Chapter 190: Appear in Time

Chapter 190: Appear in Time

Aviah's POV

I wanted to refuse, but I couldn't figure out how to say it.

Was Dwayne's death because of me?

I wasn't sure, but the fact was, he was dead and I was still alive.

Refusing would be the best way to handle this, but I really couldn't bring myself to refuse. I just couldn't imagine that Dwayne was dead.

In the end, I agreed to their request and called Lila, arranging to meet her and Dennis.

We decided to meet at a nearby bar. When Lila and Dennis arrived, Valentin stood up to greet them. "You must be Dennis, right? Dwayne often talked about you."

Dennis was excited. "Why didn't Dwayne come?"

The room fell silent for a moment. Then Trevor spoke up, "Dwayne is dead."

Hearing this terrible news, Dennis lost his balance and fell to the ground. "What did you say?"

Valentin and Trevor pulled him onto the couch and handed him a drink.

After a moment, Dennis mumbled, "How did Dwayne die?"

I looked at Valentin and Trevor, especially at the way Trevor was looking at me. I felt uneasy, and a bad feeling washed over me.

Sure enough, Trevor looked at me and said slowly, "She got him killed."

He pointed at me. The next second, Dennis rushed at me like a madman, but Valentin and Trevor blocked him. I wanted to explain.

But then I suddenly understood. Their visit to Lakeview to meet Dennis was fake—the real reason was to use him to get revenge on me.

Although I wasn't the one who killed Dwayne, his death was indeed related to me.

I felt helpless and could only let out a bitter laugh. Carl had approached me to save Valentin, and Dwayne had done the same.

In the end, he died, and now they were coming after me for revenge.

How ironic.

Trevor deliberately didn't explain what really happened because he wanted me to say it myself.

If I did, would Dennis, who was still furious, believe me?

Would my words be more believable, or Valentin's?

And how could I explain?

If I explained, I would drag Griffin into this too.

Griffin was already so busy. He hadn't even had time to bother me lately. Every day I could see Sebastian, Felix, and Hazel going in and out of his office, busy with something.

If I told the truth, looking at Dennis's state, there was no guarantee he wouldn't do something extreme, and then Griffin would face even more pressure.

The key issue was that it was hard to say who was right or wrong in this situation.

The whole thing started because the Fisher family wanted to trade my life to save Valentin's.

In the end, Griffin rescued me, and judging by their attitude, Dwayne's death might be connected to Griffin.

He hadn't told me, probably to protect me.

And even if I told Dennis the truth, would he understand me? No, he wouldn't.

With that thought, I forced myself to keep quiet.

My silence seemed like a silent admission, agreeing with what Trevor had said.

Dennis collapsed on the floor, covering his face with his hands, his shoulders shaking constantly.

Lila crouched beside him, softly comforting him, occasionally looking up at me with a complicated expression.

Trevor stood to the side, a faint smile playing at the corner of his mouth.

Valentin kept his head down, his fingers unconsciously tapping on the table, making soft sounds.

I stood there, feeling everyone's eyes on me like needles.

"Why?" Dennis suddenly looked up, his eyes red. "Aviah, tell me, why you? Wasn't Dwayne good to you? Why did you get him killed?"

His voice was hoarse, filled with desperate questioning.

I opened my mouth, not knowing how to explain. The truth felt like a huge stone pressing on my chest, making it hard to breathe.

"I just wanted to live, and that day, I almost died too."

I thought Dennis would understand if I said that, but I didn't expect him to angrily shout at me, "Why didn't you die?"

I looked at him. Although I knew he was angry, I still didn't expect him to say that.

I decided to just turn around and leave.

Behind me, Lila was supporting the unsteady Dennis. She said coldly to me, "From today on, we're no longer friends."

I didn't say anything, just nodded in response.

I opened the door and walked out. Behind me, I heard a whooshing sound. "I'll kill you."

I instinctively turned around. Dennis was holding a bottle, and his figure was getting bigger and bigger in my vision.

I almost unconsciously closed my eyes and raised my hands to block the bottle.

A loud crash rang out.

Alcohol splashed all over me, but the pain I'd imagined didn't come.

I tremblingly opened my eyes and saw Mason standing in front of me, smiling at me. There was a piece of broken glass from the bottle stuck in the back of his head.

I froze. Mason smiled and said, "What a coincidence. I came out to do some food delivery, trying to make some extra money, and I ran into you again."

As he spoke, he collapsed toward me.

I quickly caught him, but he was too heavy, and I ended up pinned under him.

At least I cushioned his fall, so he didn't get hurt again.

I was also glad he fell forward. If he'd fallen backward, the glass would have been driven into his brain by the momentum, and he might have died on the spot.

"Quick! Call an ambulance!"
