Chapter 34
Chapter 34
Natalia
Gentle sunlight across my face stirred me to wakefulness. For a blissful moment I basked in the soft linens and soothing quiet, a rare luxury.
Then memory crashed down - the desperate flight into the wilds, the humiliating recapture by none other than Damian himself. This gentle nest was a dragon's lair, my fear a phantomhed amidst delirium.
I jolted upright, ignoring the flare of pain along my ribs and feet. But the spacious chamber was empty save for myself. Damian was gone as if a figment, the hearth's embers burnt low. Had it all been some vivid dream?
Hissing at the raw ache of my injuries, I eased cautiously off the divan where I had apparently spent the night. Thick fur rugs muffled my limping steps as I explored warily, peering behind opulent draperies for any hidden threat. But found none.
The sitting room stood vacant, decorated in elegant masculine style. Heavy oak furnishings conveyed quiet authority, much like their owner occupied my conflicted thoughts. What game was Damian playing at now, rescuing me as a damsel in distress? I trusted little kindness from an Alpha heir.
Yet...the memory of his gentle care last night left me conflicted. He had tended me with his own hands, allowed me the dignity of his chambers rather than a cell. And his ardent vow to make amends sounded achingly sincere.
I wavered, hesitant to accept it blindly as truth but equally loathe to dismiss everything between us as deception. Perhaps Mary's advice to keep an open heart, even now, held wisdom. But I could not afford to be foolish or weak again.
The door latch turning made me whirl, breath catching. But it was only a servant, the elderly maid Kate who oversaw the Alpha's apartment. She gave a kindly smile.
"Ah, you're awake dearie. Feeling any better?" At my cautious nod she beckoned me to an intimate table spread with a generous breakfast. "Eat up then. You're skin and bones!"
I joined her hesitantly, comforted by Kate's motherly manner. She reminded me fondly of Mary as we shared the simple meal. Perhaps I need not be so alone here.
Between bites, I found the courage to ask, "Where is the Alpha this morning?"
Kate refilled my tea, clucking sympathetically. "Oh, attending some important meeting, I expect. He's a very busy wolf." She eyed the lingering scrapes marring my face and arms critically. "Let's get you a bath drawn after breakfast, and into some clean clothes. No need to rush about work just yet - you just focus on healing."
I blinked back tears at her sincere care. When was the last time someone had tended me so gently, without obligation or cruelty? It stirred an ache I thought long buried. Despite myself, fragile hope kindled that my life might change for the better under Kate's wing.
True to her word, Kate allowed me a long indulgent soak in the massive copper tub, washing away the caked filth of my wilderness ordeal. She tended each scrape and blister with salves, humming softly. For the first time in forever, I felt truly cleansed in body and soul. The high walls surrounding me no longer seemed so oppressive.
In the following days as my strength slowly returned, Kate kept me close as I adjusted to this new existence. My only duties were helping her tidy Damian's chambers and mend linens. We took leisurely meals together in the cozy kitchen, talking of small things. She was endlessly patient with my lingering wariness.
But the funny thing was I never saw him even once.
Gradually I allowed myself to feel the first tender shoots of contentment again. The specters of past cruelty had not followed me here, it seemed. For once no one monitored my every move with suspicion or sought cause for punishment. I was simply treated as another person worthy of kindness. It was all I had ever dreamt of in my lowest moments.
The only shadow marring my new sanctuary was Mary's absence. I missed her fortifying companionship fiercely and feared she might suffer without my buffer against bullying.
But Kate reassured me Mary had been assigned light duties away from past tormenters. It was a small relief.
Of Damian himself I saw little, only occasional glimpses as he went about his endless official duties. But knowing his quarters were my refuge now gave comfort. Perhaps Mary was right to hope kindness could dwell even in the powerful.
One afternoon as I was mending alone in the sitting room, the heavy doors opened unexpectedly to admit Damian looking drawn and weary. He blinked in evident surprise to find me there by the hearth, relaxed in this place I had once feared.
I rose quickly, dipping my head. "Welcome back, Alpha. I wanted to thank you for what you did." I smiled, I found I did wish to ease his burdens however I could. He had proven himself more than I ever dreamt.
I froze, the next words dying in my throat as Damian's cool gaze seemed to pierce right through me. His stern expression left no room for familiarity.
"There's no need for thanks," he said briskly. "I simply did what was required to retrieve a runaway slave. Nothing more."
His dismissive tone was like a slap, dashing the tentative hopes I'd built these past days under Kate's gentle care. I dropped my eyes, cheeks burning with humiliation. Of course. I was a fool to think myself anything but a possession in Damian's view.
"Forgive me, Alpha," I murmured. "I spoke out of turn."
Damian studied me a long moment, face unreadable. "See that you remember your place here," he said finally. "I allow you refuge in my household because your skills are useful. Do not mistake my tolerance for fondness."
I flinched, his cold words cracking my heart. So this was still a gilded prison, even without bars. Damian regarded me as one might a prized hound - worthy of care for what use he could extract, but never an equal.
My simmering anger must have shown, for Damian's eyes glinted dangerously. "You forget yourself, slave," he bit out. "Need I remind you what fate awaits those who defy me?"
I paled but forced myself to meet his merciless gaze directly. "No, Alpha. I understand perfectly."
Let him threaten me with whips and irons. I would not cower or beg. The only chains left to shed were those of fear. I had survived too much to be cowed now by any threat.
Something shifted subtly in Damian's expression, but his tone remained uncompromising. "Since you are recovered enough for insolence, clearly you can resume more suitable duties befitting your station." He considered me a moment.
"Report to the laundress at dawn daily until I say otherwise. The palace linens need attention."
Rage boiled up in me at the petty command. Damian knew full well the steaming laundry rooms were a hotbed of bullying and abuse. He intentionally condemned me back to misery.
But I bit my tongue until I tasted blood, determined not to give him the satisfaction of reaction.
Instead I sank into a deep, graceful curtsy that concealed my trembling fists. "As you command, my Alpha," I replied tonelessly.
Only once dismissed did I allow reaction to overtake me. Blindly fleeing to the shelter of my tiny chamber, I collapsed on the cot in choking sobs.
In the space of minutes, all my fragile hope had been crushed to dust. This pretty cage, my kindly nursemaid, the patient lessons - it was all illusory.
At his core, Damian Walker would only ever see me as chattel, forever beneath him. His arrogant contempt left no room for trust or understanding between us. I was alone.
Rage and anguish warred within me as I stared dry-eyed at the dark rafters. How could I have been foolish enough to let my guard down, to dream of friendship or justice in this den of wolves? There was no mercy to be found here.
As exhaustion gradually muted the tempest inside me, cold resolve took root. If Damian wished a hard, unfeeling slave, so be it. I would match his indifference and obey each cruel order without complaint.
Let him break my body and spirit as he would. I belonged only to myself now. And one day, I would be free.
I clung fiercely to that single bright point as darkness engulfed me - the promise of freedom burning defiantly in my heart against all threats and cruelties. Damian had not defeated me yet. And I would never fully yield, no matter what twisted torments he devised to try and chain my soul.
There lay my victory, however hollow for now. I was still unbroken.
