Chapter 111 110- Ending of Book One
That night.

I couldn't move. Not yet. Not when Xavier's weight still pinned me to the silk sheets, his chest rising and falling against my back in that rhythm we'd found together.

The hearth fire had burned low, casting amber shadows across the stone walls of the chamber, and somewhere beyond the rain-slicked windows, the city lay in ruins.

But here, in this room, we had built something untouched by the wreckage outside.

"You're trembling," Xavier murmured against my shoulder blade, his lips tracing the ridge of an old scar. Not a question. An observation. His hand slid from my hip to my stomach, spreading warmth where his seed still marked me.

"Not from cold."

His laugh was soft, breath stirring the hair at my nape. "No. I know what trembles you now." He pressed closer, and I felt him stir against my thigh—impossible, greedy, his. "I know what makes you shake. What makes you beg."

I turned in his arms, finally, facing him in the dying firelight. The mask he wore—Dark's mask, the black enamel and twisted silver—had slipped during our hours together, revealing more of his face than I'd ever seen.

His jaw, carved from stubborn stone. His mouth, swollen from my teeth. Those eyes, blue as the heart of a flame, watching me with an intensity that should have frightened me.

It didn't. Not anymore.

"Tell me," I said, my voice rough from screaming, from whispering, from saying his name until it became prayer and curse alike. "Tell me what happens now. When the sun rises."

Xavier's hand cupped my face, thumb dragging across my lower lip. The gesture was tender, but his eyes held shadows. "Livia is dead. The council knows. The people will know by morning." He paused, and I watched his throat work as he swallowed. "They'll speak of the King and his mysterious consort who struck down the tyrant's puppet. They'll whisper that the throne has new protectors."

"And us?" I pressed my palm to his chest, over the scar I'd traced earlier—the one that ran diagonal from collarbone to ribs, a souvenir from a blade meant for his heart. "What do we become when dawn breaks?"

His jaw tightened. For a moment, I saw the King—the calculating, ruthless man who'd built an empire from blood and strategy. Then his expression cracked, and Xavier emerged. My Xavier. The man who'd trembled when I touched him, who'd whispered stay like it was the only word he knew.

"We become as one," he said, and pulled me atop him.

I settled against his hips, feeling him hard and ready between my thighs. The silk sheets slid beneath my knees as I rose, then sank slowly, taking him into the wet heat he'd spent hours preparing. My head fell back, a sound escaping my throat—ah—high and broken.

"Slow," he commanded, hands gripping my waist with bruising strength. "I want to feel every inch. Every second."

I rolled my hips, grinding down until he filled me completely, until I could feel his pulse inside me matching the thunder of my own heart. "I love you" I breathed, watching his eyes darken. "So much—"

He surged upward, seating himself deeper, and my words dissolved into moans. His mouth found my breast, teeth closing around my nipple with just enough pressure to arch my spine.

I rode him like that—slow, deliberate, each movement drawing out the friction until we were both panting, both sweating, both lost in the stretch and slide of bodies refusing to rush toward release.

"Look at me," he demanded, releasing my breast with a wet sound. "Don't close your eyes. I want to watch you come apart."

I forced my gaze to his, even as pleasure built in slow waves, even as my thighs began to tremble with the effort of restraint.

“I love you, too.” The firelight caught in his eyes, turned them to molten gold, and I saw myself reflected there—wild-haired, flushed, his in a way that transcended masks and titles and the dangerous games we played.

"You're so beautiful," he said, the words rough as gravel. "So fucking mine."

"Yours," I agreed, and meant it more than I'd meant anything in my life of shadows and blades.

He rolled us suddenly, pinning me beneath him without breaking our connection. My legs wrapped around his waist, heels digging into the small of his back as he began to move—still slow, still controlled, but with a depth that made my vision blur. Each thrust pressed him against that spot inside me, the one that turned my moans into sobs, my thoughts into static.

"Xavier—"

"Let go," he whispered against my ear, his breath hot and damp. "I've got you. I'll always have you."

The promise shattered me. I came with his name tearing from my throat, my body clamping down around him in rhythmic spasms that seemed to go on forever—each wave cresting higher than the last.

He kept moving through it, prolonging the pleasure until I was wrung out, boneless, tears tracking down my temples into the silk beneath my head.

Only then did he let himself follow, burying himself to the root and spending with a groan that sounded like my name and a prayer twisted together. I felt him pulse inside me, hot and endless, and I welcomed it, welcomed him—with nails scoring his back and lips pressed to the sweat-slicked column of his throat.

We lay like that for long moments, joined and shaking, the fire crackling its approval in the silence.

"Again," he whispered into my hair.

I laughed, the sound breathless and disbelieving. "You're insatiable."

"For you?" He pulled back enough to meet my eyes, and I saw the vulnerability there, naked as his body.

"I've been starving for you. One night will never be enough. One lifetime will never be enough."

He moved inside me again, still hard, still hungry, and I gasped at the overstimulation, the tender sensitivity of flesh that had already been loved thoroughly. But his hands were gentle now, his thrusts lazy and deep, building pleasure like kindling a fire—slow, patient, inevitable.

"I'll find you," he promised between kisses pressed to my jaw, my throat, the hollow above my collarbone. "Whatever mask you wear. Whatever name you take. I'll know you by this—" he thrust deep, making me cry out—"by the way you fit around me. By the sounds you make when you're close."

"How will I find you?" I asked, my voice breaking on the words as he rolled his hips in a circle that hit every nerve ending I possessed.

He smiled against my breast, teeth grazing the underside before he answered. "Look for the man who burns. The one who smells of smoke and cedar and something darker." His tongue traced my nipple, teasing until I writhed. "The one who leaves breadcrumbs in shadows, hoping you'll follow."

We made love until the fire died to embers, until our bodies were exhausted and our hearts were full, until the first gray light of dawn began to stain the eastern windows. Then, finally, we slept—entangled, inseparable, dreaming of futures we dared not speak aloud.
