Chapter 8: Into the Dark

Chapter 8: Into the Dark

The drive to the preserve passed in tense silence. Sophia sat in the back of David's SUV, watching the familiar streets of Millbrook give way to dense forest. Kai followed on his motorcycle, and she could see him in the side mirror, his posture rigid with barely controlled emotion.

At the preserve entrance, ancient Douglas firs stretched toward the darkening sky, their branches creating a canopy so thick that twilight had already fallen beneath them. Sophia stepped out of the vehicle, her small backpack containing basic survival supplies feeling impossibly light for what lay ahead.

"Final instructions," David said, his voice cutting through the evening air. "Thirty minutes head start. Boundary markers are clearly visible—reflective tape on trees. Cross the boundary and you forfeit."

He handed her the emergency beacon. "Sunrise is at six forty-seven. Survive until then without being caught."

"What exactly constitutes being caught?"

Nathan stepped forward with his predatory smile. "Physical contact. They touch you, you lose."

Derek pulled out a stopwatch, his scarred face gleaming in the dying light. "Thirty minutes starts... now."

Sophia took off running.

The moment she plunged beneath the canopy, everything changed. The forest seemed to pulse with life around her, every sound amplified, every scent distinct and meaningful. Her night vision was sharper than it had any right to be, and she could smell things that shouldn't be detectable—deer musk, pine sap, the mineral scent of flowing water.

This is what Margaret meant, she realized. Her abilities weren't just awakening—they were evolving.

She followed game trails that seemed to appear out of nowhere, her feet finding purchase on terrain that should have been treacherous in the darkness. After fifteen minutes of steady running, she reached a rocky outcropping that offered defensive advantages.

She settled behind the stone barrier, controlling her breathing and listening. Her heartbeat was elevated but steady. Her senses felt hyperacute, picking up details that would have been impossible for human perception.

A wolf's howl echoed through the trees. Then another, and another, until five distinct voices joined in a harmony that should have terrified her. Instead, it sent a thrill of recognition through her system.

The hunt had begun.

Twenty minutes later, she caught her first scent trail. Musky, predatory, moving with purpose through the undergrowth. Then another from a different direction.

They were coordinating, trying to box her in with military precision.

Time to move.

Sophia abandoned her hiding spot, slipping through the forest with newfound grace. But even as she tried to remain stealthy, she could feel them closing in. Five distinct presences, like heat signatures in her enhanced awareness.

They were herding her, driving her toward some predetermined point.

She changed direction abruptly, heading for the sound of running water. A stream would mask her scent and provide escape routes. But as she ran, something extraordinary began happening.

The forest itself seemed to respond to her presence. Branches that should have caught her clothing bent aside without her touching them. Roots that threatened to trip her flattened against the ground as she approached. It was as if the very trees recognized her as something more than human.

She reached the stream and waded in immediately. The current was stronger than expected, but her footing remained mysteriously sure on the slippery rocks.

Golden eyes appeared on the bank—five pairs reflecting moonlight, watching her with predatory intelligence. The largest wolf stepped into the water, and she recognized those brilliant blue eyes even in his transformed state.

Kai.

For a heartbeat, woman and wolf stared at each other across the flowing water. She could see the conflict in his gaze, the struggle between his nature as a hunter and whatever he felt for her.

Then the other wolves entered the stream, and desperation sparked something deep within her consciousness.

Without understanding how she knew what to do, Sophia reached out—not with her hands, but with something else entirely. Her awareness expanded beyond the immediate threat, touching every living thing within miles. Deer grazing in distant meadows. Hawks roosting in ancient trees. Rabbits hiding in their warrens.

Help me, she called silently.

The response was immediate and overwhelming. Every creature within the forest erupted into motion. Deer crashed through the undergrowth like thunder. Birds exploded from their roosts in shrieking clouds. Small mammals chittered and squeaked in apparent panic, creating a cacophony of distraction.

The effect on the wolves was immediate. Their coordinated hunt dissolved into confusion as they tried to process the chaos erupting around them.

Sophia didn't wait to see the outcome. She dove underwater, letting the current carry her downstream while every animal in the forest created a symphony of misdirection above her.

When she surfaced fifty yards away, gasping and shivering, the wolves were nowhere to be seen.

She had done something that defied every law of nature she understood. Something that should have been impossible.

But as she hauled herself onto the far bank, dripping and triumphant, she realized this was only the beginning. Whatever was awakening inside her, whatever her grandmother's legacy truly meant, she was finally starting to understand.

The forest had accepted her. More than that—it had answered her call.

She was no longer just Dr. Sophia Reeves, the disgraced physician seeking a fresh start.

She was something else entirely. Something that belonged in this world of shadows and moonlight and ancient secrets.

Dawn was still hours away, but the hardest part was behind her. Now she just had to survive until sunrise and prove she was worthy of the power flowing through her veins.

The hunt continued, but the hunted had become something the hunters had never encountered before.

And that changed everything.
