ROYCE'S POINT OF VIEW
"Soooooooo..... are you trying to say that..... the man we've been talking about could possibly be Mr. Donovan?" I inquired, my voice tinged with confusion and trepidation. As I spoke, she shook her head vehemently, letting out an audible sigh that seemed to carry the weight of the world.
“It can't possibly be him, Royce,” she replied, her voice trembling slightly, an undercurrent of dread evident in her tone.
“He was at home, waiting for me... and honestly, there’s absolutely no way it could be him. I mean, can you imagine him instructing me to take some bizarre drugs and give it to himself? That's just inconceivable. I’m... I’m really worried, Royce. I don’t even know what to make of all this,” she admitted, biting down on her lips nervously as she looked away, her expression a blend of fear and uncertainty.
I felt a pang of concern as I watched her distress unfold. The apprehension etched onto her face was difficult to bear; she looked genuinely terrified, and in turn, my worries for her intensified. Our lives were at a tipping point, embroiled in circumstances that threatened our very existence, making it perfectly understandable for her to be so anxious and afraid.
“Like you told me, Kim... it can't be him," I reassured her, trying to keep my voice calm and steady.
“But have you had a chance to tell him about everything that’s been going on? He needs to know the truth.” Her response was swift and definitive, as she shook her head in negative fashion, almost as if the very thought was overwhelming.
“No, I haven’t... and the more I think about it, the more I feel it’s unnecessary. Honestly, I just didn’t want to add more stress to his plate. He’s dealing with so much mentally as it is, and I’m terrified that if I bring this up, it might just push him over the edge,” she explained, her eyes gleaming with unshed tears, reflecting her inner turmoil.
In that moment, I could see the struggle she was facing—the delicate balance of wanting to protect someone she cared about while also grappling with the reality of our precarious situation. It seemed as though the weight of her decision was resting heavily on her shoulders, and I wished I could alleviate some of her burden.
“You deserve to share the truth, even if it’s hard, Kim,” I said gently, hoping to encourage her to reconsider.
“It’s not just about keeping him safe; it’s about keeping both of you safe.”
"I really think you should talk to him, Kim. Seriously, it’s important that you share everything with him. He might be able to offer the support you desperately need right now," I advised, noticing the tension etched across her face. There was a palpable sense of fear in the air, and it seemed to radiate from her in waves.
"You look so restless, and quite honestly, it makes me feel anxious just seeing you like this. You may not realize it, but you appear genuinely terrified," I continued, making direct eye contact to convey my sincerity.
"Please, for your own sake, tell him what is going on and at least listen to his response. After all, this situation directly pertains to his health."
Kim took a deep breath, and I could see the conflict swirling in her eyes.
"Do you really think it’s the right thing to do?" she asked hesitantly. I nodded firmly, trying to instill some confidence in her.
"Absolutely, Kim. You owe it to yourself and to him to be honest. And if you're worried about how he might react, perhaps it would be better for you to involve his parents as well. They could help manage the situation and provide additional support. Keeping this to yourself could be detrimental, leading to unnecessary stress, and ultimately, it’s not a burden you should carry alone," I said, my voice gentle but resolute.
But she hesitated, the fear evident on her face.
"But... what if the man finds out and lashes out? What if he becomes angry and ends up hurting either you or me in the process? That's really what frightens me the most," she replied, twisting her hair nervously.
I understood her concern all too well; the prospect of confrontation loomed heavily, and it was a legitimate fear to have. However, I also knew that facing the issue head-on could bring about a resolution and possibly even healing.
"I know that prospect is frightening, but sometimes confronting uncomfortable truths is the only way to find peace, Kim. You aren’t alone in this, remember that"I said and she smiled immediately.
"Look who’s matured so much," she remarked, her eyes sparkling with pride as she looked at me.
“I’m so proud of you, kiddo. I really am. I mean, to be honest, I really needed someone to talk to.” Her voice was laced with a newfound sense of relief as she began to unwind, and I couldn’t help but smile at the transformation in her demeanor.
“I’m genuinely glad I decided to come today, Kim,” I replied, my heart swelling with happiness at the sight of her beaming face.
"It feels amazing to finally say what’s been on my mind and to see how much lighter you've become. Seriously, it’s important to share what’s in your heart. You shouldn’t keep everything bottled up inside. Talking to someone can lead to discovering solutions that you might not have considered. After all, two heads are always better than one.” My words seemed to resonate with her, and she responded with another radiant smile that lit up the room.
“You know,” she said, her tone turning slightly playful,
“at this very moment, I think you’d make a fantastic therapist. I mean, it would really suit you!” I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at the compliment, my cheeks slightly flushed with embarrassment.
“I’m never going to be a therapist, so you can quit that thought right now,” I replied, unable to hide my scoff. The image of myself sitting in a stuffy office, surrounded by books and clients, felt completely alien to me.
“What? It’s not like that’s a bad thing!" she exclaimed, amusement dancing in her eyes as she flashed me a mischievous grin. Her light-hearted spirit was infectious, and it made me laugh even more.
“I can see that you’re feeling much better since we started talking,” I said, my tone softening.
“You know what? I’m not going home today. I’m going to share this room with you, whether you like it or not!” I proclaimed playfully, and she let out a loud scoff, clearly not expecting my sudden declaration.
“Whatever,” she said, rolling her eyes in mock exasperation. But then she quickly shifted the topic, her expression turning serious for a moment.
“Have you eaten yet?”
I immediately shook my head, a pout forming on my lips as I realized I hadn’t taken the time to care for myself during our heart-to-heart. The conversation had consumed me entirely, and now I felt a slight pang of hunger setting in.
"Poor thing," she said with genuine concern in her voice.
"Come on, let’s head out. I’ll go tell the maids to prepare dinner for you." She gently took hold of my hand, guiding me out of the room, but suddenly, I gasped loudly, causing her to halt in her tracks and glance back at me.
"What happened? Did you step on something?" she inquired immediately, her expression shifting to one of focused concern as she studied my face intently.
"It's nothing serious, really. It’s just that I completely forgot I was supposed to be studying with Sophie. What if she gets mad at me for being late?" I replied, my anxiety evident in my tone. Almost instantly, she erupted into laughter, which took me by surprise and left me staring at her quizzically.
"I don’t see what's so funny about this, sis," I said, my brow furrowing in confusion as her laughter filled the air.
When her laughter finally subsided, she shook her head, still grinning.
"I know, I know… I’m just laughing because you looked so adorable when you said that. It’s wonderful to see you falling for someone, and I’m really happy that she feels the same way about you," she said, her voice warm and encouraging. A wide smile spread across my face, buoyed by her words.
"Thank you, sis," I muttered, feeling a mix of gratitude and joy at her genuine support, to which she returned my smile with a soft, sisterly gaze.
"Now come on," she urged with playful enthusiasm, "Let’s go eat—I'm absolutely starving!" Her energy was contagious, and I couldn’t help but chuckle as we both started walking away from the room, the anticipation of food momentarily alleviating my worries about Sophie.
KIMBERLY'S POINT OF VIEW
I let out a soft sigh, a smile unwittingly spreading across my face as I watched Royce sleep so peacefully. His features were relaxed in slumber, with a gentle rise and fall of his chest. In that moment, I couldn't help but realize how lucky I felt to have him in my life.
I took my time to ensure that he was completely tucked in, carefully arranging the duvet cover around him, making sure he was warm and comfortable. Once I was satisfied that he was snug, I gently slipped out of bed, conscious of not making any noise that might disturb his rest.
As I padded across the soft floor beneath my feet, I slipped on my trusty flip-flops, their familiar sound a comforting rhythm in the otherwise quiet room. I made my way out and headed toward Donovan's room, feeling a flutter of anticipation in my chest.
Ever since Royce had shared those heartfelt words with me, I had been walking on air. His candid emotions ignited a warmth inside me, filling me with a sense of joy and hope.
The mere thought of him made me smile, and I couldn’t help but beam as I turned the corner and spotted Scott standing gallantly just outside Donovan's door, looking as though he was guarding something precious.
"Doctor Kim!" he called out, his voice reflecting genuine surprise.
"Good evening, Scott," I replied, a smile lighting up my face, which he mirrored back to me, his expression warm and welcoming.
"You're not asleep yet? It’s quite late already,” he remarked, arching an eyebrow in mild disbelief as he observed me.
"I know, Scott. I just wanted to check up on Donovan before I retire for the night,” I explained, nodding my head in affirmation. He glanced back at the door thoughtfully, taking in the situation before opening the door for me.
The room was cloaked in darkness, the only source of light a small, flickering electric lamp perched on the bedside table. Its warm glow softly illuminated the space, casting gentle shadows that danced across the walls. As I stepped quietly across the floor, careful not to disturb the tranquil atmosphere, I made my way closer to the bed where Novan lay peacefully. His eyes were tightly shut, the rhythm of his breathing slow and steady, suggesting that he was caught in a deep, undisturbed slumber.
A smile crept onto my lips as I settled myself down on the edge of the bed, making every effort to remain as silent as possible, not wanting to disrupt the serene moment. My heart ached with a mix of admiration for him and concern for the struggles that seemed to linger just beyond his dreams.
"Why would anyone want to see you mad, Novan?" I murmured softly, my eyes tracing the contours of his face as I memorized the calming features that had become so familiar to me. The darkness of the room offered a sort of privacy, a space to express my worries without fear of being overheard.
"I really wish that person would just let you go; Why are they making it so difficult for both of us?" I whispered, my brow furrowing in concern as I contemplated the invisible forces that seemed to be conspiring against him, against us. It felt so unjust.
"And why does his voice sound so much like yours?" I asked softly, more to myself than to him, just as he unexpectedly flipped his eyelids open, revealing eyes that sparkled with warmth despite the darkness around us.
"Oh no, I’m sorry!" I exclaimed, my voice dropping to a whisper again, realizing too late that I might have disturbed his rest. I instinctively started to rise from the bed, eager to give him space, but before I could make my escape, he unexpectedly grasped my wrist, gently but firmly pulling me back down into his embrace.
"I wasn't actually sleeping, Amica Mea," he reassured me, his voice a smooth whisper that sliced through the quiet like a soothing balm.
"I heard every single word you spoke." The weight of his gaze made me bite my lip in surprise and a hint of embarrassment, not expecting him to be awake.
"I didn’t mean to wake you," I reiterated softly, my heart pounding a little faster as he wrapped his arms around me, enveloping me in a comforting hug. It was an embrace that spoke of understanding and connection, a sanctuary that seemed to shield us from the world outside.
“I didn’t mean to wake you up,” I repeated softly, my voice barely above a whisper, as he enveloped me in a tight embrace. His warmth was comforting, yet I could sense the tension coursing through him, a palpable anxiety laced within his hold.
“You said something...,” he murmured, his brow furrowing slightly as he pulled back just enough to look me in the eyes.
“I know that something happened when you went out, and I want you to be completely honest with me, Amica Mea. But most importantly, I need you to tell me the truth about who hit you because I've been so fking restless” His eyes bore into mine, filled with an earnest intensity that made my heart race. It felt like I was standing at a crossroads—perhaps now was the right moment to unveil the truth that had been gnawing at my insides.
“Who hit you??” he pressed again, this time his gentle pat on my back signaling an urgent plea for honesty. I could sense the deep concern etched on his face, almost palpable in the dim light of the room where shadows danced against the walls.
With a shuddering breath, I took the plunge.
“It… it was my ex-boyfriend, Nathan,” I stammered, my voice wavering.
“I had gone there to collect my things, thinking it would just be a quick visit. But the moment I stepped into his room, everything spiraled out of control. He… he tried to r@pe me.” I felt a shiver run through me as I recounted the harrowing encounter, the words tumbling out in a rush.
“I had to fight my way out of his room.”
As soon as those words left my lips, I could feel the moment shift. His hand, which had been comforting me, came to an abrupt halt. I could see the change in him; the gentle compassion that had been there was replaced by a palpable fury that seemed to radiate from him.
He pulled away from me slightly, sitting up straight, and I noticed a fierce look of anger etched onto his features—an expression I had never witnessed since I had arrived here.
“He tried to do what??” Donovan's voice cracked, the shock evident in his tone. I watched as rage flickered in his eyes, a storm brewing beneath the calm exterior he usually wore. The protective instincts that surged within him were unmistakable, and in that moment, I felt both terrified and somehow comforted.
