Chapter 46 Secrets Beneath the Surface
Chapter 46 Secrets Beneath the Surface
Zoe stared at the book, her fingers hovering over its worn cover, tracing the cracks in the leather and the faint symbols etched into its spine. It felt… alive. Not in a way she could explain, but there was something ancient about it—something that pulsed beneath the surface, waiting to be uncovered. The Book of Life, her heart raced, every answer she had been searching for… could be inside.
Her past, the Moon Goddess, her erased memories and him, whoever he was. Zoe swallowed hard. Her hand moved slowly, lifting the cover, then she froze as a familiar presence brushed against her senses. Zack was coming back, Zoe’s eyes widened slightly “No…” she whispered under her breath, not yet; she wasn’t ready to explain or share any of this, not yet, not when she didn’t even understand it herself.
If Zack saw this, he would worry, he would question, he would try to protect her and right now… Zoe didn’t want protection; she wanted answers. She snapped the book shut quickly, her movements suddenly urgent. The letter—she folded it just as fast, sliding it back into the box. Her mind raced. Think, Zoe. Think. There wasn’t time to overthink.
She grabbed both the book and the letter and moved swiftly toward the closet. Her hands were steady, but her pulse thundered in her ears. She pushed aside her clothes, digging deep into her suitcase—into the section where she kept her personal things she needed hidden, away from prying eyes for now. She slid the book beneath a layer of folded clothes, tucking the letter inside its pages before closing it again.
She covered it, carefully and thoroughly, as if it had never been there and then stepped back, exhaling slowly, just for now, I need time, then glanced at the door. I’ll figure this out myself first. Because whatever it was, it was bigger than her and Zack, and until she understood it, she wouldn't drag him into it.
Zoe quickly moved back toward the bed, picking up her things, pretending to organise the last of her belongings, just in time. The door opened, Zack stepped inside, and immediately—His presence filled the room, warm and grounding. Zoe turned toward him, forcing a soft smile. “You ready?” he asked, his voice gentle as he walked closer. Before she could answer, He leaned in, brushing a soft kiss against her lips.
Zoe melted into it instinctively; it was simple, sweet and comforting—a stark contrast to everything that had happened recently. “Yeah,” she said softly, pulling back slightly. “Just packing the last of my things.” Zack nodded, his eyes lingering on her. There was something different in his gaze now, not possession, not urgency, just… affection and something deeper, respect.
“I still can’t believe this is real,” he murmured. Zoe tilted her head slightly. “What is?” “This,” he said, gesturing between them. “Us.” Zoe’s chest tightened—just a little, not from doubt, but from the weight of everything they had been through to get here. “It’s been a long road,” she admitted. Zack let out a quiet breath. “Yeah… and I almost ruined it.”
Zoe’s expression softened. “Almost.” Zack stepped closer, his hand brushing gently against her waist. “I meant what I said,” he murmured. “I’m not going to mess this up again.” Zoe searched his face and, for once, she believed him. “I know,” she said quietly. There was a pause, then Zack smiled faintly. “Come on,” he said. “We should head out soon if we want to make it before sunset.”
Zoe nodded. “Our little honeymoon getaway,” Zack smirked slightly. “‘Little’?” Zoe laughed softly. “Okay… not so little.” A secluded escape just the two of them, no responsibilities, no pack, no past, just…peace and a new beginning, and then Zoe felt something warm settle in her chest. We need this. After everything, they deserved this, a chance to … be, without interruptions, without pain and without the world crashing in on them.
Zack picked up her suitcase effortlessly, glancing back at her. “Are you sure you got everything?” Zoe hesitated—just for a split second. Her gaze flickered toward the closet, toward the hidden book, the letter, the truth she wasn’t ready to share, then she forced a small smile. “Yeah.” Zack nodded. “Good.” He stepped closer again, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “You, okay?” Zoe met his eyes.
There was genuine concern there, love and care, and for a moment she almost told him, almost. Like she said before, not yet, not until she understood what she was dealing with. “I’m good,” she said softly. Zack studied her for a second longer, then nodded. “Alright.” He leaned in again, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead this time. “Let’s go.”
As they stepped out of the room together, Zoe couldn’t shake the feeling that something had shifted. That beneath the surface of their new beginning… Something darker was waiting, watching and planning. Her hand instinctively brushed against Zack’s. He laced his fingers with hers without hesitation. Zoe squeezed his hand slightly—just one week.
One week of peace. She needed that, they needed that, because once she opened that book, everything would change and deep down… Zoe knew. Nothing would ever be the same again.
