First Blood
Pain shot through Caleb's head without notice. He dropped to his knees, clutching his temples as foreign voices screamed in his mind.
Help us! They came out of nowhere!
Blood... so much blood...
We need help!
Tobias was at his side in seconds. "Caleb? What's wrong?"
Caleb couldn't speak. The shouts were too loud, too desperate. Through the chaos, he saw flashes of trees, caught glimpses of shadows moving with unnatural speed, felt the terror of wolves under attack.
"The northern border patrol," he gasped. "They're being attacked. Victor's forces—"
He didn't get to finish. Lucian burst through the door, phone in hand, his face grim.
"Northern patrol was ambushed. Three injured, one missing."
Tobias helped Caleb to his feet. "How did you know?"
"I heard them," Caleb whispered, still shaken. "In my head. I felt their fear."
The brothers shared a look that Caleb couldn't quite read.
"We need to move," Lucian said. "Victor's made his first move."
The safe house became a war room in minutes. Pack leaders gathered around maps, planning defensive positions while scouts reported enemy moves. Caleb stood back, still reeling from the mental attack.
"You felt the attack before it was reported," Isabel said, appearing beside him. "Your powers are growing."
Caleb frowned. "I don't understand. I'm not bonded to those wolves."
"But you are bonded to Crimson Fang through Tobias," she explained. "And as a Bondspeaker, your reach is extending. It's what I've been trying to tell you—your abilities go far beyond what you've imagined."
Before Caleb could answer, Reid rushed in with two bloodied warriors.
"They hit the eastern checkpoint too," he stated. "They're moving faster than we expected."
Lucian's face hardened. "They're trying to cut us off from the cave."
"We need to split up," Aurora said, moving forward. "One group heads directly to the Cave of Whispers with the sealing mixture. The others create a diversion."
"Too dangerous," Reid claimed. "We need to stay together."
Aurora shook her head. "If we all travel together, we're one big target. Victor will throw everything he has at us."
"She's right," Tobias said. "We need to be unpredictable."
Caleb felt a strange flutter in his chest—like his twin bond with Aurora was trying to tell him something. The sensation had been getting stronger since their shared vision.
"I'll take the mixture to the cave," he offered. Everyone turned to look at him.
"No," Tobias said instantly. "Too risky."
"Victor won't expect it," Caleb replied. "He thinks Aurora and I will be together. And as a Bondspeaker, I can stay connected to all of you even at a distance."
"He's right," Ethan said, startling everyone. "My son's scentless nature gives him an advantage. Victor's forces won't be able to track him."
Lucian considered this, his golden eyes locked on Caleb. "You won't go alone. Tobias will go with you."
"And me," Isabel added. "I need to be there to perform the ritual."
"The rest of us will draw Victor's attention," Lucian continued. "We'll make him think we're all heading to the eastern entrance of the caves."
As they finished the plan, Caleb found himself alone with Aurora.
"Be careful," she said, squeezing his hand. "Something feels wrong about all this."
"The vision?"
She nodded. "What if we're walking into a trap? What if that voice—"
"We can't think about that now," Caleb said, though the same questions had been haunting him. "We have to close the seal before Victor can use it."
Aurora's eyes were worried. "Just... be ready. For anything."
The forest was strangely quiet as Caleb, Tobias, and Isabel made their way toward the Cave of Whispers. No birds sang, no small animals moved through the underbrush. Even the wind seemed to hold its breath.
"We're being watched," Tobias whispered, his eyes searching the trees.
Caleb had felt it too—a prickling feeling between his shoulder blades. But his newly awakened senses told him something else.
"Not by wolves," he whispered. "Something else."
Isabel clutched the bag holding the ritual ingredients closer to her chest. "The shadow creatures. They're drawn to the seal."
Tobias growled low in his throat. "How much farther?"
"Just over this ridge," Isabel said. "The cave entrance is hidden behind a waterfall."
They topped the hill, and Caleb felt the twin bond suddenly flare to life.
Ambush! Aurora's voice screamed in his mind. Victor knew about the plan!
Before Caleb could warn the others, the ground beneath them burst. Not from a physical blast, but from shadows that burst like geysers, solid enough to throw them off their feet.
Tobias shifted quickly, his massive wolf form lunging at the nearest shadow. His teeth passed through it like smoke, but the shadow struck back with claws that left bleeding gashes on Tobias's side.
"Run!" Isabel shouted to Caleb, shoving the bag into his hands. "Get to the cave! We'll hold them off!"
Caleb paused, watching as more shadows materialized from the trees. These weren't just Victor's wolves—they were something worse, something that moved with unnatural speed and strength.
"Go!" Tobias's voice pushed into his mind through their mate bond. "I'll be right behind you!"
Heart beating, Caleb ran. The ground dropped down toward a small ravine where water cascaded over moss-covered rocks. He could hear the snarls and cries of fight behind him, feel Tobias's pain through their bond.
I need to help him, his heart screamed.
You need to seal the portal, his mind countered.
The twin tie tugged at him again. Through Aurora's eyes, he saw chaos—Victor's forces had struck their group too. They were fighting for their lives while shadows moved among them, strengthening Victor's pack.
"This was never about stopping us," Caleb realized aloud. "He wanted to split us up."
The cave opening loomed before him, dark and forbidding behind the curtain of water. As Caleb neared, the air grew heavy, charged with power that made his skin prickle.
Don't go in alone, Aurora begged through their bond. Wait for Tobias.
But Caleb could feel Tobias's struggle increasing. The longer he waited, the more danger everyone was in.
Taking a deep breath, he stepped through the waterfall.
The cave beyond was not what he expected. Instead of darkness, soft blue light pulsed from crystals set in the walls. The air hummed with energy that made his wolf stir restlessly.
"Welcome, Bondspeaker."
Caleb spun around. Standing behind him was Victor, his eyes gleaming with victory.
"How—" Caleb began.
"Shadow-walking," Victor said with a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "One of the many gifts my new allies have given me."
Caleb backed away, holding the bag of ritual ingredients.
"Your plan was clever," Victor continued, stepping forward. "Dividing your forces, using your scentless nature to slip past us. But you forgot one thing." His smile broadened. "I've been in your twin's mind. I know how you think."
"Stay back," Caleb warned, feeling power growing inside him. The same power that had allowed him to hear the patrol's cries for help.
Victor laughed. "Or what? You'll use your untrained abilities against me? I've been merging with shadow magic for months. You can't match me."
As if to make his point, darkness swirled around Victor's hands, solidifying into claws.
Caleb felt for his bonds—to Tobias, to Aurora, even to his father. They were all fighting, all in danger. And here he was, alone with the one person who wanted to destroy everything.
"You don't understand what you're doing," Caleb said, buying time as he inched toward the tunnel that went deeper into the cave. "The seal isn't meant to be broken."
"I don't want to break it," Victor answered. "I want to control it. With your help."
"I'll never help you."
"You won't have a choice." Victor's eyes flashed with something inhuman. "Once the blood moon rises, I'll have enough power to force you and your sister to open the gateway. The shadow realm will merge with ours, and I'll command both."
Caleb felt a chill run down his spine. This was worse than they had imagined. Victor wasn't just trying to use shadow magic—he was trying to bring two worlds together.
In that moment, Caleb made a choice. He turned and sprinted down the tube, toward the seal. He could feel Victor close behind, shadows lashing at his heels.
The tunnel opened into a vast room. At its middle stood a massive doorway made of black stone—exactly like the one from his vision. Ancient symbols cut into its surface glowed with purple light.
"The First Seal," Caleb whispered.
As he approached, the symbols flared brighter. The door wasn't solid—through it, Caleb could see swirling darkness and faraway purple flames.
Hurry! he heard Aurora's voice in his mind. Something's happening to the shades!
Caleb fumbled with the bag, pulling out the bowl of prepared mixture. If he could just apply it to the symbols before Victor reached him—
A shadow crashed into him from behind, sending the bowl flying. The mixture splashed across the stone floor, most of it missing the seal completely.
"No!" Caleb cried, watching as the valuable liquid seeped into the ground.
Victor appeared from the shadows, his form flickering between man and something... other. His smile was triumphant.
"Too late, Bondspeaker."
The ground began to shake. From the symbols that had been touched by the mixture, cracks spread across the black stone door.
"What have you done?" Victor snarled, his triumphant smile vanishing. This clearly wasn't what he had expected.
Caleb didn't have an answer. The tremors increased. Through the cracks in the door, something moved—something vast and old.
Welcome home, children, the familiar voice from their vision whispered in Caleb's thoughts.
The door broke.
And as darkness flooded the chamber, Caleb realized with horror that they hadn't stopped the gateway from opening.
They had just broken the only thing keeping it closed.
