talked first. 

"Well then, since the last alpha passed away, it is expedient that one of you will become the new Alpha."

"Aren't you supposed to wait till after the burial?" I asked angrily. I knew that was what they wanted to discuss but I had to pretend to be sensible I couldn't wait for them to declare me as the heir.

"Yes, but it's better to do it faster, maybe we might announce the next alpha tomorrow?" elder 1 said. 

we all looked at one another immediately after he mentioned this and after taking a glance, we turned back to look at him and he continued. 

"so then, you all know that there are certain conditions that must be met before the emergency of the new Alpha." the elder continued. 

"The conditions are no other than the new Alpha having a proposed Luna and an heir to the throne". 

"This is to make sure he's ready for the position of the alpha, the mating ceremony is coming soon, be prepared," 

"a proposed Luna, an heir to the throne?"I asked myself. "Where can I get those? I barely left my study,"

"your father's burial is tomorrow and you all have to perform a rite tomorrow at the burial ceremony being the final rite for the alpha that passed away."

"the ceremony would start by 6 pm. Be prepared," 

"that's all" one of them concluded. 

We bowed and then excused ourselves.

Back to my own. 

"Why must the Alpha have a proposed Luna?" 

"why must he have an heir before ascending the throne?" 

these are things I didn't quite understand and I resolved to decipher them myself. 

Kyle rushed to me almost immediately I came to the from of the house. 

"How did it go alpha?" 

"Has the new Alpha been appointed?" 

"is it you?" 

I looked at him, unsure of what to say I went inside, with him closely following behind. 

After pondering for a while, I asked him some questions. 

"Kyle, the criteria for the new Alpha position is he having a proposed Luna and an heir. " 

"do you think I can be the new Alpha of the pack?" 

I was surprised when Kyle smiled and said "You will become the Alpha, my Lord, if you will it, you can do it," 

"shall I begin a search for a mate for you?" he asked. 

"No, the mating ceremony is soon, maybe we could find one then and I think I have someone in mind," 

"Who?" 

"tell Nathalia to bring me a cup of coffee please," I told Kyle.
