Jess’s POV
We are in the lead and on the last part of the course. You do not want to get this far and fall of the wall and fail. So, take your time and be careful. Oscar if you will please start us off”
“Sure. I am guessing that we wait until everyone is across until we climb down?”
“No when everyone but Kieran and I have gone across you can make your way down. I am sure that Kieran and I can handle this on our own”
“Sure, thing boss” He called as he was already swinging over the river. He landed on the other side with the grace of a dancer and sent the rope back for Hayley. Hayley been Hayley had to show him off by doing a flip off the rope at the end.
“Ok I do not want anyone else to try that. Who would like to go first?”
“I will” Slick came forward and took the rope from my hand “So they are going to help me stay balanced when I land on the ledge ay?”
“Yes, they will grab you when you get close and then set you on the ledge. You will then be on your own for the wall”
“Ok wish me luck” He grabbed hold of the rope and pushed off. I held my breath and Oscar grabbed him at the other end and put him back on his feet. Slick waved at us before he walked over to the wall. Watched as he shimmied himself over the edge and then started to climb down. I let out a sigh of relief as his feet touched the ground. He did a little jig and then jogged over the finish line. I smiled as Angie wrote down his colour on her list. I had been so focused on Slick that I had not noticed that Curt and Fran had also gone across the river on the rope. Curt was now halfway down the wall and Fran was just starting to ease herself over the edge. They both made it down fine. I was shocked when Curt pulled Fran into his arms and kissed her as soon as she crossed the finish line. I turned towards the group to see that there was only Antony, Tammy, Kieran, Nick and the witches waiting to go. I looked down at the finish line and saw Madeline and Cherie just crossing it. Mark was just finishing the wall while Justin was just starting and mum and dad where about halfway down.
“Well, I better go then” Tammy took the rope and pushed off screaming the whole way across. We all burst out laughing as Hayley grabbed her and made sure, she was stable on the platform. I could see from where I stood that she was as white as a sheet. Hayley walked to the edge to where the wall started and Tammy froze. I watched as Hayley talked to her. I could not hear what they were saying with my human ears, so I called Nick over “What are they saying?”
“Tammy is scared of heights. She cannot go down the wall, so it sounds like she s going to climb on to Hayley’s back close her eyes and hold on while she is carried down the wall”
“Wow now that is what I call teamwork” I watched as Tammy slowly climbed on to Hayley’s back and hid her face in Hayley’s shoulder blades. Hayley checked that she was holding on tight and then made her way down the wall with ease. When she reached the bottom, she gently un-pried Tammy’s fingers from around her neck and walked to the finish line with her. Antony did not even speak as he grabbed the rope and swung over. He did not even need Oscar’s help. He made a perfect landing and then made his way over to the wall.
“Wow are we sure that he is who he says he is? I have never met a supermarket manager who can do that” Christina crossed her arms in a matter-of-fact gesture as she spoke
“I have no idea, but I will be having a little talk with him when this is over with”
“I think you better. Now I am going to swing. See ya” She squealed with joy as she went.
“My god she can be such a girl” Amber grunted as she took the rope and pushed off.
“Ok I am guessing that I go next as Jess will want to be the last one to go”
“Gee thanks Nick, you make me sound like such a control freak. Now go the next team is almost here”
Nick carried on laughing at me as he swung over the lake
“Ok hon it’s your turn”
“I was thinking that it would be nice if we swung over together. It would also be quicker”
“I suppose your right” I Let Kieran climb on first and then I pulled the rope back and ran towards the edge. I jumped on at the last-minute smiling as I wrapped my legs around his waist. I pulled him to safety on the other side and leaned in to kiss him. “I must say that was a lot more fun than doing it on my own”
“I am glad that you enjoyed yourself Mrs Storm. Now Ladies first” He moved aside and bowed towards the wall.
“My thank you kind Sir” I lowered myself down the wall and started to climb. I waited for Kieran at the bottom and took his hand as we walked across the finish line.
“We won” Madeline screamed. She started to dance around, and it was not long before everyone else was joining in, including me.
The next few days flew by. The teams started working together and we divided the days in to armed training and physical training. I was surprised and pleased with how far everyone had come. I was just about to head for breakfast with the rest of the group when John pulled me to one side
“Jess after breakfast we are going to have to sort the team into individual roles for this war. We are then going to have to pack up and move out. The aliens are going to be here in approximately 57 hours”
