Chapter 49.
Seven o’clock the next morning Rebecca awoke to find the handsome Detective Stevens lying in the bed next to her. It was a comforting feeling having the warmth of someone beside her, his arm protectively draped across her waist, hand resting on her hip. She snuggled back down into the curve of his body and closed her eyes. It wasn’t that she was trying to go back to sleep, she simply wanted to continue enjoying the sensation of him being there.
She didn’t feel any regret about what had happened, and why should she? Why should a woman regret sleeping with a man? Particularly not if she finds him attractive. This had been the first time she had ever let anyone stay the night. It was the first time she had ever let anyone into her territory. But it didn’t feel invasive. Quite the opposite, in fact it felt very good.
She thought back to the previous night, smiling at how their conversation seemed natural, like they’d known each other for longer than a mere few days. How they flirted effortlessly with each other. They talked about everything, for hours before she found the courage to make the first move. He blushed at her questioning him over not kissing her before she moved closer, leaning in for the contact of her lips on his, and he welcomed her. Within moments, she had gone from sitting beside him to straddling across his lap, his face cupped in her palms as she kissed him deeply, letting him know her intention was sincere. He responded eagerly, skirting his hand along the bottom of her jumper across the small of her back. Then sliding his hand underneath so that the full span of his palm was settled on her skin. The contact felt glorious. She smiled at the memory of him lifting her, not quite smoothly off the sofa, stumbling mid-kiss and the two of them giggling at her almost landing ass first on the coffee table. The frantic removal of clothes from each other on the way to the bedroom and what her apartment must look like now, their detritus peppering their path.
She breathed in deeply, the smell of him, of them, of sex, it permeated the air. Her smile deepened; it was one of contentment. It wasn’t long before Stevens was awake too. He kissed her gently on the shoulder and wrapped his entire body around hers. It was an incredible moment of tenderness and she wished it would never end.
“Good morning.” She said eventually turning around to face him. He brushed her hair behind her ear and kissed her.
“Morning gorgeous.” He answered still a little bleary. She snuggled into his chest and he rolled onto his back to accommodate her pulling the covers up and tucking them around her. He turned his head to see the alarm clock and sighed at the prospect of having to cut short their time lying in bed. He had to get up, there was work to go to. And he would have to leave pretty soon too. He needed a shower and a shave and his clothes definitely needed changing. But there was just enough time to have breakfast with the beautiful woman in his arms.
“This is nice.” She said in a sleepy voice. Her eyes still closed and refusing to open. She didn’t want to be wide-awake, and she certainly didn’t want to move. She wished they could stay there forever. It was one of those moments in her life that she would have freeze-framed so that she could relive it over and over.
“Mmm, it is. But I have to get up. I have work.” He purred in her ear as he tried to prise her off his chest. But the more he tried to wriggle out from underneath her the more she protested. Sharing the bed with this man held a sensation that although she was unaccustomed to, she didn’t want to lose. She didn’t care about having the cold pillow to herself if it meant sharing body heat with him. He eventually resorted to tickling her, and she gave in reluctantly letting him go. When he offered to make breakfast she couldn’t refuse and began to think that she could get used to such pampering, dragging her weary body out of bed and wrapping it in her fleecy dressing gown, she went to the kitchen with him.
As they sat together at the breakfast table, eating the pancakes and maple syrup that had lovingly been prepared by the young detective and reading the online papers, Rebecca noticed that there was no need to entertain one another. They were comfortable sitting together without having to say a word. It was nice. She looked across at him, watching how he leisurely moped the syrup with the pancake totally engrossed in what he was reading. She felt as though they had been together for years, and it didn’t frighten or disturb her as much as she would have expected it to.
She was having second thoughts about going away for a few days now. She would rather spend the time getting to know more about the man sitting opposite her. She thought that it was better not to say anything just now. It had only been the second time they had shared any intimacy and she didn’t consider two and a half nights the basis for a relationship, no matter how much she wanted it. Although the ease they felt with each other was astounding. And she imagined them doing mundane couple things together, the non-spectacular stuff, like the washing up, or shopping for groceries, and even curling up on the sofa watching television together. He looked as relaxed as she was about the situation but she didn’t know for sure if he actually felt the same.
When they had finished breakfast Stevens left for work. Standing in the hallway he gave her a long and passionate kiss goodbye and thanked her for a lovely night. She closed the door and drifted back into bed. Crawling back in under the covers and although not feel tired enough to go back to sleep merely wanting to feel his warmth again. She found the indent on the pillow where his head had been and snuggled into it, she could still smell the faint scent of him there. Her eyes feeling uncontrollably heavy closed of their own accord and she drifted off to sleep.
