Chapter 52: Perfect Storm
Chapter 52: Perfect Storm
Calla’s POV
I had no chance to fully grasp the woman’s golden eyes before the ground violently shook beneath us. Raiden rose unsteadily behind me with his eyes emitting a fierce warning message. The air grew heavy with unleashed energy while the Source surged with increased strength as though reacting to unfamiliar presence. Instinctively I moved toward Raiden with my heart pounding against my ribs as I prepared for battle.
Raiden and I resumed our familiar routine without speaking. It was like breathing—fluid, natural, unspoken. My transformation into my wolf form prompted Raiden to do the same and then the world between us suddenly seemed to become our entire universe. Our movement was unified while our senses merged into one and our attacks operated perfectly together. As I lunged Raiden always protected my vulnerable spots. Every time he struck, I followed through. The golden-eyed woman didn’t flinch. Her eyes watched us with an ageless calm while she stood ready to watch yet another war unfold.
I knew this was no ordinary opponent. Her presence created a bizarre stabilizing impact on the Source. I sensed her power move as Raiden and I maneuvered around her which created a magical pull that felt like a tidal wave. She extended her arms and the chamber’s runes erupted into brilliant illumination. The chamber walls emitted a humming sound as ancient energy vibrated through the air. I needed to fight harder and faster since this battle involved more than just claws and teeth. The fight stood as a struggle for control of the Source along with the destiny of all it safeguarded.
My response matched the growl that rumbled from Raiden's throat. Our attack transformed to a single motion with me jumping and him striking while we both pushed against her with all our strength. But she never faltered. She moved among us with the fluid grace of shadow and flame as she danced through our attacks. Her golden eyes met mine and I recognized her immediately from somewhere deep within my memory. It sent a shiver down my spine. Who was she? I felt this overwhelming sensation that I previously knew her.
The fight turned brutal fast. Our powers clashed with hers causing rocks to shatter and sparks to fly all around. A powerful wind pushed Raiden away but I managed to grab him before he reached the ground. His eyes met mine, fierce but steady. “Calla, we have to end this. Together.”
I nodded, muscles trembling but ready. We locked eyes and understood without words and then rushed together into battle. The golden-eyed woman had almost no time to respond. The golden-eyed woman was caught off guard when Raiden tackled her from the left and I charged in aggressively from the right. The wolves of both sides engaged each other in violent skirmishes with interlocked teeth and fighting claws. Raiden’s power surged through me like a powerful river which powered all my movements. Together, we were unstoppable.
But the woman wasn’t done yet. A sharp cry from her triggered a golden light wall that slammed into us and forced us to tumble apart. The impact against the cold stone was so strong that I tasted blood in my mouth. Despite my wolf's painful howl I remained steadfast in my determination not to surrender. I gritted my teeth and lifted myself back to my feet while Raiden rose alongside me.
He growled, wiping blood from his cheek. “She’s not just strong. She’s something else. Calla, this isn’t just a fight. It’s a test.”
I brushed away sweat from my forehead and worked to regain my breath. “A test? What kind of test?”
Raiden’s eyes narrowed. “One I don’t want to fail.”
The golden-eyed woman lifted her hands once more after we shared another quick look. She opted to communicate in a soft yet authoritative tone instead of striking. “You have proven your strength, Calla, Raiden. The sacred cannot be preserved through strength alone.” Her gaze shifted toward the radiant Source. Your understanding of the balance will enable you to protect it.
A weird feeling of peace took hold of me even though the atmosphere remained tense. Raiden experienced a minor sense of relief while maintaining his intense gaze. “What do you want from us?”
The woman’s gaze softened. The words "I am your mother" hit me like a lightning bolt. The details about my origins and the Whisper together with the Source became clear to me at once. I serve as the protector of the Source and maintain equilibrium between light and shadow. You were born to guard the Source which rests beneath your feet because you are a vital element of this balance Calla. Raiden you serve as the strength which maintains that balance.
My breath caught. The idea of her being my mother defied possibility yet her presence confirmed it through the vibrant connection between us.
She nodded slowly. My purpose here is to ready you for your upcoming journey. His threat possesses a magnitude beyond your current understanding. His darkness expands because he consumes power as well as fear and doubt. In order to face the coming challenges you will need to stand as one with unprecedented strength.
Raiden moved toward her while speaking with a cautious yet stable tone. “What’s the next step? How do we stop him?”
Her eyes began to shine a radiant glow that filled the chamber with comforting light. The Source functions as the central point of magic for this location. For the Source's protection you need to repair his fractures and call the ancient spirits who guard this place. But it will require sacrifice.”
I swallowed the lump in my throat. “What kind of sacrifice?”
Her gaze met mine while she offered a sorrowful smile. “Your bond will be tested. Protecting the Source requires the willingness to sacrifice something that you value above all else.
Raiden’s hand found mine instantly, grounding me. “Whatever it is, we face it together.”
The woman’s gaze flickered between us. “Good. Because soon, the Shadow King will return. This time you’ll face an army even more terrifying than any you have encountered before. He will relentlessly destroy everything you love until only shadow remains.
The chamber violently shook with an intensified and menacing power. The Source’s light brightened briefly before fading abruptly to warn us of future events. The air grew thick with tension. A firm squeeze of Raiden’s hand showed me his comforting warmth along with his steadfast strength.
The situation demands swift action," I stated with a strong voice. “We have to prepare. Our fighting must be flawless together like we just achieved it.”
Raiden nodded. “We will train harder. We will become stronger. We will make sure the Shadow King loses the battle as long as we have control over the outcome.
The woman moved away from us as she approached the staircase while her form started to lose definition. I will lead you forward when the moment becomes appropriate. But for now, gather your pack. Seek out and align with every possible ally.
She disappeared before I could ask another question leaving me standing beside Raiden and the glowing Source.
I looked at Raiden, my heart pounding. “This changes everything.”
He gave me a rare and genuine smile which caused an ache in my chest. “Then let’s not waste a second.”
Emerging from the chamber we felt the future’s weight bearing down on us. The pack stood above ground with eyes open wide from both hope and fear. Their faces showed that they were prepared to follow us into the storm.
My gaze returned to the ruins one last time and a shiver ran up my spine. A pair of red eyes followed our path from the shadowy area beyond the clearing without blinking.
The Shadow King had not given up. He was waiting.
This time his pursuit involved everyone with us.
