Chapter 500 500
Chapter 500 500
Mrs. Walsh's eyes grew misty as she listened. Her voice trembled, thick with emotion. “Lena, your grandfather built this house with his own hands. He's been gone for so long, but I just can't bring myself to leave this place."
Elena didn't say a word.
Mrs. Walsh knew exactly why Elena was quiet. She tried to reassure her. “Don't worry. My legs are getting better, slowly but surely. I can take care of myself, really. You don't need to worry about me."
Still, Elena didn't answer.
Anyone else's silence would have meant agreement, but not Elena. Mrs. Walsh understood her better than anyone. When Elena went quiet, it meant she didn't agree.
Trying to lighten the mood, Mrs. Walsh smiled and looked at Elena with warmth in her eyes. "By the way, Lena, that driver you brought with you last time... he's a good one. I like him."
Elena gently took her grandmother's thin, bony hand in hers. "If you like him, I'll bring him over next time too."
Mrs. Walsh nodded right away. "That would be nice. When my legs are back to normal, I'll cook something for you both. Although... all I know is simple home cooking. I don't know if it'll suit his taste."
Elena let out a soft laugh. "If I like it, he'll like it too."
Then Elena's voice turned serious. "If you don't want to go to the capital, then let his people stay here and keep watch. Otherwise, I won't be able to relax." She looked up at her grandmother.
Back when Elena had to be away for any length of time, she always made sure someone was secretly watching over her grandmother. Damon had thought of that too. Elena felt grateful. And honestly, she was moved.
Ever since Elena came back, Mrs. Walsh had known she'd found out what Jenson and Rebecca had done.
"Alright. But honestly, those two are too busy dealing with their own messes. They don't have the time or energy to bother with me now."
Elena's voice turned icy. "They might be in trouble, but they're still after the shares you hold."
Jenson and Rebecca had already crossed the line by laying a hand on her grandmother. Elena had no intention of showing mercy.
Mrs. Walsh let out a heavy sigh. "The company's already in ruins because of them. Lena, you should find a way to take over. As for Jenson and Rebecca, just do whatever you think is best."
She sounded completely disheartened. She had lost all hope for Jenson and Rebecca. Elena nodded. "I will."
Mrs. Walsh hesitated, then said, "I can't do anything about Kayla, but Luke... I watched him grow up. He's a troublemaker sure, but deep down he's a good kid. He just got spoiled by them."
Elena nodded again. "I know what you mean."
Luke was just a kid whose parents had let him get away with too much. Maybe this close call would get him back on track. If he changed, Elena would help for her grandmother's sake if not, then his fate was his own problem. She wouldn't care anymore.
Mrs. Walsh gently stroked Elena's long, silky black hair. "Lena, you've been through so much."
Elena rested her head in her grandmother's lap, the corner of her mouth lifting in a small smile. "It's nothing."
Whenever she was exhausted, a nap in her grandmother's arms made everything better.
"Grandma?"
A voice called in from the yard.
Elena immediately opened her eyes and sat up straight, her expression turning tense.
Mrs. Walsh froze for a second. The voice called out again, and this time she recognized it. She looked at Elena in surprise. "Lena, is that Jay? Isn't he supposed to be studying abroad? He's back already?"
Elena nodded. "I think so."
A moment later, Mrs. Walsh saw Iceblade come in, his arms full of bags and gifts. "Grandma." To Mrs. Walsh, Iceblade was still just a college kid, innocent and bright. “Jay, it's been ages. You're back from overseas?"
He nodded politely. "Yeah, Grandma. Elena happened to be in France too. We ran into each other at a car race and figured we'd come home together for a visit."
