Chapter 43 Chapter 42

Chapter 43 Chapter 42

Announcing the binding ceremony to the Council went exactly as poorly as I'd expected.

"Absolutely not," Thalia said immediately. "A vampire of Kael's standing binding himself to a witch and a demon? The scandal alone would undermine Court authority for decades."

"It's not a scandal if we frame it as alliance unity," I argued. "This is exactly the kind of symbol we need right now."

"It's exactly the kind of distraction Morgath would exploit," Morgana countered. "You'll be vulnerable during the ceremony. She'll attack, cause chaos, and prove the alliance is weak."

"Then we'll prove we're prepared," Azrael said. "Maximum security. Every precaution. If Morgath attacks, we'll be ready."

"You can't know that," Vera said. But I noticed she didn't sound entirely opposed. "Though I admit, a binding between three species would be unprecedented. Historically significant."

"It would also send a clear message," Cassius added thoughtfully. "That the alliance isn't just political convenience. That genuine bonds exist across species lines."

"Or it sends the message that our liaison is so compromised by personal relationships that she can't possibly be neutral," another vampire argued.

"I've never been neutral," I said. "I've always favored cooperation over conflict. Personal relationships or not, that's my position. This ceremony just makes it official."

The debate continued for hours. Some Council members supported the idea as powerful symbolism. Others called it reckless or inappropriate. Eventually, they voted.

The ceremony was approved. Barely. By a margin of two votes.

"Well," Luna said when I told her the news, "at least you won't be breaking any rules. Just bending them until they're unrecognizable."

"That's my specialty," I said.

Planning the ceremony became its own challenge. Each species had completely different traditions for formal bindings, and none of them included three participants or multiple species.

"Vampires exchange blood vows," Kael explained during a planning session. "A sacred promise sealed with each other's blood. It creates a bond of loyalty and protection."

"Demons perform soul bindings," Azrael added. "Linking essence to essence. It's intimate and permanent. Breaking it would destroy all participants."

"Witches do handfasting," Vera said. "Binding hands while declaring intentions. The magic responds to genuine commitment and creates a connection between powers."

"So we combine all three," I said. "Blood, soul, and hand. A ceremony that honors all three traditions."

"That's ambitious," Celeste said. "And magically complex. You're essentially creating a three-way bond that spans different types of magic. If it goes wrong, the backlash could kill you all."

"Then we'll make sure it doesn't go wrong," I said.

"Famous last words," Luna muttered.

We set the ceremony for two weeks out, giving everyone time to prepare and spread word through all three communities. The response was mixed. Some saw it as beautiful. Others saw it as proof the alliance was failing if we needed such dramatic gestures.

"Let them think what they want," Kael said. "We're doing this for us as much as for the alliance."

During those two weeks, life continued its chaotic pace. Alliance business, tribunal sessions, tracking Morgath's movements. She'd gone quiet since we'd exposed her fabricated incidents, but I knew she was planning something.

"She'll attack during the ceremony," I told the security team. "It's too perfect an opportunity. We need to be ready."

"We'll have every available fighter present," Azrael's guard captain said. "Demons, vampires, and witches all coordinating. If she shows herself, we'll capture her."

"Or die trying," I said.

"That too," he agreed cheerfully.

The night before the ceremony, I couldn't sleep. Too many thoughts spinning through my head. What if the binding failed? What if Morgath succeeded in sabotaging it? What if I was making a terrible mistake mixing personal commitment with political necessity?

"You're overthinking," Kael said through the bond. He'd been monitoring my anxiety from his own quarters.

"It's what I do best," I replied.

"Come here," he said. "You shouldn't be alone tonight."

I found him in the Court gardens, a rare quiet space where moonlight filtered through dark trees. He pulled me close, and I felt his steady calm through the bond.

"Second thoughts?" he asked.

"About a thousand of them," I admitted. "But none that make me want to cancel."

"Good. Because I've been waiting three centuries for someone worth binding to." He kissed me softly. "And you're worth every complication."

"Even sharing with a demon king?"

"Even that," he said. "Though I reserve the right to be occasionally jealous."

"Fair enough," I said.

We stood together until dawn, not talking, just existing in each other's presence. When the sun rose, it was time.

The ceremony was held in neutral territory, an open plaza that could accommodate the hundreds of guests from all three species. The symbolism was deliberate: neutral ground, all species welcome, a new beginning built on equal footing.

I wore a dress that incorporated elements from all three traditions. Black silk like vampire formal wear. Red accents representing demon flames. Silver threads woven by witches. Luna had helped me choose it, claiming I needed to look like the alliance personified.

"You look terrified," she said, adjusting my hair.

"Because I am terrified," I said. "What if something goes wrong?"

"Then we deal with it," Luna said firmly. "Like you always do. Now stop panicking and go bind yourself to your vampire and your demon and make supernatural history."

"No pressure," I muttered.

The plaza was packed when I arrived. Vampires in dark formal wear. Demons in traditional robes. Witches in ceremonial clothing. All watching as I walked toward the center where Kael and Azrael waited.

Kael wore Eclipse Court formal attire, all sharp lines and military precision. Azrael wore demon royal regalia, power radiating from the ancient symbols on his clothing. And they were both looking at me like I was the only person in the crowd.

Through the bond, I felt Kael's love and pride. In Azrael's eyes, I saw the same.

Vera stepped forward as officiant, chosen because she was respected by all three species. "We gather today to witness something unprecedented. A binding that crosses species boundaries. A commitment that represents the best of what the alliance can be."

She began the ritual, guiding us through each tradition. The handfasting came first, our hands bound together with cord woven from materials representing all three species.

"Speak your intentions," Vera instructed.

"I choose you both," I said, my voice carrying across the plaza. "Despite every reason saying I shouldn't. Despite the complications and the challenges. I choose love over fear. Cooperation over isolation. A future together over a past apart."

"I choose you," Kael said. "For as long as my immortal life continues. Through every challenge. I choose us."

"I choose you," Azrael added. "And I choose to be worthy of that choice. To build a realm that honors what we represent. I choose hope."

The handfasting cord glowed with magical response, recognizing genuine intention. Next came the blood vow. We each offered a small cut, mixing our blood in a ceremonial cup while speaking oaths of protection and loyalty.

Finally, the soul binding. The most dangerous part. Azrael guided us through it, demon magic intertwining our essences in ways that made my very being resonate with theirs.

It was intimate beyond anything I'd experienced. I could feel them, not just emotionally or magically, but fundamentally. Our souls touching, recognizing each other, choosing to bind together despite every law saying we shouldn't exist.

The magic sealed with a flash of light visible to everyone present. The crowd erupted in cheers and applause, though I noticed some vampires and demons looked skeptical.

"It's done," Vera announced. "The first tri-species binding in recorded history. May it be the first of many."

Kael kissed me, and the crowd cheered louder. Azrael kissed me next, and I felt the demon contingent respond with enthusiasm. When Kael and Azrael clasped hands, completing the triangle between us, even the skeptics had to acknowledge the power of what we'd just created.

That's when I felt it. A familiar magical signature. Shadow magic. Wrong and corrupted.

"She's here," I said.

Morgath stepped out of the crowd, having been there the entire time wearing an illusion. She clapped slowly, mockingly.

"Beautiful ceremony," she said. "Truly touching. Too bad it proves exactly what I've been saying. You've bound yourself to monsters, Seraphine. Made yourself one of them. You're no longer a witch protecting humanity. You're a traitor to your species."

"I'm expanding my family," I corrected. "Not betraying my species."

"We'll see how humanity feels about that when the alliance inevitably collapses," Morgath said. Then she vanished before security could react.

"She's going to use this against you," Vera said quietly.

"Let her try," I said, holding tight to both Kael and Azrael. "We just created something she can't break. That's what matters."

But as the celebration continued around us, I couldn't shake the feeling that Morgath was right about one thing.

Everything was about to change.
