chapter 108
Alana’s point of view.
It had been three days since I had parted ways with Daniel. The media's reaction was split, with some applauding the studio's decision not to support a man with Daniel's baggage, while others seemed to overlook the glaring red flags and remained fixated on his looks. On the set, emotions ranged from annoyance about reshooting the entire movie to relief that they might finally work with someone who could act. I couldn't blame them; even a minor role could be a big opportunity if the movie succeeded, but if it flopped, all their hard work would be in vain.
I was meeting Naomi for coffee. I felt it was essential to discuss this with her, and she had been preoccupied with her ongoing divorce in the past few days. As I looked ahead, I saw Naomi entering the coffee shop. I had the first meeting with her and was grateful she arrived on time.
"Hello, Naomi. How have you been?" I asked, my tone friendly. She took a seat across from me, and her expression seemed weary as if she had already had a long day. I usually preferred morning meetings to catch people when they were more alert, but I understood that Naomi couldn't fit me in earlier.
"I'm doing okay. How about you, Alana?" Naomi replied with a soft sigh.
"I'm doing well, thank you," I replied, maintaining my pleasant demeanor.
"Alana... What did you do?" Naomi sighed and buried her face in her hands. It was an inevitable conversation, but I was relieved that she wasn't screaming or panicking.
"Naomi, I know that Daniel was a significant reason you accepted the role, but I can't work with someone who is facing multiple criminal charges," I began, keeping my voice low and studying her reaction. Naomi let out another sigh.
"So it's true, he's facing charges?" She asked, her hands nervously fidgeting.
"First, there will be a trial and such, but given the evidence, it's highly likely he did commit these acts. The movie means a lot to me as well, but having an infamous actor attached won't do it any good," I explained, leaving out the extent of my knowledge about his case, not wanting to risk anything.
"I understand. I can't believe I was involved with someone like that," Naomi shuddered, taking my word for it thankfully. "He's excellent at pretending to be a good guy," she admitted.
"Well, he is an actor, after all," I said with a playful smile.
"True," Naomi chuckled and shook her head. "But what does this mean for us?" she asked with a slight frown.
I took a sip of my coffee, contemplating how to best address her concerns. "Naomi, I understand this must be disappointing for you, and it's not an easy situation for any of us. But the studio is committed to moving forward with the project, and we have some exciting options for a replacement."
Naomi looked relieved that the project wasn't completely falling apart. "Who are they considering as a replacement? Do you have anyone in mind?"
I leaned in closer, lowering my voice. "We've reached out to a few talented actors, and while nothing is set in stone yet, we're in talks with a couple of big names who could bring a fresh perspective to the role. I believe that the right choice can still make this movie a success."
Naomi's eyes brightened at the prospect of working with a new lead. "That sounds promising. I want to be a part of this project; it's important to me. But I also can't be associated with Daniel anymore."
"I completely understand your concerns, Naomi," I assured her. "We'll ensure that this transition is as smooth as possible for you. And if there's anyone you'd like to recommend or work alongside, we're open to your suggestions. Your commitment to the film is valued."
“What does this mean for the movie?”
"Well, it means we've invested a significant amount, but we'll manage. I'm personally willing to put more of my own money into this movie," I confessed. After careful consideration, I felt comfortable using my personal funds to ensure the film's release on the original date.
"As for the actors?" Naomi raised an eyebrow.
"My friend Izabel has transitioned into a career as an agent. She claims to have clients who could fit the description for the character James," I explained and shrugged.
"So we'll be hiring completely different actors then?"
"Indeed, Daniel won't be in the movie at all," I confirmed with determination. Not a trace of Daniel's presence would remain in the film.
"What about these new actors?" Naomi asked, her nervousness evident. I knew she appreciated Daniel's appearance, which was a perfect match for the character.
"I'll conduct initial screenings and then send you their profiles so you can choose who you think would be the best fit," I assured her.
"And this won't harm the movie's reputation?" Naomi inquired once more.
"It's nothing we can't mend with a little promotion here and there," I reassured her.
"Okay," she nodded.
I then shifted the conversation, inquiring about her personal life. "How are things at home now?"
"We're officially divorced, and everything worked out in my favor. He did take our cat, though. It's sad, but he was the one who adopted her, and it was just before our marriage. So technically speaking, Mrs Kitty belongs to him," Naomi revealed, her lips curving into a slight smile as she was finally free from her troublesome ex.
"I'm sorry to hear that," I expressed my sympathy, especially about the cat.
"It's frustrating because I know he doesn't really care about her," Naomi sighed, picking up her coffee cup.
"I understand," I replied, offering her a comforting pat on the shoulder.
Naomi and I continued to chat while sipping our coffee for a bit longer. After she left, I made a quick trip to the bathroom before returning to the table to order some refreshers in preparation for my next meeting.
"Busy day?" Mj inquired, placing two pain au chocolates on the table.
"Yes, it's my next and final meeting," I answered with a smile.
"Is it Izabel we're waiting for?" Mj guessed, noticing our usual order.
"It is indeed," I confirmed, and at that moment, we spotted Izabel approaching our table. She moved gracefully, her hips swaying, clad in a perfectly fitting white suit.
"Hello, my sweethearts," Izabel greeted us, removing her sunglasses and taking a seat.
"It's great to see you again, Izabel. I saw your future husband at the coffee shop today," MJ mentioned.
"Yeah, thanks for reminding him that my favorite is blueberry lemon, not blueberry raspberry," Izabel chuckled, shaking her head.
"I'm just doing my duty, and I need to get back to it. I'll swing by when you're finished," MJ said as she took her leave.
"So, how have you been?" I asked, looking at my best friend.
"Between wedding planning and finding the perfect lead actor for you? Very, very busy but productive," Izabel replied, winking and pulling out her laptop.
"Speaking of which, I recently got a new client. He's been modeling since he was 14, holds art degrees, and has participated in local shows. He also has a substantial fan base that could help promote the movie," Izabel said excitedly, showing me a picture. "He's already submitted his audition for the role, and this would be his first major part," she continued.
I lowered the volume on the laptop and watched the first few seconds of the audition. I was already impressed, and the actor bore a striking resemblance to James. We'd only need to adjust his hair length slightly.
"Besides Lucas, I have two other options for you," Izabel swiped to show me the other actors.
There was no need, though, as I was already convinced that Lucas was the right choice for the role. There was no way Naomi would disagree. Alec was right; everything was falling into place.
"I'm counting on Naomi's approval, but I believe Lucas has just landed his first major role," I admitted, noticing Izabel's smirk.
"That's another actor I've managed to represent well," she said, beaming with pride.
"You're truly the best at what you do," I complimented, grinning. "Are you ready for our double date later?"
"Born ready. It's been too long for Kill and me," Izabel revealed, taking a sip of her refresher.
