Chapter 42 - Grief

**Jessi's P.O.V.**

I really think it's funny that all these powerful women are scared of little ol' me. Kaida is a dragon, for crying out loud, and she looks like she's going to be sick as we walk to the training hall. Okay, I admit I like making them think I'm going to kick their ass when in reality, I just want to make sure they're prepared to fight. They can't always rely on their magic and abilities to get them out of trouble. They need to know how to take down a warrior. We haven't been training for more than a few minutes when Rmina runs over to me in a panic.

"Jessi, we have to go to Camilla now. The protection spell I placed on her tells me she's in danger." I grab her hand and Wyatts and feel other people touching me as I teleport us to the room where Camilla is.

The first thing I see are the two I left her with sitting on the couch facing away from us. Was Rmina overreacting? When we run over to the front of the couch, I scream in horror at what I see. Both of their necks have been slit wide open. I look in Camilla's bouncy seat and scream again as I fall onto my knees. She has blood running down her neck. I grab her from her seat, and I realize the blood isn't hers. She giggles while I cry and hug her tight. Wyatt wraps his arms around both of us. I turn and look at the bodies of Leela and Carlos just as Ellis, Natalie, and their mates run into the room.

"Mom, Dad? Nooooooo." Natalie screams as her legs give out. Brent catches her before she falls. Ellis drops to his knees in front of them and sobs while Stephanie hugs him.

"Who would do this?" I ask, looking at Hailey and Dante, who are also crying.

"We don't know, but someone killed a woman named Allison and her parents in the same way. I didn't think at first that it was related, but they also killed my parents this way a few years ago. I have no idea who could be doing this," Dante replies. How has a killer been sneaking around the pack without anyone noticing? I know they only recently started staying here, but five murders like this in a pack isn't normal.

"Davina." I look toward the fairy, who is crying in the corner next to Jock. She walks over to me slowly, and I hug her. "I need you to make yourself tiny and be a spy. We need to find this person before they kill anyone else."

"Okay." Okay." My heart breaks when I see how sad she is. She's a fairy; she's supposed to be happy and carefree, but all this death and negativity has to be getting to her. Hailey told me about their talk and how it hurts Davina's feelings when we make fun of her songs. I'm going to try really hard not to do that anymore, but I can't promise I won't slip up every once in a while. She kisses Jock and then turns into her tiny little light and is gone. I walk over to where Natalie and Ellis are.

"I'm so sorry about what's happened to your parents. I know it won't bring them back, but I promise we will not stop until you have justice." Natalie stands up and hugs me and Camilla.

"Thank you. I'm glad they didn't hurt Camilla." She returns to Brent as her tears continue to fall. Several people come in to carefully take Leela and Carlos away. When I turn toward Wyatt, I notice something written on the wall behind him.

"Look." Everyone turns to where I'm pointing.

*This is a reminder that I'm still here. I've been watching your pack for years. I think you've forgotten who the real monster is. You're lucky I don't kill pups; otherwise, Camilla would have had her throat slit like the others. The next time you leave her with someone, I may have a change of heart and want to wash my hands in her blood. I will continue to kill a member of your pack whenever I choose until you show me the respect I deserve. Fear me, for I am death.*

*Your local demon,*

*Malphas*

"What the fuck is a Malphas?" I ask, looking at the others.

"He's a demon. One of the worst there is. He's second in command to Satan, but they've had a falling out because Malphas wants to be number one. He preys on people's emotions and will pretend to be their friend only to kill them. I've had run-ins with him in the past because he wants a dragon to play with. He prefers to appear in his raven form, but he can also look like a man when he needs to. Hailey, I'm sure your legends will give him what he needs to become number one. He would be above Satan and move between the realms with ease." Kaida replies as Luka puts his arm around her.

"I don't understand. Why are the legends so powerful? I thought it was just the knowledge of shifters and that they exist and the laws we're supposed to follow." Hailey asks, looking around at the rest of us.

"It's all that and more. The legends also have the knowledge of the power every supernatural being holds. It may have started with werewolves, but the legends have evolved over time. Hailey, you're the only one who knows the secrets of the entire supernatural world. Your power is unimaginable, and that's why you have woken the evils of every realm." Why does Kaida's voice give me chills? I look at Hailey, and she's frozen. Obviously, Selene didn't tell her everything.

"So let me get this straight. You have this insane killer demon, the triad demons, and multiple other psychos after you because of these legends?" I ask Hailey while Wyatt cleans the blood off Camilla. Thankfully, she doesn't have a scratch on her.

"That about sums it up. I can't believe this thing was able to get in here without anyone seeing. I loved Leela and Carlos." Hailey looks numb. I turn to Wyatt and nod toward the door. I think we should leave them alone for a while.

"We'll be in our room. Let us know if you need anything." I tell them. Everyone nods as we walk out, followed by Rmina and Trevor. When Wyatt and I get inside our bedroom, I let all the fear I felt a few minutes ago wash over me and start sobbing while clutching Camilla. I keep a strong face in front of others, but the anguish I felt when we walked into that room and saw Leela and Carlos was overwhelming. I kiss all over Camilla's sweet face.

"I was so scared, Wyatt. I thought that monster killed our baby." He wraps us both in his arms, and I see he's crying too.

"I was scared, too. We'll get him. No one does something like this and gets away with it. I don't care what type of demon he thinks he is." Wyatt leads me over to the bed, and we lie down with Camilla snuggled between us. Sometimes, we need to be in our own bubble, and this is one of those times.

**Davina's P.O.V.**

I fly in my tiny form all over the pack but don't see anything. It didn't look like Leela and Carlos had been dead long, so the person couldn't have gotten far.

I look everything over once again and don't see anyone who looks suspicious. Dante must have made a pack announcement about their deaths because many people are crying. My body feels heavy; I don't like to be around so much death. There was a time when I thought I would be better off dead, and seeing it reminds me of those dark times of my life.

Something catches my eye just as I'm flying back to the packhouse. What was that? It seemed like a flash of darkness, and then it was gone. I fly over to the area and look around. There's nothing there. I have a funny feeling that I'm being watched. I need to get back to the others; I don't like this. I turn toward the packhouse when everything suddenly goes black, and I hear an evil voice that makes my insides shake with fear.

"I don't think so, little fairy. You're mine now."
