Chapter 141

Chapter 141

Evelyn's POV

Evelyn took her seat beside Reed, her movements measured, her spine straight, hands folded carefully in her lap. Carmen sat several rows behind them, Jayden asleep and safe in her arms, far from the intensity of the front rows.

Across the aisle, Damian was already seated. He looked different— not angry, not cold, just focused.

That alone sent a faint ripple of unease through Evelyn’s chest. She had seen Damian angry before, she had seen him distant, controlled, even cruel in his silence. But this version — composed, deliberate, eyes sharp with intent — was something else entirely.

Vanessa sat beside him, perfectly still.
If anyone else had been watching, they might have thought she was calm, collected, and unbothered. Her posture was elegant, her expression carefully neutral, lips curved in a way that suggested quiet confidence rather than fear.

But Evelyn had seen her mask fall off during the last sitting. She knew that stillness, it wasn’t peace, it was restraint, it was just a façade, so people don't know how bothered she really is.

The judge entered, and the room rose in unison. When everyone sat again, the clerk called the case, and the sound of Evelyn Carter’s name echoed through the courtroom like a ringing bell.

The attorney representing Damian stood first — a tall man with sharp features and a voice trained to sound neutral even when delivering devastating blows. He adjusted his cufflinks, glanced briefly at his notes, and then addressed the court.

“Your Honor,” he began, “at the previous sitting, the court heard testimony regarding the disputed DNA results that formed the basis of this case.”

Evelyn felt her stomach tighten.
He continued, “At that time, my client believed — in good faith — that there was sufficient cause to question the biological relationship between himself and the child carried by Miss Evelyn Carter.”

Believed? That was past tense. What has changed?

Evelyn’s fingers curled slightly into her palm.
“However,” the lawyer went on, “subsequent developments have introduced new information that directly impacts the foundation of this case.”
A murmur rippled through the room. The judge leaned forward slightly. “Proceed.”

The attorney nodded. “Your Honor, my client wishes to submit additional evidence into record. Evidence that was not anticipated at the time this case was initiated.”

Evelyn felt her pulse quicken, Reed leaned subtly closer to her. “Just breathe,” he murmured under his breath. “Whatever this is, it’s not about you anymore.”

She wanted to believe him, but she doesn't know what to expect yet.

The lawyer turned slightly, gesturing toward Damian. “With the court’s permission, Mr. Blackwood will address the court briefly regarding the relevance of this evidence.”

Vanessa’s head turned sharply, just for a second. It was subtle — almost imperceptible — but Evelyn saw it. The tightening of her jaw, the flicker in her eyes.

The judge studied Damian for a long moment before nodding. “Mr. Blackwood.”
Damian stood, the sound of his chair scraping softly against the floor seemed far too loud in the sudden silence.

He didn’t look at Evelyn, not once, and it broke her heart that since the case started, she could count the few times he had spared her a glance.

His gaze was forward, steady and controlled. “Your Honor,” he began, his voice calm but carrying effortlessly through the room, “when I initiated this case, I did so believing I had been deceived.”
Evelyn’s chest tightened, but she stayed still.

“I believed that the woman who carried my child had violated the terms of our agreement and betrayed my trust.” he paused. “I no longer believe that.”

The courtroom reacted instantly — whispers, shifting bodies, surprise barely restrained.

Vanessa’s composure cracked, not dramatically, not visibly to everyone. But her fingers clenched tightly in her lap, knuckles whitening.

Damian continued, “Since the last sitting, information has come to light that suggests my initial suspicion was misdirected.”

The judge raised a hand slightly, silencing the room. “Mr. Blackwood, be precise.”

“Yes, Your Honor.” Damian nodded once. “The evidence I wish to submit does not pertain to Ms. Carter’s actions during or before the surrogate agreement.”

Evelyn felt something loosen in her chest — not relief yet, but the fragile beginning of it.

“It pertains,” Damian said evenly, “to interference that occurred outside of her knowledge.”

The lawyer stepped forward smoothly. “Your Honor, with the court’s permission, we request to submit an audio recording obtained lawfully by my client.”

Vanessa inhaled sharply, it was the first real sound she had made since entering the courtroom. Her head snapped toward Damian now, eyes wide, disbelief flashing across her face before she could mask it.
“What recording?” she whispered, though no one answered.

The judge’s expression hardened slightly. “On what grounds was this recording obtained?”

Damian answered himself. “In my private residence, Your Honor. In my study. During a conversation between myself and Ms. Vanessa Hart.”

Evelyn felt her breath hitch, Vanessa went completely still. Reed’s head turned slowly, eyes narrowing as he looked from Damian to Vanessa.

The judge considered this carefully. “Was Ms. Hart aware she was being recorded?”
Damian’s voice didn’t waver. “The recording was initiated as a precaution. I did not anticipate a confession of this nature.”

Confession. That word landed heavily.

Vanessa stood abruptly. “Your Honor—” she started, her voice tight.

“Sit down, Miss Hart,” the judge said firmly.

Vanessa hesitated, then slowly, she sat.
Her face had gone pale.

The courtroom held its breath as the recording device was connected. There was a brief crackle of static, then sound filled the room.
Damian’s voice, unmistakable, clear, and controlled. And then Vanessa’s, emotional, strained, and defensive.

The words spilled into the courtroom, unfiltered, undeniable.
“I even went as far as sleeping with that scum… just to get pregnant.”

A collective gasp echoed in the room.
Evelyn’s heart slammed against her ribs.
Vanessa’s head jerked up violently. “That’s out of context!” she cried. “That’s not—”
The judge slammed the gavel. “Ms. Hart, one more outburst and you will be removed.”

The recording continued, Damian’s calm voice, Vanessa’s desperation, fragments of manipulation, jealousy, resentment. Everything, every single thing was heard by everyone in the room.

Evelyn felt frozen in place as the truth unfolded — not hers, but someone else’s.
When the recording ended, the silence was deafening.

The judge removed her glasses slowly. “Ms. Hart,” she said, voice measured but sharp, “you are no longer a peripheral party in this case.” “You are now a person of interest.”

Evelyn closed her eyes briefly., for the first time since this nightmare began, the weight shifted — not off her shoulders entirely, but enough that she could finally breathe.

This case was never about her, and now, the courtroom knew it.

The gavel struck.
“Court is adjourned until further notice.”

As people rose, voices erupting all around them, Evelyn remained seated for a moment longer, stunned, overwhelmed, her entire body buzzing with the aftermath.

Reed squeeze
d her shoulder gently. “It’s turning,” he said quietly. “Finally.”
She nodded, her eyes burning with unshed tears
