Jess’s POV
“True you would make them work out until all they could think about was how much their muscles hurt”
“Yeah, I would. Working out is a good way to forget all your problems” I ran a bit further ahead to meet with Kieran “Hey bub how is everyone going?”
“Not too bad they are all running together as a group and helping each other if one stumbles. It’s good to watch”
“I am just glad that they are working as a group. How are the other teams doing?”
“Well, some are working together where a few people have ran off ahead and left the slower members to look after themselves”
“That’s not good”
“I am sure that you will give them a grilling when we get back”
“No, I am going to wait until breakfast. That way they have all night to think about what they did wrong”
“How did I manage to marry such a genius?”
“You got lucky. Where are Hayley and Oscar?”
“They are running along with the group. They are quicker than the others so if they see one trip they are there in a flash to pick them up so that they can carry on. Hayley is even holding hands with a couple of them to help them along”
“Wow that’s great. I think that they will make the run fine, but we will need to help them with the obstacle course”
“That’s great. Come on let’s see if we can pick the game up a couple of nocks. I made a bet with Frank”
“Oh, Jess what do you have to do if we lose?”
“I have to make the old man a cake, and we all know that is not a good idea, but if we win, he is going to make all of us a cake each”
“Sweet let’s get this party started and win this race”
I motioned for Nick to follow us, and we ran off to join our group. I was impressed how far ahead they had gotten. They had stuck together as a group, and they were coming about third at a rough guess.
“Come on guys you are doing really well, but we need to work harder. I need you to keep pace with me” I ran ahead and was proud when they pushed themselves and kept up. I noticed that the other teams were starting to lag and some of them had even resorted to walking. By the time we reached the obstacle course we were in the lead. The first obstacle was monkey bars so they had to swing themselves over “Ok if you are not strong enough to swing over raise your hands and we will boost you up and you can crawl across the top” All of the girls raised their hands to Oscar and Hayley boosted them all on to the top. “Keep your legs on the edges so that the others can go through the middle under here. Ok ladies on the top start crawling. Men start swinging” I looked behind me and saw that the next team that has stuck together was only a few hundred metres away “come on guys we need to hurry the other teams are closing in. Come on I know you can do this” As soon as they were all across, I swung over to join them. The next obstacle was the tyres “Ok guys this is easy just run through them, After this we have the wire that we have to crawl under. I want you to all go though them both as fast as you can and we will meet you all at the wall” I watched as they all ran off through the tyres and then started to crawl under the wire. I looked behind me again and noticed that the other team was having trouble with the bars. After about five minutes I saw one of them point above the bars and they started to boost each other up. I smiled glad that they were working together and using their heads. I ran through the course without even having to look where the tyres where. I had done this too many times. I Crawled under the wire and met the others at the wall. “Ok Hayley and Oscar can you please climb the wall. Nick and Kieran will boost everyone up and if you could grab them and boost them over the wall”
“Sure” Hayley replied as she took Oscars hand and leaped to the top of the wall.
“Ok guys get in to a line beside Kieran and Nick and they will boost you up one at a time” I moved to the side so that everyone had more room and turned back to watch the other teams. A lot of the teams were starting to argue now that they were tired. They had team leaders. I could not understand why they were not doing anything. I could not understand how if you where the leader of a team you could just stand back and watch them fight like school children.
“Hey Jess they are all over do you need a boost?” Nick asked
“You have got to be kidding me” I walked a few metres away from the wall and did a jumping leap. I grabbed the top of the wall and pulled myself over.
“Sorry you look like um”
“Like what Nick?”
“Well a girl”
“I am a girl Nick. I just happen to prefer to work out then go to the mall” I laughed as I landed on the other side of the wall “Close your mouth and come on” The last task was swinging over a rope to land on the ledge on the opposite side. This task needed a lot of skill as the ledge was narrow and if you fell you landed in the water below and failed. I took a deep breath and approached the team “Ok For this task I will get Oscar to go first followed by Hayley. Then we will send each of you over one at a time and Oscar and Hayley will help you as you scoot along the ledge and then you will be on your own climbing down the wall. I do not want you rushing the wall.
