Chapter 22 Free falling
River
The forest thickens around us as we move deeper into the shadows, the tension palpable in the air. My small group of fighters follows closely behind me. Each step I take is laden with urgency, the scent of wet fur and musk growing stronger, mingling with the rich earth beneath our feet.
As we close in on the were ears we shift back to our human form for a strategy meeting.
“We’re getting close,” I murmur, glancing back at my pack. Their expressions are set, a mix of determination and apprehension. “Remember, we’re here to negotiate first. I don’t want bloodshed if it can be avoided.”
Jax snorts, his impatience evident. “With werebears? You think they’ll listen to reason? They’ll just see us as intruders.”
“Maybe,” I concede, “but we have to try. If we rush in without understanding their motives, we could escalate the situation and endanger the pack.”
Lena nods, her brow furrowed. “Just be careful, River. You know how unpredictable they can be.”
As we push through the underbrush, I can hear the unmistakable sounds of the werebears… heavy footfalls, gruff voices, and the rustle of leaves as they trample through the forest. I signal for the group to halt, and I take a breath, steeling myself. This is it.
I step forward feeling the power of my Alpha wolf simmer within me, ready to be unleashed if necessary. I approach a clearing where I see them… a group of three werebears, their massive bodies hulking and intimidating, their eyes fierce as they notice my presence.
“Hey!” I call out, raising my hands to show I mean no harm. “I’m River Alpha of the Silverfang Pack. You’ve crossed into our territory without permission. I’m here to talk.”
The largest bear, his fur matted and dark, growls low in his throat then transform into a human, not that there is much difference. “Talk? We don’t talk, wolf. We take what we want.” He steps forward, towering over me, his muscles rippling under his thick coat.
“Listen,” I say, trying to keep my voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through my veins. “We don’t want conflict. We just want to understand why you’re here. What do you want?”
He bares his teeth, and before I can react, he changed back and lunges at me. My instincts kick in, and I barely dodge the swipe of his paw, the air rushing past my face as I roll to the side.
“Back! Get back!” I shout to my pack, but the werebears are already on the offensive. Jax and Dorian shift, their wolves erupting from their human forms, ready to defend their territory.
The fight ignites, chaos erupting in the clearing as fur and claws clash. I throw myself into the fray, trying to keep the werebears at bay while also protecting my pack. Lena darts around the edges, using her agility to dodge strikes and land quick blows.
But the werebears are relentless, their brute strength overpowering. One of them grabs Dorian, lifting him off the ground as he protests, and I dive in, tackling the bear to the ground.
‘Let him go!’ I roar in my head, grappling with the beast. The moment feels like an eternity, but with a swift motion, I manage to break free and shove Dorian away just as the bear swings again.
But then, in the midst of the chaos, I see a flash of movement. A young warrior from my pack, barely out of his training, is caught off guard by another werebear. His eyes widen in terror as he stumbles backward, teetering near the edge of a steep cliff that drops into an abyss below.
No! Everything in me shouts, my heart racing. Without thinking, I charge toward him, my instincts screaming that I need to protect him. I push him out of the way just as the werebear lunges at us, its claws slicing through the air.
I feel the impact as the werebear slams into me, and I stumble backward, losing my footing. The ground gives way beneath me, and I plunge into the abyss, the world spinning around me as I fall.
The wind rushes past, and for a brief moment, I’m weightless, adrenaline coursing through my veins. Panic grips me as I change into human form and reach out, trying to find something… anything… to grab onto, but there’s nothing but air.
