Chapter 312 Follow-up Move

Chapter 312 Follow-up Move

They both returned to the courtyard; before long, servants arrived with six outfits and three sets of pajamas.

Rachel watched as each servant held up two outfits to show her, feeling a bit stunned. "Why so many..."

She was only staying one night after all.

It's not like she was moving into the Wright Manor permanently.

The servant smiled and replied, "Mrs. Wright said it's better to be prepared. Everyone has different tastes and clothing styles, so naturally you should have options. You can wear whichever set you like."

If you like them all, you can take them back to southern Dawnlight City tomorrow."

"I see, thank you. I appreciate your help."

Rachel came to her senses and nodded slightly to thank them.

The servants helped hang all the clothes in Benjamin's closet, politely said "you're welcome, get some rest," and left the room.

Benjamin asked beside her, "Shower first?"

She nodded, grabbed a set of apricot-colored silk pajamas. "I'll go first."

She took a nice hot shower in the bathroom. When she came out half an hour later, her wet hair still wrapped in a towel.

Benjamin found a hairdryer and made her sit on the sofa while he dried her hair.

This wasn't the first time he'd done this for her.

Compared to the awkwardness of the first two times, his technique was much more skilled this time.

In just over ten minutes, her hair was dry.

After putting away the hairdryer, Benjamin grabbed his pajamas and headed to the bathroom.

Rachel didn't move, still sitting on the sofa playing with her phone. A WhatsApp message suddenly flashed at the top of her screen.

The private investigator had finally reached out.
She lightly tapped her finger and opened WhatsApp: [Ms. Davis, Nancy has disappeared; She appears to have noticed my presence. I was afraid she'd spot me, so I increased my distance, but then I lost her.]

[ I searched around but couldn't find any trace of her, so I went back to the hotel where she's staying to wait, but she never came back. I felt something was wrong, so I asked the hotel staff, and they said she checked out this afternoon.]

[ I am very sorry, Ms. Davis. I'll do my best to find her.]

Lost her?

Rachel frowned, her features so deeply shadowed that her expression was unclear.
According to the private investigator's daily reports, since Nancy got out of prison, her routine had been pretty simple-with no contact with other people.

Most of her time was spent at the hotel. She hadn't even looked for a place to live or contacted her mother, Winifred.

Until now, Winifred was still searching everywhere for her, just trying to get her back to a normal life.

But for Nancy, who had been tempted by wealth, once she'd had certain things, she could never be content with an ordinary life.

Those things had become her obsession.

She was in darkness now, with no possibility of light.

Everything Winifred was doing was probably pointless.

She'd been a teacher for so many years, only to be betrayed by her own daughter in the end.

Rachel pressed her lips together. Her eyelid suddenly twitched, and an uneasy feeling rose in her heart.

Her instinct told her that Nancy wouldn't give up easily.

She must have another move waiting.

This was the main reason she'd kept the private investigator watching Nancy.

But now Nancy was beyond her control...

She tried to imagine where Nancy might go or would go. Suddenly, her phone vibrated, and a clear ringtone sounded in the quiet room.

It instantly pulled her thoughts back.

Another text message popped up at the top of her phone.

[At 10:16, Nancy will secretly use a key she copied before to enter Stargaze Gallery through the southwest gate, planning to set fire to the exhibition. Stop her now!]

Rachel's pupils contracted, and her heart clenched.

Her first reaction was to think it was absurd!

Set fire to the exhibition?!

Had Nancy gone crazy?!

Hadn't she had enough of those two months in prison?!

What also surprised her was that Nancy had actually made a copy of the Stargaze Gallery key.

She'd been gone from there for so long. Given her previous underhanded methods, if she really had a key, why would she wait until now to make a move on Stargaze Gallery?

As a friend, Nancy definitely knew how important Stargaze Gallery was to Rachel.

But...

Rachel listened to the pattering rain outside and the muffled thunder.

Why would Nancy choose to set a fire on a rainy day?

She frowned tightly and instinctively checked the time in the upper left corner of her phone. It was already 10:04, only twelve minutes until the time mentioned in the text.

The southwest gate was the least-surveilled of Stargaze Gallery's four main entrances and the farthest from the four exhibition areas.

Even the cleaning staff who regularly cleaned Stargage Gallery rarely went there.

However, that area happened to be where Stargaze Gallery's main circuit breaker was located, and at the end of the corridor was an elevator that went directly to the office areas on the second and third floors.

Thinking of this, she had to push aside all the emerging doubts in her mind again. Without further delay, she quickly found the security team captain's number in her contacts.

"Ms. Davis..."

Receiving a call from Rachel at this hour, the security captain was a bit surprised.

Rachel didn't waste words and asked directly, "It's not raining in southern Dawnlight City tonight, is it?"

The captain replied with some surprise, "Yes, after the rain stopped around 4 pm this afternoon, the sun came out for a while."

Her heart sank as she asked, "Who's on duty tonight?"

The captain answered truthfully.

Stargaze Gallery's security department had ten people including the captain, all working in two shifts. Usually night patrols happened once every two or three hours.

Rachel didn't hide anything. "Have someone guard the southwest gate immediately. Someone wants to burn down Stargaze Gallery tonight."

"Wha... what?!"

The captain jumped up. "Who would be so bold... I understand. I'll arrange it right away. Don't worry, Ms. Davis, leave it to me."

He hurriedly hung up and called the security guards on patrol to inform them.

When Benjamin came out of the bathroom, he saw Rachel sitting on the sofa, staring at the vintage vase on a distant shelf, as if in a daze, but with her brows furrowed, clearly anxious and restless.

He walked over. "What's wrong?"

Rachel snapped out of her daze and looked up into his deep eyes that always carried a faint coldness, making him seem unapproachable.

A fresh, pleasant cool scent also drifted to her nose.

Not unfamiliar.

Because when she showered, she'd used the same body wash.

She opened her mouth, about to explain, when Rachel's phone suddenly rang.

It was the security captain calling.

"Ms. Davis, we just saw a suspicious dark figure near the southwest gate, but when they saw us, they left. We couldn't catch up with them."

Rachel pressed her lips together. Although she'd called to warn the security guards, the matter still wasn't completely resolved, and she couldn't relax.

Now she could finally breathe a sigh of relief.

"Did you see the person's face clearly?"

"No, they were very cautious, wearing a black mask and a wide-brimmed hat. But based on their build, they shouldn't be tall. Ms. Davis, do you think we should call the police?"

Call the police? What would she tell them?

Without any solid evidence, she couldn't very well say she'd been tipped off by a mysterious text, could she?
