Chapter 124 Chapter 124

Chapter 124 Chapter 124
I urged Xavier on, my jaw clenching as I secretly channeled the rising current, preparing to dissolve the bonds holding me to the earth.

Keep burning the sky, I commanded in my thoughts, watching the distant arc of his flame tear through the clouds above the training grounds. The acrid scent of ozone and scorched stone drifted across the field where I stood, my bare feet planted in the cool grass, my concentration split between his assault and my own gathering power.

The earth beneath me thrummed with captured energy, my geomancy weaving through soil and root, building the pressure I needed.

My fingers curled against my palms, nails biting crescent moons into soft flesh. Around me, the other initiates had fallen back, their own attempts at the ascension trial collapsing as Xavier's pyromancy dominated the sky. Good. Let them scatter. Let him believe he faced only himself.

Ten more seconds. That was all I needed. The bindings were already loosening, my connection to the ground becoming negotiable rather than absolute.

I could feel the first delicious hints of weightlessness, my body's natural gravity beginning to yield to my will. Soon I would rise, invisible, unexpected—a second sun breaking through his firestorm.

But then I froze.

It happened without warning, without the gradual approach that might have allowed me to steel myself. One moment I was counting heartbeats, measuring the swell of power in my core; the next, something else flooded through me entirely. Something that had nothing to do with earth or air or the ascension trial at all.

The bond.

Xavier's presence crashed into my awareness like a wave against cliff stone, and I gasped, the sound lost beneath the roar of distant flame. My knees weakened. My carefully constructed concentration shattered into fragments I couldn't gather. The rising current I'd been nurturing dissipated into the grass, harmless, wasted.

I bit my lip hard enough to taste copper, searching the sky for him. There—his silhouette against the inferno he'd created, arms spread, head thrown back in the ecstasy of pure magical expression. He couldn't see me. The distance was too great, the light too blinding. But he felt me. I knew he felt me. The bond didn't care about sightlines or physical obstacles. It simply was, a connection forged in something deeper than conscious choice, and right now it sang between us with a frequency that made my teeth ache.

Maybe this was a vision, I told myself, desperate for any framework that would restore my composure. A dream.

A hallucination brought on by magical exhaustion and competitive stress. The ascension trial was known to produce altered states, moments where perception bent and reality became negotiable. That had to be it. That had to—

But I needed him.

The thought arrived uninvited and undeniable, resonating through my chest with the weight of absolute truth. My mind-shadow, I called him, though never aloud. The piece of him that lived in my thoughts without permission, without invitation, persistent as gravity and twice as inescapable. I needed his kiss. I needed his hands.

I needed the specific weight of him against me, the particular rhythm of his breath when desire made him careless.

I felt him again, stronger now, his mana caressing me with intimate familiarity. Pyromancy had always been described as violent, destructive, consuming—but this was different. This was Xavier's power filtered through the bond, and it touched me like warm water rising around my ankles, then my calves, then higher. It didn't burn. It heated. It awakened.

My body knew this sensation. My body remembered.

I was still standing in the trial field, I knew that intellectually. The grass was still cool beneath my feet, the sky still screaming with Xavier's fire.

But another reality was superimposing itself over that physical truth, a shared space where distance meant nothing and intention meant everything. The bond was pulling me there, and I was too weak, too willing, to resist.

His lips met mine without transition, without the logical progression of approach and acceptance. One moment I was alone with my ruined concentration; the next, his mouth was on mine, and I surrendered to the intensity with a sound I didn't recognize as my own. It wasn't the gasp of surprise or the moan of pleasure I'd expected. It was something broken open, something finally allowed.

We'd kissed before. Once, in the archives beneath the eastern tower, pressed between shelves of forbidden texts where the air smelled of dust and preservation magic. That kiss had been stolen, frantic, both of us expecting interruption at any moment. This was different. This had time. This had permission.

This had the bond amplifying every sensation until I couldn't tell where my nervous system ended and his began.

His hands traced my body with the confidence of cartography, mapping territories he already knew but chose to revisit. My skin tingled under his touch, not with the superficial response of physical contact but with something deeper, something that felt like his mana had found pathways through my flesh and was now exploring them at leisure. When his fingers circled my wrist, I felt the echo of that pressure in my own grip on his shoulder. When his thumb brushed the hollow of my throat, I tasted my own pulse in his mouth.

Our desire consumed us, or perhaps we consumed it, feeding on each other in a cycle that had no clear beginning. I lost track of whose hands were where, which breath belonged to which body. The bond had never manifested this completely before—had never allowed such thorough blending of sensation and intention. I could feel his arousal as distinctly as my own, the heavy pulse of blood in unfamiliar anatomy, the particular tension of muscles I didn't possess.

We were lost in a whirlwind of sensation, but it wasn't chaos. There was intention in every movement, even when I couldn't identify the source.

His tongue traced the edge of my teeth and I felt the texture from both sides, giving and receiving simultaneously. My fingers tangled in hair that might have been his or my own, the sensation of being pulled and of pulling indistinguishable.

Our bond deepened as we explored each other, the connection thickening like honey left in sun, becoming more viscous, more substantial. I could feel his thoughts now, not as words but as textures—impatience like rough wool, tenderness like worn silk, desire like something molten that threatened to reshape everything it touched.

He wanted me open, exposed, vulnerable in ways I'd never permitted with anyone else. And through the bond, I could feel how much he feared wanting this, how carefully he'd guarded the intensity of his need.

That fear undid something in me. I pressed closer, offering the vulnerability he sought, trusting the bond to keep me safe even as I made myself defenseless.

My back arched into his supporting arm, presenting my throat, my chest, the whole front of my body as invitation. His response came through the connection before his physical form could react—a surge of possessive heat that made my own arousal spike in sympathetic response.
