Jess’s POV
I was happy I pulled a bag of lolly pops out of my pack and handed them around my friends.
“I love walking out and heading for a mission. It’s like the calm before the storm, nice and relaxing”
“Really?” Christina asked while looking at me like I was crazy.
“Yeah, you get to just close off your mind and relax”
“But Jess we have just been walking for the last 4 hours. Now I am just sore and hungry. When is John going to let us sit and eat?”
“We have only been on the road for 4 hours like you said. John will not let us stop until we have been walking at least 5 hours”
“You’re kidding?”
“No, I am one hundred percent certain that John will not stop us for at least another hour”
“Not if I have anything to do with it” Christina grabbed Nicks hand and dragged him off with her towards John.
“You better tell me that Jess is wrong”
“What are you talking about?”
“She said that you are going to make us walk for at least another hour before you let us stop and eat”
“That was the plan”
“Stuff the plan. Look around these people need food and they need it now not in a bloody hour”
“But if we stop now it will mess up the schedule”
“For god sake John. So it might take us maybe an hour longer to get where we want to go. Stop been so mean and let us eat”
“Fine if I stop and let everyone eat will you please leave me alone”
“Yes”
“Argh fine” He stopped and turned to face everyone “Ok everyone we are now going to stop and eat”
His comment was followed by a large cheer from everyone in the group. Packs where thrown to the ground as everyone sat down where ever they were stood.
“If you all open the compartment at the bottom of your pack you will notice that you will have a packed lunch in there. When we set up camp later we will make a proper meal”
“Wow this is fun and all but I think I will go and hunt me a deer or something” Hayley grabbed Oscars hand and disappeared. A couple of other vamps saw them leave and followed suit.
“I have no idea what her problem is. I think this is cool. It reminds me of been back at school” Amber chucked as she unwrapped her sandwich.
“yeah only there is no tuck shop that sells hot chips and donuts that you can buy so you don’t have to eat the crap sandwiches that our mums made us” Christina pulled a face as she unwrapped her sandwich.
“Come on its not so bad. When we stop to set up camp we will go and shoot a deer or rabbit or something so that we can cook that up for tea” I leaned my back against a tree and started on my apple.
“Yuck I am not eating a poor deer”
“Come on Christina it’s not that bad. We will just be having meat and bread. Just pretend that its beef. Hey we might even see a wild pig then you can have pork and won’t have to worry about eating Bambi”
“Jess sometimes I wonder what it is that I like about you. Poor Bambi” She tried to keep a straight face but ended up bursting in to laughter. “Ok ok I admit your right. But you need to remember that I am a townie. My meat comes ready cut and chilled from the supermarket”
“Well now you’re one of us so you need to hunt and eat your kill. When we set up camp I am going to take you out hunting with me. I might even let you help gut and cut”
“Jess you are one sick lady. I will eat the meat, but there is no way that I am going to help kill it”
“You’re so boring”
“No I am a townie that’s all”
“What are you all talking about” Hayley plopped herself down while licking the left over blood of her lips.
“I am trying to convince Christina to come hunting with me when we get to camp”
“You have got to be kidding. I would not trust that witch with a gun if my life depended on it” Hayley laughed. All of a sudden her laugh was cut short and she was flying through to air and smashing in to a tree”
“You can be a real bitch sometimes. I do not need a gun when I can move you with my mind”
“You didn’t move me you cow you frigging threw me, against a tree too. You’re lucky I am a vampire. If I was human I would be broken”
“I would not have done it to a human. It was fun so see you flying through the air though”
“Yeah I bet it was. You’re lucky I can take a joke too, otherwise you would be one dead witch”
They smiled at each other as we put our rubbish back in our packs and waited for Johns command.
By the time we reached the camp area the new recruits were exhausted.
“Ok we are not going to set up a big camp here as we are only going to be eating and sleeping here for one night. It’s a calm night so we will just sleep under the stars. I do not care where you set up your sleeping bag as long as it is in this clearing. When you have chosen where to sleep I would like you to come and see me and I will give you a job to help get the rest of the camp set up” John dismissed everyone and went to find a spot to sleep.
I smiled at Kieran and led him to the edge of the clearing. There were trees for shelter and also a small stream a few feet away. “What do you think of setting up here?”
“I think this is perfect Mrs Storm. It’s like our own private little camp”
“Yeah well done Jess. I hope you do not mind if your friends come and join you” Amber did not wait for a reply. She set her sleeping bag up and sat watching as Christina, Hayley, Nick, Paul and Oscar joined us.
“I will be glad when this war is over and I can finally have some alone time with my husband” I called Romeo and led him to the river to have a drink. I filled his water bowl up while we were there and then headed back to the others.
