Chapter 69 Sixty nine
Chapter 69 Sixty nine
Leyla's POV
The servant's words fell like stones into still water. Each one sent ripples of horror through the room.
"I saw them in the music room," the girl whispered, her voice shaking but audible in the deathly silence. "The Lady Mia was playing. The Lady Leyla came in. They sat close together on the bench. Lady Leyla... she unpinned Mia's hair. All of it fell down her back."
The crowd gasped. I heard someone whisper, "The hair is sacred. Only a husband may undo it."
I stood frozen. Mia beside me went pale as bone.
"And then," the servant continued, her voice breaking, "she kissed her. On the mouth. For a long time. And then they went to the divan. I could not see everything but I heard... I heard sounds."
The room erupted. Voices rose in shock and disgust. Nobles turned to each other, their eyes wide with scandal. The Vizier's smile was a slash of triumph across his face.
Khalid closed his eyes. I saw his jaw tighten, saw the muscle jump in his cheek. He had known. Of course he had known. But hearing it spoken aloud, in this place, in front of everyone... it was different.
The servant kept speaking, her words crude and precise, painting a picture of intimacy that left nothing to imagination. She had watched through a crack in the door. She had seen everything. Or enough. Or what she thought she saw.
"Enough." The Sultan's voice cut through the noise. He looked at the girl, his face unreadable. "You are certain of what you witnessed?"
The servant nodded, tears streaming. "I swear it, my Sultan. On my mother's grave. I saw what I saw."
The Vizier iterated with his voice dripping with false sorrow. "There is your fact, Learned Samira. The deviancy that poisons this house. Not suspicion. Not gossip. A witness. A confession from the girl's own lips."
Samira stood rigid, her scroll forgotten in her hands. Her face paled but her eyes were blazing. I knew that look. She was searching for a way out, a legal loophole, a technicality that could save us.
There was none.
The room turned to us. All eyes. Hundreds of them. Nobles who had come for entertainment now had blood in the water. I could feel their hunger, their anticipation. This was better than any play. A real scandal. Real ruin.
Mia made a small sound beside me. A whimper she could not hold back. I reached for her hand without thinking, squeezed it once. Then let go.
This was it. The moment we had feared since the beginning. The secret that could destroy us all.
The Vizier spread his hands. "My Sultan, the law is clear. Such acts between women are an abomination. They corrupt the natural order. They bring shame upon the house and all connected to it." He turned to give Khalid a pitiful look. "The Lord Khalid has been deceived. His trust betrayed. His honor stained."
Khalid opened his eyes. He looked at the Vizier, then at me. There was no anger in his gaze. Only a question. What now?
I did not have an answer.
The sultan's voice boomed as he said:
"The accused will step forward."
I felt the weight of the moment. All my plans, all my strategies, all my careful performances had led to this. There was nowhere left to hide. No clever words left to speak. Just the truth.
I let my gaze fall on each of my wives each fierce and brilliant. Yasmin, gentle and strong. Imani, sharp and loyal. Mariam, steady and commanding. Mia, fragile and brave. Nadia, burning with love and fury.
They looked back at me. In their eyes, I saw fear, yes. But I also saw something else. Trust. They trusted me to find a way.
I did not know if I could.
I stepped forward. The room held its breath.
The Sultan waited.
And in that terrible silence, I began to speak.
I did not look at the Sultan. I did not look at the Vizier but at the women who held my heart.
Sira bristled with fierce intelligence. Yasmin's gentle courage. Imani's sharp loyalty. Mariam's quiet strength. Mia's trembling bravery. Nadia's burning love.
They were my constellation. My council. My heart.
"He is right," I said.
The words fell into the silence like stones. A gasp rippled through the crowd. The Vizier's eyes widened, then narrowed with satisfaction.
"What he describes... is not a lie."
Pandemonium. Nobles shouted. Priests cried out. The Vizier spoke louder, his voice rising above the chaos.
"She confesses! The deviancy is proven! Seize them!"
The Sultan raised his hand to shut everyone up.
I confidently turned to face the Vizier. My voice was calm, clear, carrying to every corner of the vast room.
"His interpretation is a lie. He calls it deviancy. He calls it poison." I looked at the crowd, at the shocked faces, at the hungry eyes. "I call it love."
Another ripple of sound. Shock. Disbelief. A few, a very few, looked thoughtful.
I turned to the Sultan. My sass, my confidence, the fire that had never quite been tamed, blazed forth.
"And it is the strongest weapon this kingdom has."
The Vizier spluttered. "You admit your guilt! This is madness!"
"I admit my power." I faced him, my eyes blazing. "And I am not alone."
The words hung in the air as an invitation, a challenge and a declaration.
Behind me, I heard movement. Footsteps. One set. Then another. Then more.
I did not turn. I did not need to. I felt them gathering behind me, a wall of love and loyalty that no Vizier could breach.
Nadia was first. Of course she was. Her hand rested on her sword hilt, her voice ringing out clear and fierce.
"My love is not a secret. It is my banner. I would die for it. I would kill for it. And I stand with Leyla."
Samira stepped forward, her chin lifted, her scholar's composure cracked but not broken.
"A mind that knows law also knows truth. The law says love is not a crime unless it harms. We have harmed no one. We have saved many. My heart is my truth. I stand with Leyla."
Yasmin moved to join them, her gentle voice steady.
"I have spent my life nurturing life. Growing things. Healing. The love I feel is as natural as the sun on a flower. I will not be ashamed of it. I stand with Leyla."
Mia walked forward, her steps small but sure. Her voice trembled but grew stronger with each word.
"I was invisible before she saw me. Before any of you saw me. She gave me music again. She gave me courage. If that is wrong, I do not want to be right. I stand with Leyla."
Imani slipped through the crowd, her sharp eyes fixed on the Vizier.
"I have spent years watching. Listening. Collecting secrets. The only secret worth keeping is the one that makes us strong. This love makes us strong. I stand with Leyla."
Mariam walked last. Her regal grace filled the space, her grey eyes cold and clear.
"I have managed this household through famine and war, through conspiracy and attack. I have seen what destroys houses. It is not love. It is fear. Greed. Betrayal. This love is the only thing that held us together when everything else tried to tear us apart. I stand with Leyla."
Seven women. Seven voices. One truth.
The room was silent. The Vizier's face had gone from triumph to fury to something like fear.
The Sultan stood. His face was unreadable.
"You would all confess to this... aberration?"
Mariam answered for all of us. Her voice was calm, final, absolute.
"We confess to loyalty. To a bond he cannot purchase, cannot intimidate, and will never understand."
She pointed at the Vizier. And in that moment, something shifted. The power in the room flowed away from him, toward us.
The Vizier screamed. "This is treason! This is madness! You must burn this poison out!"
The Sultan raised his hand. Silence fell.
He looked at us. At the seven women standing together. At the wall of love and courage we had built.
"I will consider what I have witnessed," he said quietly. "The court is adjourned until dawn "
