Chapter 303 Lady Macbeth
Chapter 303 Lady Macbeth
As expected!
This Rachel really was someone with deep schemes and endless tricks up her sleeve!
She distanced herself completely with barely any effort. Then she flipped the script, made them the villains, and expected Aurora to do damage control.
Aurora was furious to the point that her chest felt like it might explode.
She had lived for more than fifty years. Aside from those ten or so years when her mind had been clouded and her memory unreliable, when had she ever suffered such humiliation in front of so many people?
Even Jessica treated her with respect.
But ever since Rachel showed up, everything changed.
The plan Aurora had painstakingly devised had barely begun before Rachel exposed it piece by piece. She had not even had the chance to carry it out properly before everything collapsed.
She never got a chance to properly execute it. And then she couldn't even keep up the act anymore.
Under everyone's gaze, seeing Claire's hesitant, aggrieved, and helpless expression, half her strength drained away as she leaned against her niece.
No matter how unwilling she felt, she had no choice but to swallow the unfamiliar bitterness rising in her throat.
And she couldn't let anyone else catch on.
Otherwise, knowing Rachel's personality, she was sure Rachel wouldn't hesitate to tell Benjamin and Jessica about her attempt to fake illness and frame her, or even expose it directly in front of all the guests.
Aurora slowly took a deep breath and began arranging her words carefully in her mind.
First, she gave a mild reprimand to her niece. "Miranda, that was not appropriate behavior."
Then she began her explanation,"I was walking over here just now when suddenly my chest tightened. I felt short of breath and nearly fainted. Fortunately, Rachel happened to pass by at that moment and helped me up."
Then she put on a pleasant, smiling face,"Thank you so much. If you hadn't helped me just now and I had fallen, who knows what kind of trouble that might have caused?"
Her acting skills had improved.
Rachel knew very well that Aurora must be cursing her fiercely in her heart at this moment.
But what of it? As the saying goes, those who try to harm others often end up harming themselves instead.
She gently and humbly played along with Aurora's performance,"Mrs. Wright, you're too kind. It was nothing worth mentioning. There's no need to thank me."
After finishing her sentence, Rachel casually glanced toward Miranda Rivera.
Aurora was nearly driven to the brink of fainting from anger.
Miranda was the only girl of her generation in the Rivera Family. Naturally, she had grown up surrounded by affection and indulgence from the elders.
However, when she appeared in public, she usually maintained proper manners and carried herself with elegance.
She took another deep breath, pushing down the frustration in her chest.
She continued pleasantly, "Rachel, please don't blame Miranda or Claire. They truly meant no harm. They were simply too worried about me and became flustered in their concern."
With the excuse laid out, Miranda naturally understood Aurora's meaning. No matter how dissatisfied and unwilling she felt, she had to force it down.
She worked hard to maintain a calm and natural expression as she apologized to Rachel.
Rachel did not continue to dwell on the matter either. She simply smiled faintly and gave a small nod in acknowledgment.
She didn't forget to add a reminder,"Ms. Rivera, it's understandable that you misunderstood me today. But if something similar happens in the future and you misjudge someone else, things might not end so easily."
"Sometimes even what we see with our own eyes may not be the full truth. It would be best if you tried to correct this habit."
Whose influence had caused Miranda to act this way?
The implication was crystal clear.
Claire's heart sank. She knew Rachel was deliberately trying to drive a wedge between her and Miranda.
Wasn't she basically saying she was using Miranda as a pawn?
Aurora's silence at this moment could easily be interpreted as tacit agreement. Such silence might quietly plant seeds of suspicion in Miranda's mind and even in the minds of others nearby.
However, if Claire spoke up to deny it or attempted to explain herself, it would only make her seem overly defensive.
And she certainly could not apologize like Miranda had just done. If she did that, it would be equivalent to admitting that her earlier words had intentionally guided Miranda and the others toward misunderstanding Rachel.
It seemed like anything she said would be wrong.
Claire truly had not expected things to develop this way.
She had merely come over to see what was happening, yet somehow Rachel had cornered her into such an awkward position.
Her fingers slowly tightened into a fist. Only then did she realize that a thin layer of sweat had formed in her palm without her even noticing.
She took a few steps forward, seemingly shielding Miranda behind her.
She showed no sign of guilt, responding neither humbly nor arrogantly, "Ms. Davis is right. Miranda is young and innocent, she doesn't think as much as Ms. Davis does. If our behavior earlier made you uncomfortable, then I will apologize on behalf of both of us. I'm sorry."
Claire truly was a two-faced person.
Look at this verbal artistry—in just a few sentences, she'd made Rachel the one at fault.
Meanwhile, Claire and Miranda appeared to be the innocent victims who had suffered unfair treatment but were still choosing to be generous and magnanimous.
The situation flipped in an instant.
How impressive.
Rachel's eyes remained calm and steady, without even the slightest ripple of emotion. She quietly observed Claire, who looked just as composed.
This was, counting from when they'd met, the first time they'd been so openly confrontational in public.
Before, they'd at least maintained a polite facade.
Today was the closest they'd come to a complete falling out.
Although their cooperation for the upcoming art exhibition had not yet concluded, Rachel was not the type of person who would endure endless grievances for the sake of maintaining appearances.
That kind of method that only moves yourself while pleasing your enemies—only fools would do that.
Even if their relationship completely broke down today, Rachel was confident that she could still act perfectly cordial when necessary later.
She paused for only a few seconds. Then she asked calmly, her voice cool and steady. "Ms. Chase, are you familiar with Macbeth?"
The non-sequitur caught Claire off guard, leaving her visibly confused and uncertain.
Although she instinctively felt that Rachel's words carried a hidden implication one that was probably not favorable to her refusing to answer would only make it appear as if she were retreating.
She nodded lightly. "Macbeth is one of Shakespeare's most famous tragedies," Claire replied calmly. "I've read it many times since childhood, at least ten times. I've also watched several stage adaptations over the years."
Rachel smiled faintly, her voice clear and measured. "Then you must remember Lady Macbeth. Her story is quite cautionary, wouldn't you say?
"Especially that famous line 'Out, damned spot.'" She tilted her head slightly, as if pondering the meaning. "I've always found that line particularly thought-provoking." Rachel's smile deepened slightly. "Don't you think so?"
