Chapter 68 I wish I had a dad like you
Harry's POV
"Alright, boys, it's late, time for bed," I interrupted, moving to grab Chris, who seemed exhausted from explaining.
"Yes, Harry," the chorus, even though with a crackle. Chris was the first to run to the bedroom, but Colton was still in the living room with me.
His fingers prickled his nose as he thinned his lips.
"When will we get to see her? Just once, Harry, just so we don't get to think she abandoned us," he grumbles, barely pronouncing the words properly.
I ruffled his hair and smiled warmly to encourage him.
"Trust me, it's definitely going to be soon, don't you like surprises?" I asked, staring into his eyes and waiting for a response from him.
He sniffs and parts his mouth to produce a statement, but then my phone beeps in my pants pocket.
I shifted my gaze to my back, as that seemed like a distraction.
"I don't know, I'd give you a reply by dawn," he said, and before I could turn my gaze to look at him again, he had slipped away to the bedroom.
Somehow, I can tell they are annoyed with me, and so rather than responding to the call, I just strolled to their door and leaned on it to scan them.
They were on the bed, their eyes were up, awake as though drowning in thoughts that devoured them.
"Goodnight boys" I yelled just so they could hear it, but Chris retorted with the words:
"No goodnight kiss?"
I grinned, knowing they'd certainly want me to come inside.
Rushing to meet them and just a step to be near, my phone beeps again.
The boys lowered their gaze to look at me as though giving me a choice to choose between them and the phone.
I folded my lips, narrowed my gaze at them, and began to move backward.
They looked disappointed. Chris had an upside-down smile, and Colton was glaring.
But I burst into a chuckle and saluted them. I just pissed them off to see that fighting energy in them.
If I leave, they'd definitely come fight me. They smiled at me as I ran to jump in between them.
Colton crawled onto me while Chris punched me as we all played and laughed hard.
It took a while before we settled on the bed with both kids by my side, and our gaze was focused on the roof now like we needed an answer.
"You're the best, Harry," Chris muttered in a mumble, cuddling himself around my right arm.
Colton, who was leaning to my left arm with his leg crossed over my thighs, said:
"I wish to have a dad like you."
I became emotional by that line. Turning to look at him, I realized his eyes were closed now and he was drowsy.
"I'd always be what you want me to be, forever and ever," I said warmly, kissing him on the crown of his head.
Settling with them on the bed, I fell asleep.
If the continuous buzzing of my phone hadn't woken me up, I would still have been asleep.
Jerking up gently from the bed, I made sure not to wake the kids and crawled out of the bed.
Still feeling drowsy, I scrambled for my phone with my hands to get it, which I had abandoned on the table adjacent to the bed.
Even my vision was still blurry, and letting out a yawn, I stared at the screen.
It's dawn already, judging from the time, and unlocking the phone, I saw several missed calls from a particular number.
I took a glimpse at the boys who were cooed in the bed inside the thick duvet.
Letting out a smile, I moved to the kitchen, intending to respond to the call while preparing breakfast.
My legs stood by the counter as I took some eggs from the crate inside the cabinet above my head.
Placing them on the counter, I returned my attention to the phone as it might be an important call.
Before I could call back, the contact repeated the call, and as I answered it, the first sound I heard was a sigh.
The voice seemed familiar, and I furrowed my brows at the counter before me, trying to recall whose voice it was.
"Who's this?"
"It's Sam! There's no need for an explanation..."
As he speaks, I lazily move to get a frying pan, as his words don't interest me.
Sam is more like a snitch who feeds me information about my family, whom I've disowned.
All I thought was that he'd inform my father, possibly sending an army to come take me away.
"Alpha Damien is on the search for you," he announced, but I didn't really take a grasp of that line until he said:
"He's going to kill you."
I switched on the stove and placed the pan while moving to the fridge to get some veggies which I'd chop.
"Harry! Are you there?" he asked, but I yawned, still nonchalant about his words.
"What exactly are you saying, Sam?" I subconsciously asked, even though I heard his words loud and clear, but I hadn't processed anything to my knowledge.
I took a pack of yogurt, placed it under my armpit, and used the same free hand to search for veggies.
"Alpha Damien! He's coming for you!" he grunted, and suddenly the pack of yogurt dropped.
"What?" I panicked as switching the phone to my other ear, like the ear it was earlier, seemed to make me deaf.
He heaves again, certainly bemused by my response.
"Why?" I asked, knowing I have no business owning him or even having any relationship with him.
We haven't even met before and out of the blue, he's hunting me? Is it for the kids?
Has Rosie exposed them to him, and he thinks I'm keeping them away?
A lot of questions linger in my mind as my eyes shook in their sockets.
"I don't really know either, but it relates to that massacre."
"What?"
"Remember Harry, that bloody night and that juvenile that swore to find you?"
