Chapter 31
Chapter 31
Damian
I stormed through the vaulted palace corridors, servants scurrying out of my path. Rare temper darkened my face like thunderclouds, warding off any foolish enough to address me.
There was reckoning to be had this day. None escapes justice under my authority.
The object of my ire soon loomed ahead - the carved oak door leading to the head cook's domain. Normally a hub of activity, the kitchens now stood ominously silent, word of my black mood preceding me.
I flung the door wide without ceremony, relishing how it crashed against the stone wall. All within jumped violently at my abrupt entrance. Stern eyes fixed on the cook where she huddled whispering with her assistants.
At my thunderous expression, she paled and hastened forward, wringing her hands. "Alpha Damian! What an honor to have you visit my humble kitchens..."
I cut off her sniveling pleasantries with a sharp gesture. "Enough. I have no patience for pretense when matters of discipline are at hand."
The cook quailed under my chilling tone. I continued icily, "You overstepped your authority gravely in regards to the slave Natalia. Harassment, deception, endangerment of those above your station..." I clucked my tongue as if in thought. "Such insubordination demands harsh reprimand."
"Please, my Alpha!" the cook burst out, all traces of arrogance vanished. "It was merely a small prank, meant in harmless fun..."
"Silence!" My voice echoed off the stone walls, silencing her weak protests. "You deliberately undermined my direct orders regarding meal preparations. And nearly cost an innocent girl her position through vindictive rumors."
I stepped closer, glaring down at the cringing woman. "Make no mistake. Your little 'pranks' nearly caused grave insult toward myself and my guests. All could have inferred the kitchens disregard my wishes and endanger my health."
The cook had gone chalk-white, understanding the unspoken implications. To deliberately serve foods a guest detested was a deep insult just shy of assassination attempts in certain circles. She had foolishly opened herself up to charges of treason.
"M-my deepest apologies, Alpha," she finally managed through bloodless lips. "I meant no true offense, only wished to humble a servant who seemed above her lowly station..."
I slammed my fist down, making her jump violently. "You are not the arbiter of worth here!" I thundered. "The girl Natalia has shown more gracious dignity in servitude than you with all your power. By singling her out for cruelty, you shame yourself most of all."
The cook seemed to shrivel smaller with each condemnation, whimpering pleas for mercy. But I was not yet done. This had gone on long enough.
"Your actions could be seen as brewing rebellion by undermining my authority," I continued coldly. "By law, that demands strict discipline. Guards!"
At my summons, two warriors entered, faces grim. The cook sank to her knees, clutching at my tunic like a penitent sinner. "No! Mercy, my Alpha! I will never overstep again, I swear it!"
I regarded her with undisguised disgust. "See that you don't. For I promise the punishment next time will be lasting." With a distasteful shake, I freed myself from her clinging grasp.
"Thirty lashes in the public square, then confinement to kitchen quarters for one moon cycle," I pronounced. "Consider yourself fortunate. Now begone, and pray your replacement proves less inclined to idiocy."
Ignoring the cook's wailing apologies, the guards dragged her from the kitchens to face immediate justice. The remaining staff averted their eyes, some poorly concealing satisfaction at the tyrant's downfall. I cared not if her loss bred resentment. There were always hungry replacements eager to fill such a prestigious post.
Let her serve as a lesson that none stood above pack law, no matter their station. The packs depended on our system of honor and obedience. I tolerated no disruptions to that critical order.
Temporarily satisfied justice had been served, I turned on my heel to leave. But something made me pause and scan the muted onlookers once more. "Where is the girl Natalia?"
The slaves traded uneasy glances until finally a stooped elderly woman stepped forward. "Please, honored Alpha, Natalia has fled into the wilds. She was deeply shaken by the cook's persecution, and despaired of ever regaining peace here. I begged her not to abandon her pack, but her heart was set. She has gone."
Cold dread washed through me. So I was too late - Natalia had already deserted her duties. My chance to make amends dwindled by the hour as she fled farther from my protection.
Cursing inwardly, I strove to keep my voice dispassionate. "Unfortunate. Should any here maintain contact or knowledge of her whereabouts, inform me at once. Her place is with her kin."
With that terse command, I took my leave. A million concerns spun through my mind as I hurried to my private chambers. Natalia was gentle-natured, but the wilderness would show no mercy. How would she survive alone and unguarded?
Guilt gnawed at me. If only I had quelled the vindictive cook sooner. My negligence had driven away the one soul who complemented my harshest edges. The one whose quiet wisdom reminded me what it was to lead justly and with compassion. I had failed utterly in my duties as Alpha.
But it was not too late. I could still make this right if I pursued Natalia swiftly. Bring her home where she belonged, under my protection. Explain that whatever shadows haunted this place, together we might still build a future guided by the ideals we both valued at heart.
Yes, I had wronged her terribly, but redemption was still possible if we faced it united. Healing the rift between us could begin the greater mending of divisions poisoning our pack like festering wounds.
Galvanized by this new sense of purpose, I hastily packed a light satchel of supplies. I would track Natalia on horseback and bring her safely home if I had to comb every inch of wilderness.
No matter how far I must chase this wounded lamb who had strayed from the flock through my own complacency. I bore responsibility now to make things right.
Before long I was saddling my swiftest courser, a sleek grey stallion named Stormwind. He pranced eagerly beneath me as I swung astride, sensing adventure brewing. I tightened my knees as an attendant handed up my packed satchel and bow.
"Ride swiftly and safely, my Alpha," he murmured. "And bring our lost sister back to her rightful place."
I nodded gratitude at the reminder of what was truly at stake here - not just a servant's insubordinate flight, but the loss of Natalia's bright spirit that so lifted up others. I could not fail in this.
With that resolution burning fiercely in my heart, I spurred Stormwind to a gallop through the main gates. We shot like an arrow across the bridge and fields, hooves kicking up clods of dirt in our haste.
The forest's shadowy embrace awaited, beckoning us onward toward the unknown. And somewhere within that wilderness roamed a precious soul who needed my aid, whether she wished it or not.
I whispered a fervent prayer to the gods that it was not too late to follow Natalia's trail and bring her back to where she belonged. Back to me, if I dared admit such selfish thoughts.
This time I would shield her as fiercely as I ought from the start. No harm would touch her again under my devotion. Her courage and idealism deserved protecting for the pack's sake and my own.
Please, let me find her safe so we might start anew. For I cannot imagine a future absent Natalia's wisdom and kindness to temper my harsher edges. We were meant to walk this path together, whatever shadows lurk along the way.
Have faith, brave one. I am coming. And I will see us both back to the light, whatever it takes. This I solemnly vow.
Wait for me, Natalia.
