Chapter 39 — Katina
The moans of the wounded fill the air as I emerge from the path that led to the cave, so I stop along the way to tend to the those in need as best as I can.
As I help one of the wolves up, I feel a subtle shift in the connection that binds Marco and I together dissipating like smoke in the wind, and I know without a doubt that he has masked our bond. The hollow feeling that accompanies it, and the gaping void where our bond is supposed to be, are so strange and painful that I’m momentarily stunned.
But before I could even process the meaning behind his actions, a searing pain pierces my side that makes me gasp in agony. In that instant, I know without a doubt that Marco has been hurt.
Ignoring the pain that ravages my own body, I abruptly rise to my feet, and begin to run. Everything around me blurs as I navigate through the familiar yet unfamiliar terrain, propelled solely by my instincts and unwavering determination to find Marco.
Each step I take is driven by the love that beats within me, an unseen force urging me forward.
The path before me feels treacherous, winding through a dense forest that offers both concealment and danger.
The trees sway ominously, their leaves rustling with whispers of an impending storm. My heart pounds in my chest as I push through the underbrush, desperate to reach my mate.
Finally, my searching gaze catches a glimpse of his prone figure on the ground at the pack center, where our pack gathered for celebrations. My breath catches in my throat as I sprint towards him, fueled by a mixture of fear and love. As I draw closer, I behold a sight that shatters my very soul.
Marco lies there, whimpering in pain, his bare skin marred with dark webs of poison that cascade across his body. Each strand is a sinister mark of the evil that has befallen him. And standing just inches away, his twisted grin betraying a sick satisfaction, is Ezra.
My knees buckle beneath the weight of my despair, and I collapse to the ground beside Marco, the world around me reduced to a haze of tears and sorrow. My voice becomes an anguished cry that echoes through the hollows of the empty space, a lamentation for the pain my beloved endures.
As I trace trembling fingers over his poisoned flesh, I can feel the venomous tendrils sear my own skin. It burns, a relentless fire that mirrors the pain Marco must endure. My heart wails with every touch, every contact that reminds me of his suffering. Time seems to stand still as I clasp his hand, intertwining our fingers. I search his eyes for any sign of recognition, any spark that shows me he’s still with me. But all I find is a flicker of fading light, a desperate plea for release from this poisoned plight.
Tears stream down my face as I plead with the fates, the gods, the moon, anyone who might listen, to save him. I pour every ounce of my love, my desperate hope into every whisper, every prayer that leaves my trembling lips.
In that heartbreaking moment, as I cradle my dying mate, I am consumed by a love so fierce it transcends the limits of my physical being.
Agony pulses through my veins, each beat of my heart a relentless reminder of Marco’s poisoned state. But in the depths of my despair, an insatiable rage claws its way to the surface, eclipsing the very pain that engulfs me.
My body quivers, a tempest of emotions stirring within me. Lust for the blood of our enemies, for the man who has dared to hurt my mate, surges through my veins like a primal force.
I can feel my sanity unraveling thread by thread and I don’t put a stop to the beast I know I will unleash, as I surrender to the inevitable.
My human guise is cast aside, replaced by the embodiment of my true self, fueled by pain and vengeance.
With an anguished cry, I launch myself at Ezra. The weight of years of love and betrayal bear down on me, fueling an unbridled force that propels my limbs forward.
My paws, once gentle and tender, become weapons of wrath as they pummel Ezra's unsuspecting body.
Each slash is laced with the seething hatred and anguish that coils within my core. The forest comes alive with the symphony of his cries beneath my relentless assault. Yet, my fury does not relent. There is no mercy in my frenzied attack. He staggers, blood staining the foliage, as I obliterate any semblance of defense he might muster.
This is not a battle; it is an unleashing of clenched retribution, a storm raging through the sacred grove. I refuse to grant him even a solitary moment of respite. I will not give him the chance to comprehend the depths of his betrayal.
I unleash the full force of my fury upon him, my fangs and claws tearing into his flesh, rending it apart piece by piece. Every fiber of my being propels me forward, driving me to fight with all that I have, with all that I am. I have become the embodiment of relentless vengeance, the instrument of justice for my ravaged mate. With each vicious strike, every savage blow I rain upon Ezra, I reclaim a piece of Marco’s stolen vitality.
He writhes beneath me, a wounded animal fighting against the inevitable. But I show no mercy.
I press on, my frenzied assault unyielding. The taste of victory dances upon my tongue. And finally, as I stand tall over his bloodied and broken body, Ezra lies as nothing more than a lifeless heap at my feet.
But the bloodlust within me hungers still, unsatisfied and relentless.
Fueled by adrenaline and the intoxication of power, I charge through the forest, tearing through the ranks of rogue wolves that litter our path. Their cries of pain mix with my triumphant roars, echoing through the darkness as a symphony of retribution.
Yet, amidst the carnage, a flicker of restraint remains. A force within me keeps the other pack members safe, preserving them from the chaos that surrounds us. I may be consumed by a maelstrom of bloodlust, but I will not let it devour the innocent.
And then, as I stand amidst the wreckage of this battle, a familiar presence trickles into my mind, a faint whisper of Marco’s thoughts, making me stagger to a halt. I feel them, like gentle ripples on the surface of a tranquil pond. His consciousness stirs, his spirit fighting against the poison that threatens to snuff out his life.
In that moment, clarity pierces through the haze of my primal fury. I realize the true extent of the danger that surges within me. I am more than a beast of anger and vengeance. I am Katina, a protector, a guardian. My mission is not just to vanquish our enemies, but to save my mate.
With renewed purpose, I wrench myself away from the adrenaline-fueled haze that clouds my mind.
I heave a final breath, my audacious energy diminished, replaced by a resolute determination to channel my rage for a higher purpose.
With measured steps, I tread amidst the fallen bodies, ensuring each rogue wolf is incapacitated, but not fatally wounded. Redemption lies not in ruthless vengeance, but in the ability to distinguish justice from revenge, to honor the lives we protect.
As I survey the aftermath, the carnage that stretches out before me, my heart aches with a mixture of sorrow and pride. I made choices that stained my conscience, but they were born out of love and a fierce loyalty to my mate. In these moments of anguish, I understand that darkness can never truly extinguish the light within.
I walk back to where Marco lays still on the ground, hanging only by a thread, and pray for his survival.
And as the world fades around us, I know that I will fight, I will do whatever it takes to save him, to bring him back from the brink of death.
For within this pain and anguish lies a steadfast determination, an unbreakable bond that refuses to succumb to the darkness. I will be his strength, his beacon of hope, guiding him back to me with every beat of my shattered heart.
