Jess’s POV
Everyone nodded and kept their head down. No one wanted to go home when they had come so far.
“Good now you can all eat. As soon as you have finished eating you may go grab your pack and take it back to your room to put your clothes in it. The pack has your sleeping bag and everything else that you may need. In front of the pack, you will find a pair of hiking boots. I would like you all to put these on. Thank you, you are now dismissed to eat” John came and sat beside me. Everyone else got up and started to line up for food.
“Jess, I want you to meet Grantan”
“Hi Jess, it’s very nice to meet you. I have heard a lot of wonderful things about you”
“Yeah, it must be lies then” I shook his hand and was surprised when he opened his mind to me. I saw him in the war and overhearing his commander who he looked up to. I saw him make the decision to leave. I then saw his meeting with John, by the end of the vision I trusted him. He had let me feel his emotions and he felt pure guilt for what his people had done and what they were coming back to try and do again. “Thank you for giving me that insight”
“I want you to like and trust me. Showing you how I felt seemed like the only way”
“Yeah, I can be stubborn but thank you again. I better get some food, or I will be the last one ready” I smiled at him as I walked away.
“So, you going to be nice to our ne recruit?” Kieran came up behind me and slipped his arms around my waste.
“Yes, I will be nice to him”
“That’s good. Hey, I was thinking that we should zip our sleeping bags together when we set up camp”
“I am not sure let me think about it and I will let you know after we win the war” I filled up my plate and made my way back to the table. The room was filled with excitement. I smiled to myself as I ate my food. I was one of the first to leave. The first thing I grabbed was Romeo’s silicone portable drinking bowl. I then joined the others in finding my pack. I was not impressed that John had put my pack out like everyone else’s. I liked to pack my own pack, that way I knew what I did and didn’t have. I found my pack and noticed that it was empty. I flung it over my shoulder and went to find John. He was stood in front of the packs helping people to find their packs.
“Um John my pack is empty”
“Yes, I would never dream of packing your bag for you. You know where we keep everything. Kieran’s pack is also empty. I trust you two to pack your bags. The rest of this team have never been on a mission before. They would not have a clue what should be in their packs”
“Sorry, I never thought about it that way. I will go and pack now. Thank you, boss,” I ran over to the storage room expecting to be alone but Kieran had beat me to it and he had Romeo sat at his feet.
“Hey, look Romeo your mum has finally turned up. We were starting to think that we might have to pack for you”
“As if. How come you have my dog?”
“Correction our dog. We are married now so that means we have to share everything”
“Whatever” I walked over and grabbed a sleeping bag and started to pack my bag with food and cooking appliances. I had a locker in the storage room, so I grabbed clothes out of their as I was only going to wear Jeans and shirts anyway.
“Are they the only clothes that you are taking?”
“Yeah why?”
“Well, I thought that you would at least pack some nice underwear”
“Kieran baby, I love you with all of my heart, but we are off to war not to have a romantic getaway”
“Bla bla bla. Fine but when this war is over, we are going away just the three of us. We will go somewhere that no one can reach us”
“Sounds like a good plan to me” I finished packing my bag and took his hand as he went to join the others. We were the last to arrive. Everyone was sat facing John. Kieran and I had just plonked ourselves down when John started.
“Ok we are about to head out. We will be walking the whole way as we do not want to leave tracks or evidence of where we are going. As I speak the women are going in to hiding. We have set up a few solders so make sure that they are kept safe. Does anyone have any questions?” He stood waiting but no one raised their hands.
“Ok then we will move out then. You all have enough food in your packs to last you for seven days. We will hopefully not be out there for that long but please ration your food in case we end up been longer. The walk to camp should take us around 24 hours. We will set up a small camp along the way to sleep, other than to sleep the only other times that we will be stopping is to eat. Now if you will all please stand up and put your packs on properly. They will need to be tight” He watched everyone tightening their packs around their waist. “Ok now if you will all please follow me. When we get further into the open you can spread out but for the first couple of hours you will only be able to walk four abreast” John set out and we all followed close behind. Everyone started off happy and laughing and joking. After a few hours that changed when everyone started to get hungry.
