Chapter 28: The irreparable rift
Initially, Masha had thought that Myra was just a pretty face with no brains. That's why she ignored her academic life. Also, the fact that no one ever talked about how she usually performed made Masha assume that the elders were ashamed because of her poor performance. Hence, they didn't dare to talk about it. However, what was she seeing? She knew quite well how people to participate in such a research competition were chosen. It was all about performance. No matter what power a person held or how wealthy they were, no backdoors were allowed. That only meant one thing: Myra's performance wasn't to be underestimated. Masha bit her lower lip. She was unwilling. She had felt triumphant because she thought she could beat Myra in academics, but what was that? It seemed like they were on a par with each other. Was there any day she would ever energe victorious? No matter what she did, she could never surpass Myra. Why were the heavens so unfair? The more she thought about it, the more twisted her expression became. No, she couldn't allow Myra to surpass her in this competition. She had to win no matter what. As she thought about it, she picked up her laptop and walked to the table in her bedroom and concentrated on working. She was very confident that she could win the competition when the time came. Only then would she stop feeling inferior.

Myra had no idea she had already become someone's biggest enemy. Even if she knew, she wouldn't care. People had always hated her while others regarded her as an enemy. Her beautiful face was enough to elicit hatred from people. Moreover, Myra was well aware of the fact that she could never get along with Masha in this lifetime. She had tried making things work between the two of them to know avail. She never understood why Masha always wanted to compete with her. She didn't hate her, though. She was her blood relative so she could only embrace Masha's hatred towards her. She never even once complained. That's why no one knew the undercurrent that lay between the two of them. At that moment, she was sleeping soundly. She had been tired for quite a while, and she would always be plagued with insomnia, especially ever since her parents disappeared. She could only sleep, thanks to the meds she was on after her arm broke. Otherwise, no one knew if she'd ever manage to sleep. She'd spent the whole day and night doing research, just to numb herself from the fact that she would never see her parents ever again. It was sad, so that's how she always escaped.

The following morning, Reese woke up, expecting a call from Myra. He had called her but found out that she was asleep. He was looking forward to seeing her call back when she woke up. To his disappointment, though, she didn't call. Reese couldn't help but sigh. He wondered if he was that ugly? Otherwise, why couldn't he get her to like him? He knew he was the most good-looking man around, but Myra's indifference made him doubt himself. But that was what made her unique. Even with how hot and powerful he was, Myra didn't give a damn about him. The more he thought about it, the more intrigued he felt. He wasn't discouraged. Rather, he wanted to win her heart even more. After waiting for a while longer and not seeing the expected call coming in, he grew impatient. He rubbed his temples in frustration. What exactly was he doing? He was the dark lycan, who could get anything he wanted as long as he set his eyes on it. However, he couldn't do that to her. He wanted her genuinely. He didn't want to scare her, or worse, make her hate him. After a moment of contemplation, he dialed her number.

Myra was woken up by her phone vibrating. She didn't even look to know who it was and just picked it up.
"Hello." Myra spoke groggily. Anyone could tell that she had just woken up. This made Reese feel a bit guilty. It turned out that she didn't call because she was asleep.
"I'm sorry, did I wake you up?" Reese didn't notice how gentle and soft his voice had become.
"I was supposed to be awake by now, so I should be thanking you instead." Myra said as a matter of fact. She could already see the sun shining outside, and she knew she had definitely overslept.
"Oh, I called you yesterday, but you didn't pick up. I figured out that you must've been asleep by then." Reese explained. For a moment, he actually thought she was ignoring him, but when he heard her groggy voice, his heart was once again filled with hope.
"You did?" Myra was startled. She checked her phone, and sure enough, she saw several missed calls.
"I'm sorry. I was asleep." Myra apologized. She wouldn't ignore his call. It wasn't on purpose.
"I know. Don't fret." Reese said, and the two talked about different topics. There was a smile on Myra's face that she didn't even notice. It was genuine and sweet. Not the fake one she would flash from time to time.
Just as they were deep in, Reese's voice suddenly turned serious.
"Myra, i have something to tell you when you come back. Will you allow me?" As he asked this, his palms were clammy.
"No." Myra didn't even bat an eye. She had been aware that the way Reese treated her was different, but she wasn't ready for anything more. To her, men were all the same. She didn't want to trust any man ever again.
When Reese heard her cold response, his heart sank. This was what he dreaded the most. After composing himself, he asked sadly;
"May I ask why?"
