Chapter 66 New details
Viktor’s POV
I never told Alina about Adam or that I've known his willingness to betray Aleksander for years. She truly believed one of my men had done the dirty work to obtain insider information and schematics of Aleksander’s business dealings and properties.
But oh no, I had reached out to Adam shortly before I sent the failed assassin to that diner. It was all beginning to come together.
Lacing my hands together, I contemplated everything that I had been working towards to reach my ultimate goal:
Adam was out of the way.
Nina had a strong desire for revenge and didn't need to know Adam was helping me.
Russo was pissed about the trash contracts and was hopefully bringing in the family to cause an uproar.
Aleksander was vulnerable after this attack; he was mad and would make brash decisions.
The ball was in my court, and I needed to decide the best way to strike next.
Dimitri’s POV
I felt like death warmed over. My entire body hurt, especially my head, and no matter how much I didn't want to take something for pain, it was necessary.
Sitting up in my bed, I reached over, pulling two prescription bottles out of the bedside table's drawer. One was a nausea medication, while the other was a narcotic that I hoped would knock this pain out.
I've always hated taking medication ever since I was a kid. When Pakhan Maxim brought me to his house, medically speaking, I was in rough shape—months of inadequate meals and dumpster diving had damaged my organs in a way that took years to recover from.
Years of multivitamins, iron supplements, and stomach medications turned me into the man I am today.
Sighing, I shake my head as if that was gonna make me stop thinking of the past. Unscrewing the top of my bottled water, I pop the pills in my mouth and swallow.
Putting my hands behind my head, I lean back onto my pillow. The house was an utter disaster, and it would take weeks, maybe months, to restore it to even a fraction of what it had been before.
Something was itching at the back of my mind, but for the life of me, I couldn't think of what it was. Turning onto my side, I felt the medication working, easing me into a deep sleep.
Henry’s POV
I’d spent the rest of the day after surviving the boss’s wrath and the conversation I had with Maria. I couldn't even begin to describe the relief I felt from Maria’s forgiveness. Now my number one goal while the boss was with Maria was trying to get this mess of a house back in order.
The attack had left it in all matters of disarray. Bullet holes in the walls, blood stains in the flooring, giant holes in the walls and floors from grenades, leaky plumbing that I'm sure must be causing water damage, and a broken front and back security gate.
After leaving the boss with Maria, I spent the rest of the morning and early afternoon on the phone with every private contractor we'd ever used. The first contractor was already here, examining the front and back security gates and determining what needed to be done to get them operational, like yesterday.
I knew the boss would prioritize security above everything else, so I knew once that was squared away, we could finish everything else.
My phone buzzed. Looking down, I saw it was the plumber/general contractor, who I knew could fix all the water leaks and wall damage.
“Yo Henry, I can be there tomorrow at 7:30am sharp with the crew. All the same guys as last time.”
Quickly typing a message back,
“This is great news! Mr. Volkov will be very happy to hear this news. We will be expecting you tomorrow at 7:30am on the dot.”
Smiling, it seemed everything was coming together. I quickly sent a message to the guys who guarded the gates, telling them to expect them to be there tomorrow morning. Even though he said it was the same guys as before, I wasn't taking any chances after this last breach. Each and every guy would have to scan their fingers through our scanner, which would verify their identity without a doubt.
Enemies loved to use the ploy of sneaking in one or two people, or even an entire crew, under the guise of being workers. Having done multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan in the special forces, I didn't even want to remember how many bombings or ambushes had happened because forces loyal to Saddam, ISIS, or the Taliban had infiltrated our security checks.
I lost too many damn good men overseas to that bullshit of a ploy, so that when I came home, and the boss hired me, I vowed never to have that happen on my watch.
Setting my phone down on my desk, I picked up my drink and took a sip of my Coke. Closing my eyes tight, I tried my best to erase the images of carnage I've seen from my head.
PTSD WAS A MOTHER FUCKER.
Sighing, I knew this wasn't going to get out of my head any time soon.
Placing my phone in my pocket, I stood up and walked out the office door. Heading back towards my room, where a few rounds with the punching bag would hopefully do the trick.
Dimitri’s POV
Stifling a scream, I shot straight up in bed, the images of being tortured felt way too damn real. My breathing was erratic, too fast, with a bead of sweat crawling down my forehead.
“Fuck my life!” I muttered, seeing that it was nighttime already—the inky blackness of the night shining through the window near my bed.
I’m blaming this on the medication, as I knew deep down the nightmares weren't the medication, but a form of PTSD slowly creeping in to claim my soul.
Lying back down into the softness of my mattress, I stared at the ceiling. Maybe I can use this time to figure out everything that's going on with Viktor.
Before that thought had even finished flowing through my mind, I again shot up in bed.
“Fuckkkkkkkkkk!” I yelled, not caring who heard me.
I knew who the inside traitor was.
Adam……Fucking…..Belov!
Several people had told me in passing that they'd not seen him since before the attack, not even thinking to check security feeds or death records, just thinking he was off busy doing something for Aleksander.
Picking up my phone, I started typing, then scrolling through feeds and records like a mad person.
Nothing.
Absolutely nothing showed Adam anywhere near the compound before, during, or after the attack. The last footage of him showed him with a bag and paper files heading to his parked car.
“Goddamn traitorrr!” I threw my water bottle against the wall. Water and plastic are exploding in different directions. I'd worry about cleaning this up later, but now I have to get to Aleksander and tell him I found the mole.
