Chapter 10: A Great Relief
My mind went completely blank. I quickly started giving him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. After a few cycles, I placed my hands on top of each other and began chest compressions.
At that moment, everyone around me was blaming me. Some even threw words like "murderer" at me.
I tried my best to ignore the voices around me and focus all my attention on Dennis.
Just as the third round of thirty-second chest compressions ended, Dennis suddenly regained some consciousness. My heart leaped with joy, and I quickly said, "Dennis, breathe slowly. You have to breathe slowly."
Beads of sweat also appeared on Tyler's forehead. He didn't stop me from doing anything, just crouched beside me watching Dennis's condition.
Noisy discussions erupted around us.
"What's happening? Did he actually save him?"
"You better stop messing around! If something happens to him, he's really dead!"
"Is this a last burst of energy before death? Don't they say people have that before they die?"
I could no longer stand these people's sarcastic remarks. Without thinking too much, I shouted angrily, "Everyone shut up! The patient needs quiet right now! I'll take full responsibility for everything! You don't need to judge me!"
The air instantly froze. The pressure around us dropped. Everyone looked at each other, and no one made another sound.
Dennis was breathing slowly, gasping for air. I gently rubbed his chest to help him breathe easier.
Just then, Ivy, with sweat on her forehead, half-stumbling and half-pushing through the crowded people, practically burst through the crowd.
"There's... there's nitroglycerin in his bag."
I quickly grabbed the medicine, took out a tablet, and placed it under his tongue.
Everyone nervously watched Dennis's condition. After a few minutes, his consciousness gradually returned, and his breathing calmed down.
Ivy couldn't help but cry, "Dennis, you jerk, you scared me to death!"
Everyone gasped and started applauding.
Seeing that Dennis was out of danger, my heart, which had been hanging in mid-air, finally settled down, and my tense nerves relaxed.
Tyler held my hand, giving me comfort.
The ambulance arrived at that moment. The paramedics rushed through the crowd. Dennis had already stood up with Ivy's support.
"Thank you, Sophia. I... I have coronary heart disease, it's hereditary. I've been seeing a doctor regularly, and the doctor said it wouldn't be life-threatening. I must have been too tired from preparing for the wedding recently, and I didn't take my medicine or eat on time, so I had an episode." Dennis thanked me weakly.
My expression relaxed, feeling somewhat relieved. "I'm glad you're okay. You must take your medicine on time and take care of yourself. That was really dangerous just now. You should go to the hospital for a checkup."
Dennis shook his head. "I'm fine. This has happened before. Going to the hospital is just for rest. Today is my wedding. I don't want to leave Ivy with regrets."
Ivy beside him made a choking sound in her throat. "Forget the wedding, let's go to the hospital first."
Tyler also said, "Dennis, going to the hospital is most important. Don't neglect your health. Do you want something to happen again?"
No matter how much we tried to persuade him, Dennis refused to go to the hospital. So he asked the paramedics to check him on the spot to determine if he could continue with the wedding.
After checking his blood pressure and doing an EKG, the paramedic said curiously, "All vital signs are normal. But not many people know such professional first aid measures, especially the sublingual nitroglycerin."
Everyone looked at me. I didn't think it was anything special, so I explained, "I took forensic medicine as an elective in college and learned some related knowledge. Actually, many people know this too, but most people rarely encounter such situations and have forgotten."
Dennis and Ivy kept expressing their gratitude to me.
I nodded slightly. "It's nothing. Since the wedding can proceed normally, Dennis, you should go to the lounge to rest. Let's postpone the wedding for a bit."
"Right, Dennis, you must rest for a while, or I won't marry you!" Ivy patted him, both angry and worried.
"Okay, okay, I'll go rest. I'll have the pastry chef bring out more desserts later. I'm really sorry, everyone. Please eat something first. I'll be back after resting for half an hour." Dennis apologized to the crowd.
After such an incident, everyone naturally understood and told Dennis to rest first.
After Dennis and Ivy left, everyone's eyes turned to me again.
This time, what greeted me was no longer doubt, but admiration.
"Mrs. Sophia Thompson is really amazing, truly the woman behind Mr. Tyler Thompson."
"Thank goodness for Mrs. Thompson today, or something terrible would have happened."
"Mrs. Sophia Thompson and Mr. Tyler Thompson are such a perfect match."
I had no energy to deal with these flattering remarks. At that moment, I just wanted to find a quiet corner to rest.
Tyler saw what I was thinking, so he took my hand and said to everyone, "Sophia needs to rest now. Please excuse us."
With that, he led me toward a booth in a corner.
It finally became quiet around us. I rubbed my aching head. The tension in my heart hadn't completely disappeared yet. After all, I had just dealt with someone's life.
"Have some water." Tyler handed me a glass of water and sat down beside me.
I took it and drank. Only then did I feel a bit better.
"Don't rush into these situations in the future. Even though Dennis is our friend, no one can bear the responsibility if something goes wrong," he suddenly said.
"I know what you mean, but in a critical moment, I didn't think that much. Fortunately, Dennis is okay."
Tyler looked at me, his eyes dark and unclear. "What if something had happened to Dennis today? Have you thought about that?"
I nodded and took a deep breath. "I have. I'd probably carry a bad reputation for the rest of my life, and you'd be dragged into it too."
Tyler's lips curved into a smile, neither confirming nor denying. "If that really happened, I would definitely protect you at all costs."
Hearing this, my heart jolted. A hint of something unclear passed through my eyes. I didn't answer this question, just closed my eyes to rest.
Gradually, the earlier incident passed. Everyone was chatting enthusiastically, completely unaffected.
After graduating from college, classmates went their separate ways. Everyone was able to gather at this wedding. Before long, old classmates had gathered around us to catch up.
In college, Tyler was already in the spotlight because of his status as the heir to the Thompson family. After graduation, he took over the Thompson Group and developed it into a thriving enterprise in less than three years. Now he's built a business empire that belongs only to the Thompson family.
I politely and humbly caught up with my classmates. Perhaps immersed in memories of our youth, my mood began to improve, and I gradually relaxed.
While chatting happily with classmates, there was a commotion at the door. I noticed many people looking at me, their eyes expressing feelings that made me uneasy.
I followed their gaze. When I saw who appeared at the door, my heart tightened sharply, and my emotions instantly became complicated.
