Chapter 46 The Golden lycan
Aloria
I stand frozen beside River, my heart pounding its own frantic melody in my chest. The air is thick with tension, and I can feel the pulse of fear vibrating through our group. River’s presence beside me is fierce and protective, a shield against the unknown, but even he can’t dispel the dread that creeps into my mind.
As another angry growl reverberates through the clearing, my breath catches in my throat. The sound is deep, primal, and it sends chills racing down my spine. I glance up at River, who stands tall and resolute, his body coiled like a spring, ready for whatever comes next. The warriors instinctively fan out, forming a protective line in front of us, muscles taut and eyes sharp.
Then it appears… a hulking monstrosity, its sinewy body, rippling with muscle, and its eyes glinting with a predatory hunger that makes my stomach churn. It’s a nightmare made flesh, snarling and bearing teeth that gleam like daggers in the dappled sunlight. I have no idea what this monster is, and to be honest I do not have much desire to find out.
“Stay back! Do not try and help, please,” River commands me, his voice steady despite the chaos brewing around us. He turns to one of the best warriors, a fierce she-wolf named Kaela, and motions for her to take position beside me. “Guard her with your life. Don’t let anything happen to her.”
I nod and so does Kaela, the gravity of his words wrapping around me like a cloak. I may be terrified, but I refuse to let that fear consume me. I watch as the shadows deepen, the trees quaking as something massive emerges from the thicket. Part of me wants to help, but I am still untrained and I would be a distraction for River.
The warriors are already changing into their wolves, and I can feel the collective breath of our group held tight, a moment suspended in time before the storm breaks loose.
“On my mark,” River growls, his stance unwavering, his gaze locked on the beast. I can see the determination etched into his features, a fierce resolve that ignites something within me. I can’t be weak. I must stand strong.
Before I can process what happens next, River shouts, “Now!” And then he lets out his magnificent wolf.
The warriors spring into action, a flurry of movement as they charge toward the beast. I can hardly keep my eyes on all of them as they leap, strike, and dodge. The clash of claws on flesh fills the air, a cacophony of growls and howls. River leads the charge, his teeth flashing like lightning as he aims for the creature's exposed flank.
I hear Kaela beside me, her voice steady and commanding as she directs the others from where she has an overview of the battle. “Form a perimeter! Don’t let it escape into the trees!”
I want to join them, to fight alongside my pack, but I can feel the weight of fear trying to anchor me in place. Instead, I focus on River, my heart racing as I watch him engage the beast. He moves with a fluid grace, dodging the monster’s massive claws, retaliating with precision strikes.
But the creature is relentless, its roars reverberating through the clearing, shaking the earth beneath our feet. It swipes at one of the warriors, sending him crashing into a tree, and my heart drops. I feel the surge of panic clawing at me, but I push it down, forcing myself to stay focused.
“Keep attacking!” Kaela shouts, her voice breaking through my haze of fear. “We can’t let it win!”
I watch as the beast retaliates, its dark form a blur as it barrels through the wolves, tossing them aside like rag dolls. My heart races as I see the terror in their eyes, the realization that this creature is unlike anything we’ve faced before. Doubt begins to creep in, a gnawing thought that maybe we can't win this fight.
Then, just as I fear the tide is turning against us, a massive shadow blots out the sun. I turn, and my breath hitches in my throat as a colossal golden Lycan bursts into the clearing, its fur shimmering like liquid sunlight. It bounds forward, muscles rippling beneath its fur, a force of nature that seems to radiate power.
The monster pauses, its growl faltering as it turns to face this new arrival. The moment feels electric, a surge of hope igniting in the air. The golden wolf charges with a ferocity that sends tremors through the ground, and in a heartbeat, the battle shifts.
The warriors rally behind the golden Lycan, their spirits lifted as they take advantage of the distraction. River moves deftly, striking with renewed vigor as the monster falters, its confidence shattered by the arrival of this magnificent creature.
With a final roar, the golden wolf lunges at the beast, teeth bared, and the monster recoils, its eyes wide with fear. It turns and bolts into the depths of the forest, crashing through the underbrush and disappearing from sight.
The clearing falls silent, the only sound is my rapid breathing as the adrenaline begins to fade. I watch, wide-eyed, as the golden wolf stands tall, a regal presence amidst the chaos. Slowly, it begins to shift, the magnificent form shrinking and morphing until it reveals a man… an older man, with the bearing of a king and eyes that hold centuries of wisdom.
“Who are you?” he demands, his voice deep and commanding, resonating through the clearing. There’s something familiar about him, a spark of recognition that ignites within me. “It is dangerous around here.”
I step forward, unable to contain the swell of emotions rising in my chest. “I am Aloria,” I say, my voice trembling yet resolute. “Your daughter.”
