The Unexpected Visitor
Two weeks after the birth of Danny Dawson, Chris found himself alone at the office at the end of the workday. The sun had gone down, his agents had gone home, and Daniel had called him to let him know he would be taking one more week of paternity leave and then proceeded to ask if Chris would handle a VIP showing for him the next day, which Chris accepted.
Persephone who had been helping out at the time of the call offered to pick up the keys from Gloria, Daniel's assistant, and was on her way to Daniel's office before the two hung up. Chris opened the file on the VIP showing to familiarize himself with selling points and special features, which included a walk-in refrigerator.
As he looked over the file, he imagined Daniel at home enjoying time and bonding with the newborn. Chris remembered holding the infant on the day of his birth, and subsequently in days that followed after the family was discharged and they went home. He and Persephone stopped by with meals for the family of they would deliver anything the newly formed trio needed.
His mom had called him a few times to express the joy little Danny brought to the family and would drop not-so-subtle hints about wanting a grandchild of her own. This, he kept from Persephone.
He sighed.
Danny was nothing like Christopher Paul had been.
The baby was now two-weeks old, and he slept more than anything each time he had seen him. Even as he held him, the baby hardly even moved.
One look at his cousin, and Chris could see Daniel was definitely in heaven having his own mini-me.
He heard the front door open and heels clacking against the floor.
Chris loosened his tie and began closing the computer programs down and cleaning up to head out with Persephone.
"You're back quickly," he called out. "I'll be done soon."
He heard the jingling of keys being dropped on his desk. He smiled as he looked up expecting to see his girl's beautiful face but instead came across another beautiful face.
"Michelle," he uttered as he did a doubletake when he saw her. He quickly stood. "What are you doing here?"
Michelle laughed as she pointed to the keys on his desk. "I overheard Gloria's conversation with Daniel and decided to bring you the keys myself since your office is in the way home."
She removed her jacket. She wore a red dress with a deep V-neck that exposed her cleavage. "I think it's funny that we essentially work together yet we don't get to spend any time with each other despite our history." She sat at the corner of his desk, crossing her long legs.
Chris ran his hands through his hair feeling cornered. "Technically, we don't work together. You're with Daniel's team."
"Oh, you know what I mean," she waved his words away. "By the way, do you know if your mom is avoiding my calls? I wanted to invite her to brunch, but I can't seem to get a call in." She shrugged her shoulders. "We always got along."
Chris sighed. "Yeah, about that," he said as he stared at her, "I'm not comfortable with you trying to maintain a relationship with my mom given our history."
Michelle stared at Chris for a moment before laughing out loud. "I thought you were serious for a moment there." She crossed her arms over her chest, the act causing her swells to be more pronounced. "By the way, isn't Daniel's kid adorable?"
Chris flinched at the change of subject.
"If we had a kid, he'd be just as cute, don't you think?" She asked softly.
Chris put his hands in his pockets and remained silent.
She looked at him pensively. "I've been meaning to ask you about that, but I've been a little shy."
Chris frowned, convinced she wasn't asking what he thought she was asking. "Ask me about what?"
Michelle stood upright, turning her body toward him. She looked into his eyes and smiled that bright smile of hers. "I would love to have a baby with you, Chris."
