Spring Dance

Spring Dance
Alex's POV

"I love you too!" Ethan's words cut through the blue haze filling my mind like a knife through fog.
Reed's power over my body wavered for just a second. It was like someone had thrown a bucket of cold water on me. My real thoughts came rushing back, and I could suddenly see clearly again.
The confession hit me harder than any punch. Ethan loved me. He actually loved me back.
But before I could even understand what that meant, Reed slammed back into control of my mind. The blue lines on my skin flared brighter, and I felt myself being pushed down into a dark corner of my own head.
"How touching," Reed said through my mouth, his voice cold and mocking. "But love won't save either of you now."
I tried to scream, to move, to do anything, but my body wouldn't follow me anymore. I was stuck inside my own head while Reed used my face to smile cruelly at Ethan.
Then something strange happened. Deep in my mind, I felt a warm spark. It was small, but it was growing. Every time I thought about Ethan's words - "I love you too" - the spark got stronger.
Reed spotted it too. "What is this?" he hissed, and for the first time, he sounded worried.
The spark turned into a light, and suddenly I could see flashes of memories. Not the scary ones Reed had been using to control me, but good ones. Happy ones.
Ethan laughing at one of my stupid jokes. Ethan staying up all night to help me with homework. Ethan looking at me like I was the most important person in the world.
And then, like a movie playing in fast-forward, I saw something impossible. I was back in our college room, but it looked different. Cleaner. There were party preparations everywhere, and music was playing.
"What's happening?" I whispered, but nobody could hear me. I was watching like a ghost.
Ethan walked into the room wearing a nice shirt and tie. He looked nervous, fussing with his sleeves.
"You ready for the dance?" he asked someone behind me.
I turned around and saw myself - but not the present me with blue lines all over my face. This was a normal me, wearing a suit and grinning like an idiot.
"Ready as I'll ever be," the other me said. "I can't believe we're actually going together."
"Me neither," Ethan smiled. "I'm just glad you finally asked me."
Wait. This wasn't a dream. This was something that never happened. But it felt so real I could almost touch it.
"This is what you want, isn't it?" a familiar voice said behind me.
I spun around and saw Professor Chen, but she looked different. Her eyes weren't sparkling blue, and she seemed... peaceful.
"Professor? How are you here? Reed turned you into a robot."
Chen shook her head. "I'm not really here, Alex. This is happening inside your head. The nanobots are trying to process Ethan's confession, but it's causing a feedback loop. They can't understand love, so they're showing you alternative worlds."
"Alternative realities?"
"Possibilities. Futures that could have been if things were different. If you hadn't been tested on. If Reed didn't exist. If you and Ethan had just been normal college students."
I looked back at the scene in our shared room. The other me was fixing Ethan's tie, and they were both laughing about something.
"It's not real," I said sadly.
"No," Chen agreed. "But your feelings are real. And that's what's confusing the nanobots. Reed expected you to fight with anger or fear. He didn't expect love."
The scene changed again. Now I was watching Ethan and myself at what looked like a school dance. We were slow dancing, and other me was saying something that made Ethan blush.
"I want this," I admitted. "I want this so badly it hurts."
"Then fight for it," Chen said. "Reed is strong, but love is stronger. You just have to believe it."
Suddenly, the peaceful scene shattered like glass. I was back in Reed's power, trapped in my own body while he used it to terrorize Ethan.
But now I had something Reed didn't understand. Hope.
I gathered every happy memory I had of Ethan. Every smile, every laugh, every moment when he made me feel like I mattered. I held them all in my mind like a shield.
Reed felt it instantly. "Stop that," he ordered, but his voice was weaker now.
I thought about Ethan's notebook that he was still holding. He'd gone back to our room to get it, which meant he'd seen all my pictures. He knew how I felt about him, and he still said he loved me.
The blue lines on my skin started flashing like a broken light bulb.
"I said stop!" Reed shouted, but I could feel his control slipping.
I thought about the spring dance that was going to happen next week. In the fake world, Ethan and I had gone together. Maybe, if we got out of this alive, we could still make that happen for real.
My right hand started to move on its own. Not because Reed was controlling it, but because I was fighting back.
"Ethan," I managed to say with my own voice. "The dance..."
Ethan's eyes widened. He understood that the real me was still in here somewhere.
"Alex? Can you hear me?"
"Always," I said, pushing harder against Reed's power. "I can always hear you."
Reed roared with anger inside my head, and the blue lines flared so bright they lit up the whole room. Emily and Chen, still under his control, started walking toward Ethan.
But I kept fighting. I thought about slow dancing with Ethan. I thought about making him laugh. I thought about a future where we didn't have to hide how we felt about each other.
And slowly, inch by inch, I started to take back control of my own body.
"This isn't over," Reed growled. "Even if you break free now, I'll find another way. I'll hurt everyone you care about until you give up."
But I wasn't listening to his threats anymore. I was looking at Ethan, who was still holding my notebook, still believing in me even when I couldn't believe in myself.
"The dance," I said again, louder this time. "Will you... will you go with me?"
Ethan smiled, and it was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen. "Yes," he said simply.
That's when the real news hit me. As Reed's control finally broke totally, I realized something terrible.
The spring dance was tonight. Right now. And according to the clock on Chen's wall, we'd been trapped in this mind fight for hours.
Which meant that somewhere across campus, the dance was happening without us. And if Reed's robot army was still out there, they were probably using the crowded event as the best place to capture more students.
"Ethan," I said urgently as I got full control of my body again. "We have to get to the dance. Now."
"Why?"
I looked at Emily and Chen, who were still standing frozen with sparkling blue eyes. Reed might have lost control of me, but he still had them. And if he was as smart as I thought he was, he wouldn't waste a chance like a school dance.
"Because," I said, grabbing Ethan's hand, "Reed's not done with us yet. And everyone we care about is walking right into his trap."
