Chapter 72 Unexpected help
Aloria
I feel the weight of despair settling heavy in my chest, every breath a battle against the suffocating fear that grips me. The children’s screams echo around me, each cry a dagger piercing my heart. I’m losing them, losing control, and that agony is worse than any wound I could ever suffer.
Just as I feel the darkness closing in, a high-pitched sound pierces through the chaos. It’s shrill and unnatural, cutting through the cacophony like a knife. I freeze, my body tense, straining to identify the source. What is that?
And then it happens. A sudden panic ripples through the birds, their wings flapping wildly as they veer off course, their beady eyes wide with fear. They scatter, abandoning the children in their mad dash to escape whatever threat looms. My heart races, the sudden silence filling the air like a miracle. But what just happened?
Before I can process it, a figure bursts through the edge of the forest, moving with a speed that leaves me momentarily stunned. “Daphne?” I breathe, recognizing the witch from the forest. Her long hair whips behind her like a banner as she strides toward me, eyes fierce and focused.
“Get the children!” she commands, her voice cutting through my haze of confusion. She doesn’t hesitate, moving with purpose as she begins ushering the kids away from the chaos, her presence radiating strength. I’m momentarily taken aback by her sudden arrival, but I quickly shake off my surprise and rush to help her.
“Daphne, how did you know?” I ask, my breath coming in quick bursts as we gather the children, checking for injuries, ensuring they’re safe. “How did you know what to do?”
Her eyes flicker to mine, a knowing gleam shining through the worry. “I’ve seen it before,” she replies, her voice steady despite the urgency of the moment. “Those birds… they’re not just creatures of the forest. They’re controlled… remotely… by a black witch.”
A chill runs down my spine at the revelation. “A black witch?” My heart sinks at the implications. “Who? Why would they target us?”
“Power and probably gold,” she says simply, her tone grave. “They thrive on chaos, on fear. It’s a means to an end, a way to instill dominance. But it’s not over yet. We need to act quickly before they regroup.”
I nod, my mind racing. “What do we do?” The weight of responsibility crushes me; I can’t let this happen again. Not now that I’ve finally found a place where my brothers and the other children can belong.
“First, we need to gather the children inside and have them checked out,” Daphne instructs, her eyes scanning the area for any remaining threats. “Then we’ll create a barrier to keep the birds out. If they come back we will be prepared.”
As we round up the last of the frightened children, I can feel the adrenaline coursing through my veins. The laughter that once filled the air has been replaced by trembling breaths and wide eyes. I can’t let them see my fear. Not now.
“Listen up!” I call out, gathering the kids close. “You’re all safe now. Stay close to me and Daphne. We’re going to protect you and get your wounds attended to.”
Arly and Arthenon cling to my sides, their small hands gripping tightly as they look up at me with wide, trusting eyes. “Aloria, are we going to be okay?” Arly whispers, his voice trembling.
“Yes,” I promise, forcing a smile despite the turmoil swirling within. “We’re going to be okay.”
Daphne kneels beside us, her expression fierce. “We’ll need to act fast. I’ll cast a protective barrier, but it will take a moment to gather the energy. Aloria, keep the children calm and focused. They can sense fear, and we need them strong.”
I nod, determination igniting within me. “Okay, everyone, I need you to breathe with me. In and out. Then we slowly walk inside.” I demonstrate, inhaling deeply, my chest expanding, and I’m relieved to see the children mirror my actions.
Daphne closes her eyes, her hands lifting as she begins to chant softly, a melodic incantation that fills the air with a warm energy. I can feel it wrapping around us, a gentle embrace that soothes the panic in my chest.
The world around us shifts, a shimmering light enveloping us, and I glance around, my heart racing. The birds have retreated for now, but I fear they’ll return. I can’t let my guard down.
“Daphne, what can we do to help?” I ask, urgency lacing my words.
“Keep the children focused, and draw on your own strength,” she replies, her eyes still closed, her voice steady. “The more we channel our energy together, the stronger the barrier will be. We’re not just protecting them; we’re standing against the darkness.”
I take a deep breath, feeling the pulse of my own power surge within me. I can do this. I have to do this… for my brothers, for these children, for the peace we’ve just begun to taste.
“Okay, everyone. We’re going to help Daphne,” I declare, my voice ringing with newfound strength. “Imagine your light… the joy, the laughter, everything we’ve built together. Let’s send it to her. On three! One… two… three!”
As we channel our energy, a brilliant light erupts, illuminating the clearing around us. The laughter and joy that once filled this place return, vibrant and alive. I can feel the warmth wrapping around us, pushing back the shadows threatening to encroach once more.
Daphne’s eyes snap open, and a fierce smile breaks across her face as she guides the energy, weaving it into a protective shield. “Yes! Keep it coming! We’re almost there!”
With the children’s laughter ringing in my ears and the light growing ever brighter, I feel a surge of hope. And with the barrier in place we get the kids i side were we can get them cleaning and band-aided.
