Chapter 25
Chapter 25
Leo
Another mind-numbing afternoon of meetings with the pack council finally drew to a close. As the eldest royal heir, a heavy portion of administrative duties fell to me. Necessary work, but tedious.
What I craved now was entertainment - something to stir the blood after hours spent debating crop yields and settlement disputes. My thoughts turned to lovely Natalia and the spark she ignited within me. Perhaps she would provide some fun distraction from the day's monotony.
With that aim in mind, I went in search of the defiant slave girl who continued plaguing my thoughts. Our charged interactions were proving surprisingly habit-forming.
The way she met my gaze with subtle fire, never fully yielding or cowed despite her chains, fascinated me. Natalia was no groveling servant content with her fate.
The wolf still raged within. I admired that unconquerable pride and wished to tease more of it from her.
After inquiring with the kitchen overseer, I was directed toward the laundry house where Natalia was assigned today. Their sour supervisor provided a most illuminating account of this morning's scuffle between Natalia and the other slaves.
My lips quirked. Trust Natalia to ferociously defend her honor, propriety be damned. The image of her grappling furiously amidst soapy water like some avenging goddess was most entertaining.
The girl continued surprising me. Perhaps I would pay her a visit and offer my compliments on her spirit.
I found Natalia alone scrubbing the last of the massive piles of laundry, face set in concentration.
She startled slightly when I let the heavy door thud closed behind me. Those captivating dark eyes flashed as she took in my sudden presence. I offered a rakish grin.
"Well, if it isn't my favorite defiant slave. I hear you had quite the eventful morning."
I sauntered closer, noting how her spine stiffened subtly, slender hands clenching on her washboard. But her voice was steady enough when she replied. "An unfortunate misunderstanding, nothing more."
I waved my hand airly. "Oh come now, no need for modesty. I for one applaud you thrashing those foul-tongued wretches." I leaned in conspiratorially. "Tell me, how ever did you refrain from drowning them outright in those tubs?"
Natalia huffed impatiently, a delightful flush rising on her smooth cheeks as she wrung water from a shirt with quick jerks. "Of course I considered no such thing. They are packmates, however misguided." She flashed me a piercing look. "We must have compassion above all else, or we are no better than beasts."
My grin only widened at her passion. Natalia truly was a unique gem, defiant and fiery yet devoutly principled despite her wretched circumstance. Or perhaps because of it. Her spirit would not be easily cowed.
"Compassion is all well and good, but make no mistake," I mused. "Wolves like us can never quite tame the beast within. It is our nature, red in tooth and claw."
A wet slap punctuated my remark as Natalia loosed the laundry and slammed down the washboard with unusual vehemence. She straightened slowly to face me, uncowed.
"That belief only perpetuates evil, says it cannot be overcome. I refuse to accept that." Her voice rang with conviction. "The gods grant us higher reason and morality. We can master baser instincts if we try."
I cocked a brow, oddly thrilled by her daring contradiction. "Can we? Our history argues otherwise."
"Because your kind cling to the power that brutality grants you." Natalia jabbed an accusing finger. Rage flickered beneath her composed facade. "You convince yourselves resistance is futile, that channeling cruelty is inevitable. And so the cycle continues."
I was stunned. Never had a slave dared speak so bluntly to my face. They cowered and abased themselves, agreeing quickly to escape notice. But Natalia confronted me head-on, holding back no hard truths. It was immensely refreshing. And worryingly arousing.
Seeing she had left me momentarily speechless, Natalia drew herself up proudly before returning to her work. "Believe as you will. But I have faith we are all capable of defying nature for a higher purpose. Even you, Alpha."
I watched her bent head as she ferociously channeled that defiance into scrubbing grime from a shirt. What had I expected from this encounter - more gentle torment, perhaps an embrace stolen just to enjoy her flustered outrage?
Instead her uncompromising words had put me startlingly in my place. Natalia faced me not with weakness or fear but with bold conviction. She did not deflate my pride with cruel mockery, only punctured it enough to let in slivers of light. Unsettling, yet profound. I could not look away from this blazing spirit before me or ignore her challenge so simply delivered.
Natalia believed I could transcend the cycle of exploitation that defined my existence. Moreover, she dared to insist I had a moral duty to try, not for her sake but for the sake of my own humanity.
The words burrowed uncomfortably within me. I wanted to disregard them as foolish idealism, the hopeless dreams of a slave. But I could not shake an odd conviction that Natalia saw truth in me too easily obscured behind the gilded trappings of royalty. Somehow this defiant wolf perceived things within my own soul that remained veiled even to myself.
I backed away slowly, unnerved by her knowing stare as much as by my own racing thoughts. "You speak boldly, Natalia," I managed at last. "Let us hope such courage continues serving you well."
With that I departed hastily before she could dismantle my composure further. The words we had exchanged echoed in my mind long afterwards, refusing to fade back into obscurity as an amusing trifle.
Natalia had reminded me in bluntest terms that a higher potential existed within us all, no matter how deeply buried beneath fear and learned cruelty.
I could not simply laugh off that truth as naive idealism, however easier it might be. She had spoken it with the conviction of one who had endured the worst of fates without losing faith in redemption. I both admired and feared that unbreakable spirit.
I avoided crossing Natalia's path over the next few days as I wrestled internally with her challenge. It was easier to disregard the oppressed as ignorant weaklings. Facing the truth of injustice called my own privilege and motives into question uncomfortably.
Better to keep our kinds' roles neatly defined, slaves obedient in their place and nobles ruling with logic and reason. Blurring those lines threatened the very foundations of our society.
And yet, I could not deny a growing desire to see Natalia recognized as an equal, not merely a diverting amusement. She had shown courage and wisdom surpassing many with power. What right did I have to demand her deference and regard?
When word reached me Natalia had again been accosted by those resentful of our tentative bond, anger roused me startlingly. It was unjust that she suffered for simply attracting the notice of her betters, as if she controlled our capricious attentions. I would not stand for others tormenting what was mine to.
I froze mid-stride, stunned by the possessiveness of that thought. When had Natalia become "mine" in my own mind, not merely a passing distraction? Yet I could not deny her proud spirit and keen mind fascinated me as no other slave ever had. And the more she resisted my attempts at masterful conquest, the more determined I became to win her willing capitulation. But why?
For the first time, I acknowledged the slave girl had gotten under my skin and pride. I cared what Natalia thought of me as no other's opinion had mattered before. I wanted to win her esteem, not just titillated lust. Her subtle emotional power over me was as thrilling as alarming.
Perhaps in truth I feared she saw my own deficits all too keenly. It was simple to command authority as a decorated warrior and heir to the pack throne. But Natalia's adherence I must earn through my conduct, rather than demand by my privilege. I yearned to reveal my better self to her keenly perceptive gaze.
But these dizzying epiphanies merely chased themselves in endless circles within my skull, offering no firm answers. Inner turmoil was an unfamiliar sensation after long years dominating my emotions. I felt exposed as a flayed nerve before Natalia's principled resolve.
Later that evening, I glimpsed Natalia slipping away from the rowdy banquet hall, balancing an overladen tray. Impulsively, I followed, catching up to her in a darkened corridor. She paused warily at my hushed call, shoulders tensing.
"Alpha. Do you need me?" Her tone was cool but unafraid. I cleared my suddenly dry throat. "I wished to convey my respects for how stoically you endure the cruelty of your own kind. Your strength is most admirable."
Natalia studied me closely, clearly surprised by my sincere praise. At last she replied simply, "One endures because it is necessary and right. No other reason." With a respectful nod, she moved to continue on her way.
Desperate to prolong this encounter, I blurted out, "You are a surprisingly noble soul given your circumstances, Natalia. Would that your packmates saw that truth rather than resenting you for imagined slights."
She froze, cocking her head in guarded curiosity. Boldly I pressed on, "I mean only that you deserve greater kindness than the fates have granted. I would...make amends for that, if you would allow it."
Her eyes narrowed slightly at the unspoken overture. When she responded at last, her tone was carefully neutral. "You owe me nothing, Alpha. We must change unjust systems, not simply temper them with selective kindness. I seek no favors."
With that she slipped away, leaving me staring after her in frustrated admiration yet again. Even extended generosity she perceived as maintaining the status quo rather than speaking hard truths. I could not simply buy Natalia's esteem through favors as with other slaves. Her adherence would not come cheaply.
I laughed ruefully under my breath as I strode back to rejoin the banquet. How often I had chafed under the doltish bootlicking of my subjects, longing desperately for one with spirit to challenge my wits and pride. Be careful what you wish for, it seems.
Natalia had stormed into my privileged existence and left everything off kilter in her wake. And though it vexed me endlessly, I could not deny a growing thrill at the chase. However long it took, I was determined to capture the heart of that fierce, wild spirit as I had never desired anything before. Subduing her would be my greatest conquest.
So let the defiant little she-wolf continue resisting my advances for now. Her reluctance only stoked the flames higher. And we both knew any true wolf could run for only so long once his mate was scented. It was her nature to be conquered as much as mine to conquer. This tantalizing game between us had only just begun.
Someday Natalia would offer up her throat willingly, and we would both exult in my long-awaited supremacy. Her inner fire called to me as nothing else ever had.
And I would claim that radiant prize or die in the attempt. There could be no other outcome between two such forces of nature.
It was merely a matter of time and persistence. And I was nothing if not a patient hunter.
