Chapter 549: The Room We Forgot
Chapter 549: The Room We Forgot
Chapter 549: The Room We Forgot
Nora stood at the end of the corridor, smiling like she had been waiting twenty-three years for Ethan to turn around.
Caleb moved in front of Ethan.
“Stay back.”
Nora tilted her head.
“You always said that.”
Caleb froze.
Ethan noticed.
“You remember her?”
“No.”
Nora laughed softly.
“You remember the feeling. That is enough.”
The emergency lights flickered above them, turning the corridor red, then black, then red again.
Ethan kept his eyes on Nora.
“You said we locked ourselves in with you. What does that mean?”
“It means you finally stopped remembering the story they gave you.”
“Who gave it to us?”
“Mara.”
Caleb shook his head.
“She wouldn't.”
“She did.”
Nora took one step forward.
Caleb immediately stepped back.
“Don't come closer.”
Nora stopped.
“You were always afraid of me, Caleb.”
“I don't know you.”
“You used to.”
Ethan felt the silver thread tighten around his fingers.
A pulse traveled through it.
The corridor disappeared.
He was standing somewhere else.
A white laboratory surrounded him.
He heard a child crying.
“Ethan?”
He turned.
Caleb stood beside him, but he looked younger. Maybe ten years old.
Ethan looked down at himself.
His hands were small.
“No,” he whispered.
Caleb stared at him.
“This isn't real.”
“It is a memory.”
Nora's voice came from behind them.
They turned.
She stood inside the white room.
She looked twelve again.
Mara stood beside a machine, tears running down her face.
“Nora, listen to me.”
The younger Nora shook her head.
“I don't want to forget.”
“You won't.”
“You promised that last time.”
Mara looked toward the technicians.
“Begin extraction.”
Ethan's stomach twisted.
Caleb grabbed his arm.
“What are they doing?”
“I don't know.”
A machine began humming.
Silver light spread across the walls.
Nora screamed.
Mara rushed toward her.
“Stop!”
The technicians ignored her.
Nora's body lifted from the chair.
Threads of light began pulling from her head.
Her memories.
Ethan understood.
“They're taking everything.”
Caleb stared at Mara.
“She said she was saving her.”
“She thought she was.”
The room shook.
A technician shouted.
“Memory saturation is critical!”
Another screamed.
“There's nowhere left to store it!”
The machine suddenly turned toward Ethan and Caleb.
Their younger bodies were pulled forward.
Caleb screamed.
Ethan grabbed his hand.
The silver threads entered them.
Nora's memories flooded their minds.
Her first birthday.
Her mother's hands.
A red bicycle.
A bedroom window.
A song.
A nightmare.
A hospital.
A funeral.
Everything.
Ethan fell to his knees.
Caleb collapsed beside him.
Then Nora appeared between them.
Not twelve.
Not their age.
Something in between.
Her eyes were silver.
“You took my memories,” she whispered.
Ethan tried to speak.
“We didn't.”
“You did.”
“We were children.”
“So was I.”
The memory shattered.
Ethan returned to the corridor gasping.
Caleb was beside him, gripping his head.
“Nora.”
“She showed us the first experiment,” Ethan said.
Caleb looked toward the empty corridor.
“No. She showed us what she wanted us to see.”
Ethan frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“Look.”
Caleb pointed to the wall.
A silver symbol had appeared.
Three circles connected by a line.
The same symbol from the photograph.
“The memory changed,” Caleb said.
Ethan stared.
The laboratory scene had left an imprint.
Three circles.
Three children.
One system.
“Nora wasn't the experiment,” Ethan whispered.
Caleb nodded.
“She was the source.”
A voice came from behind them.
“Closer.”
They turned.
Nora stood there again.
Her appearance shifted between twelve years old and their current age.
“You're beginning to understand.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“Why did you make us forget?”
“I didn't.”
“Then who did?”
Nora looked past him.
At the darkness behind the broken machine.
“Mara.”
Caleb's expression hardened.
“She erased our memories?”
“She separated them.”
“Why?”
“Because the truth would have destroyed you.”
Ethan shook his head.
“What truth?”
Nora's smile disappeared.
“You weren't children chosen for the Framework.”
She raised her hand.
“You were born because of it.”
Caleb went still.
“What?”
“The system needed minds capable of carrying memories without breaking.”
Ethan felt sick.
“You're saying we were created?”
“No.”
Nora stepped closer.
“You were altered.”
The floor trembled.
Ethan looked down.
Silver lines were spreading beneath his shoes.
Caleb grabbed him.
“Move.”
They ran.
The corridor twisted.
Doors appeared where there had been walls.
One opened.
Inside was the white laboratory.
Another opened.
Inside was the hospital.
A third revealed the room from Ethan's recovered memory.
The door.
The pounding.
The voice begging to be released.
Ethan stopped.
“That one.”
Caleb followed his gaze.
Nora stood inside.
“You remember now.”
Ethan approached the doorway.
The memory returned.
He and Caleb were inside.
Nora was inside too.
Mara stood outside the glass.
The Framework screamed through the speakers.
“Containment failure.”
Nora was crying.
“Let me out.”
Ethan remembered grabbing the door.
Caleb remembered helping him.
They had locked it.
But now Ethan saw something he hadn't seen before.
Mara wasn't trying to open the door.
She was smiling.
Ethan's blood ran cold.
“She wanted us to lock it.”
Caleb stared through the doorway.
“Why?”
Nora answered.
“Because I was becoming something she couldn't control.”
“What were you becoming?”
Nora looked at Ethan.
“The Framework.”
Silence.
Ethan's mind struggled to understand.
“You became the system?”
“No.”
She touched the silver lines beneath her feet.
“The system became me.”
Caleb shook his head.
“Then why are you free now?”
“Because you broke the connection.”
Ethan looked at the ruined machine.
“So if you're free, what happens to the Framework?”
Nora smiled sadly.
“It dies.”
Caleb exhaled.
“That sounds good.”
“It would be.”
Nora looked directly at Ethan.
“If I die with it.”
Ethan stared at her.
“You're asking us to kill you?”
“No.”
She stepped backward into the laboratory.
“I'm asking you to remember why you couldn't.”
The door slammed shut.
Caleb grabbed the handle.
“Ethan!”
The silver symbol flashed.
A final memory struck them.
They were standing in the laboratory twenty-three years ago.
Nora was between them.
Mara was outside.
And the Framework was counting down.
Five.
Four.
Three.
Ethan remembered Nora taking his hands.
Caleb remembered her taking his other hand.
She had been crying.
“Don't let her erase me.”
Two.
One.
The system activated.
Ethan looked at Caleb.
“We promised her.”
Caleb's eyes filled with tears.
“What did we promise?”
Ethan remembered.
“We promised we'd come back.”
The corridor went completely dark.
Then Nora whispered from somewhere behind them.
“You finally did.”
Caleb turned.
She stood inches away.
Her face was no longer frightening.
She looked twelve again.
Just a scared child.
She held out her hand.
“Now help me finish what we started.”
Ethan reached for her.
Caleb stopped him.
“Wait.”
Ethan looked at him.
Caleb pointed toward the darkness.
Something else was standing behind Nora.
A woman.
Mara.
But she wasn't watching Nora.
She was watching Ethan.
And for the first time, Ethan understood the terrible truth.
Mara had never been afraid of Nora.
She had been afraid of what Ethan and Caleb would remember about themselves.
The woman smiled.
“That's enough.”
The corridor doors slammed shut.
And somewhere deep beneath the building, the Framework woke again.
Neither brother knew what would happen next.
