The Game is On

Hazel woke to the sound of Rhett growling. She sat up quickly to find him shifting into his wolf. She had never seen it before, he was beautiful.

A big chocolate brown wolf with glowing gold eyes. He moved between the door and Hazel and let out a thunderous growl that shook the bed beneath her.

She connected with Rhett’s mind. There were intruders outside closing in on the house. Ryan and a number of other men. At least seven he scented.

Hazel shivered in fear at the thought of someone harming the babies that slumbered in her womb.

Rhett told Hazel to call James, she climbed to the other side of the bed and scrolled down to his number and pressed call.

“Yeah, what up boss?” a sleepy James asked.

“There are men outside the house, Rhett shifted. He said to come now, please hurry.”

“We’re on our way, find yourself somewhere to hide Hazel. Hold on, we’re coming.”

The phone went silent. Hazel knew it would be a while until any help showed. Her mind went to one place. The only person she knew that had vowed to help her no matter what. The one her grandfather entrusted with her life. Haldir the immortal. The indestructible. The one who cannot die. She closed her eyes and called out to him.

Suddenly, Rhett snarled and leaped from the bed and down the stairs as Hazel heard the door being kicked in and glass breaking. She heard the garbled screams of men and the wolf snarling and ripping at them. Then she heard a shot.

A heavy dragging sound came from the staircase and Hazel heard whimpers as a blood soaked wolf drug itself through the doorway. Rhett.

“OH NO Rhett NO!” Hazel cried as she threw herself down on him and pulled him up close to her body.

He was losing blood quickly and he reached out to her. ‘Sweetheart, get out. Do whatever you have to do just get out. Burn the whole fucking place to the ground if you have to. Go!’

“No, no, I’m not leaving you Rhett.”

Just then, a rush of air passed by her and she heard the sound of clothes flapping on a clothesline. She looked towards the noise and saw Haldir and Teddy appear. Seeing the injured wolf, Teddy ran to it and began to say a spell over his wound. Haldir saw blood on Hazel's gown and went to check her over.

“Are you hurt ,Hazel? Look at me," he said and yanked Hazel’s chin towards him. “Are you hurt?” he asked.

She shook her head no, then looked down at the blood on her gown and hands. Then the air become heated quickly causing beads of sweat to form on their brows. Hazel began to breathe heavily, quickly.

Haldir looked at Hazel and said, “Hazel? What are you doing?”

Her hair started blowing and a blue flame erupted around her.

“Oh fuck!” Haldir said as he realized what she was doing. He had seen it happen before, but not to Hazel. He was there when Daniel the Darke leveled the whole settlement all those many, many years ago. When he killed hundreds of people all in a matter of minutes.

Hazel’s eyes became black as night and she lifted off the ground. Her feet dragged along underneath her as she began to move out of the bedroom.

Teddy looked up from the wolf who was beginning to return to his human form. “Follow her Haldir!” Teddy shouted.

An injured and naked Rhett emerged as Haldir slowly approached the possessed witch. He followed close behind but at a respectful distance. He did not want to provoke whatever ancient evil inhabited her now.

Rhett shivered uncontrollably as the spell began to take hold and his blood slowly seeped back into his wound. “H-Hazel, st-st-op h-her,” he begged Teddy. “I’m sorry Rhett, no one in this whole world can stop her now,” Teddy said as he applied a potion to the mans chest.

The front door flew open in front of Hazel as she moved towards it. Haldir continued behind her and as he passed the threshold, he noticed an axe propped up against the side of the house. He picked it up and smiled as he said, “ Well al-fucking-right then!”

Then, gun shots started ringing out from the woods at the Witch and the Viking. The rounds dropped to the ground as Hazel rose her hand to the noise. She began moving towards the direction the noise came from as her feet returned to the ground. Haldir walked slowly behind her and put the axe over his shoulder as he yelled out into the woods, “Games on boys!”

Then, Hazel lifted her arms and sent balls of fire into the woods behind the men. She meant to draw them to her. She wanted to kill them slowly with her bare hands.

As the fires closed in on them, the men ran from the woods and then Haldir stepped forward in front of Hazel.

“Batter up!” Haldir said as he swung his axe into the chest of the first man that came towards him. Then he jerked the blade out of the dying man and placed the axe over his shoulder again.

A man with a shotgun came towards Hazel and she grinned as the man dropped his gun and grabbed his throat as he choked from the invisible hands around his neck. The man’s lips turned blue and his pupils dilated as the life drained from him, then Hazel used her mind to throw him across the yard.

Another man with a knife ran from their left and lunged towards Haldir and he said “Out of the Park” as he buried the axe blade in the mans head.

Screams could be heard from the woods as the men who were too coward to face the two died from the flames.

Then a growling black wolf appeared from the woods. It was Ryan. He tried to link with Hazel’s mind but that strange voice came from her throat instead as she approached him. “I gave you a chance to leave this place. You should have taken it. You are no mate of mine. You are no one. Nothing. Just some pathetic excuse for a Lycan.” Then she held out her hand to Haldir and he handed her a short sword from its sheath across his back. The one her grandfather had given him ages ago.

An SUV full of armed Lycan pulled up to the scene and they got out from their vehicle, their eyes wide with shock at the event being played out before them.

Hazel squared off to the wolf who dropped down to an attack position and snarled at her. She put her hand up and motioned for him to come forward then the wolf leaped at her and she spun and swung the sword. It’s blade found the wolf’s side and sliced a wound into it. But Hazel was just toying with the wolf. He limped away and whimpered as he tried to lick the blood away from his wound.

The armed men started towards the fight, but Haldir put his hand up to motion for them to stop. This was a private affair.

The wolf circled Hazel. She smiled and turned to meet his changes of direction.

Suddenly, quick footsteps were heard running from the house as the creature snarled and growled. A healed chocolate brown wolf sprung from the darkness and tackled the black wolf to the ground. He put the black wolf on it’s back quickly then sank his teeth into the wounded wolf’s neck. The brown wolf shock his head as he tore at the tissue inside and then he ripped his head away and blood spurted from the hole he tore in the black wolf. Rhett spit out the tissue from his mouth and howled triumphantly over the body of his brother as it bled to death.

Hazel walked slowly over to Rhett and pet his head. Rhett began to shift back to his human form.

As the fires inside Hazel died down, the blaze that tore through the forest did as well until it barely smoldered. Hazel blinked rapidly and stumbled backwards as Rhett’s strong arms caught her.

He looked down at is wife as she hung limp from his grasp. “Are you okay sweetheart?”

Hazel looked drowsily at Rhett and said, “That was grand, but now I’m a little tired. Did we get them all?”

Rhett wiped the sweat away from her brow and said, “Yes baby,we got them.”

“Lovely,” said Hazel as she fell asleep in Rhett’s arms.

Rhett lifted her up and carried her back into the house and placed her in bed, then covered her up and gave her a kiss on her cheek. “Good night sweetheart.”
