Chapter 31 — Katina

I watch the clock tick relentlessly on the wall, each second that goes by elongating into a torturous eternity.

The longer Marco's meeting with Ezra goes, the more restless I become. My nerves are wound tight like a coiled spring, begging for release. Rhys, my precious little one, lies sound asleep in the nest I built for him, safe and secure–just like I’ve always intended for him–unaware of the growing weight on my shoulders.

With a sigh of both weariness and determination, I gently tuck the blanket tighter around Rhys, ensuring his warmth and comfort.

Tonight, I need a respite from the suffocating worries that plague my mind, even though my heart aches at the thought of leaving him behind with no one else in the den. I know no one in the pack will dare to sneak into our den without our permission; I still have my doubts about leaving him like that, but I need the calming presence of nature, and I do not want anyone from my old pack to see him.

Stepping out into the cool evening air, I take a deep breath, allowing the gentle breeze to soothe my frazzled nerves.

The moon hangs low in the sky, casting a silvery glow over the quiet forests. I stroll aimlessly, my footsteps echoing softly against the soil. It feels good to be outside, away from the walls closing in on me. I bask in the serenity of the night, letting its tranquil embrace wash over me. I relish the cool night air as it caresses my skin, finding solace in the stillness that cloaks the world around me. Shadows dance beneath the moon’s gentle glow, casting a sense of peace upon the sleeping city. Yet, my heart quickens as a sinister presence taints the tranquility.

My senses sharpen, tingling with an awareness that someone watches me from the darkness. My heart quickens its pace once again, as an unsettling electricity pulses through the air. I try to ignore it, hoping it’s simply a passerby lost in their own thoughts.

Unfortunately, fate has other plans.

I stand tall, refusing to let my fear show. And then, just as I suspected, there he stands–Ezra, his figure emerging from the shadows like a specter.

“Why, hello, Katina,” he purrs, his voice a venomous blend of silk and malevolence.

I force a calm facade, though my mind races with unease. “What brings you here, Ezra?” I inquire, my voice all iron determination.

A sneer curls upon his lips, revealing a dangerous glint in his eyes. “I have my reasons,” he replies cryptically, refusing to divulge his true intentions.

My spine stiffens at the enigmatic response. There is more to his presence here than meets the eye. “Why the sudden interest in an alliance with Marco’s pack?” I press.

His eyes narrow, a flicker of irritation crossing his face. “Well, my dear Katina, that is none of your concern,” he retorts, a smugness lingering in his voice.

“Though one might question Marco’s willingness to host me, if he knows who I am to you.”

My back stiffens at his implied words but I don’t let him get to me. I hold my ground, refusing to back down from his intimidation. “If you expect Marco to trust you, to consider this alliance, then I demand your honesty right now,” I assert, my voice unwavering. “I am his Luna, and my word holds sway over him and the council.”

He scoffs, a chilling arrogance emanating from him. “Very well. But know this: Marco harbors you in his pack, a wolf excommunicated by your own. You are indebted to him, but you have also endangered his pack too.” The truth of his words strikes a chord within me, a pang of guilt mingled with defiance.

“Shame on you, Ezra,” I retort, my voice colder than ice. “Marco has shown me nothing but compassion and acceptance, something your twisted soul could never comprehend. If you dare to harm him or his pack, I will be the force that ends you.”

His lips curl into a sadistic grin, his eyes ablaze with calculated cruelty. “Ah, the audacity of the so-called fallen,” he murmurs.

I square my shoulders, refusing to falter under his malevolence.

How could I have been blinded by him all those years?

“I may be excommunicated, but I have found solace, loyalty, and love in Marco’s pack,” I declare. “Their acceptance has given me strength, and I will protect them with my life if need be. You underestimate the bonds forged through compassion and understanding.”

Ezra’s laughter rings through the night, a mocking symphony that grates against my resolve. “We shall see, Katina, whether your meek pack can survive the tempest that approaches. Perhaps a duel between me and Marco would settle matters once and for all. What do you say? Shall we put his leadership to the test?”

A fire ignites within me, anger and determination simmering beneath my skin. “You truly are delusional, Ezra. If you seek his downfall, you shall find me standing as his shield. And trust me when I say, I am a force to be reckoned with. I am no longer the Katina that you know. Your arrogance will be your undoing.”

Ezra glares venomously at me, his lips parting as if he is about to say something else, when I feel a sudden presence brush against my senses. I turn to find Adrik standing at the edge of the forest, his eyes wide with suspicion, as he takes in the scene before him.

A different panic wells up within me as I wonder how much of our conversation he has heard. I hope Marco isn’t paying too much attention to my emotions because he’ll have a field day if he feels all of my panic.

“Katina, are you okay?” Concern colors Adrik’s voice as he steps closer, his gaze firmly fixed upon me.

I collect myself, offering him a nod in response, my breath still ragged from the intensity of the argument with Ezra and my panicked thoughts. “Yes, Adrik, I’m fine,” I manage to say, the words tinged with a mixture of weariness and determination. “Just a disagreement, nothing more.”

Adrik’s eyes then shift to Ezra, his gaze piercing and unwavering. “And why were you talking to the Luna that way?” he demands, his voice laced with a mix of authority and suspicion.

Ezra’s lips curl into a tight smile, portraying a hint of satisfaction mingled with a defiance that refuses to be subdued. But he remains silent, not offering a single word in reply. Instead, he turns away from us, his figure retreating back into the forest, disappearing like a ghost in the mist.

A simmering frustration tugs at Adrik’s features, his hands clenching in frustration. He turns to me, his eyes filled with concern radiating both fire and gentleness. “Come, Katina,” he insists, reaching out a comforting hand. “Let me escort you back to your den. You shouldn’t be alone right now.”

I hesitate for a moment, still shaken by the confrontation with Ezra, and then take the offered hand, finding solace in the strength of Adrik’s presence. “Thank you, Adrik,” I murmur as I allow him to guide me through the forest.

As we walk back, the forest seems to echo with a mixture of silence and whispers. The rustle of leaves underfoot accompanies the rhythm of my heartbeat, each step a reminder of the lingering unease that seeps into my bones.

How long can I hold onto the truth before everything goes to shit? I know Ezra has no good intentions, and the longer he stays here, the more opportunities there would be for him to manipulate the truth and turn Marco against me. But, how do I even tell Marco the truth? Where do I start?

The weight of the encounter with Ezra settles heavily upon my shoulders, its impact marking the path I tread. Adrik remains a calming presence beside me, casting his protective shield against the lingering effects of the confrontation. The air feels heavy, a dark omen hanging in the atmosphere. But I am resolute, fortified by a love that conquers fear. I will protect Marco and his pack with every fiber of my being. The battle ahead may be arduous, but my spirit burns fierce beneath the moon’s watchful gaze.

With each step, the air crackles with anticipation, and I prepare myself for the inevitable clash that looms on the horizon.

The den comes into view, its soft glow a beacon of respite.

“Thank you for walking me back, Adrik,” I say. “Your presence has offered a balm to a troubled soul.”

Adrik’s eyes meet mine, shining with compassion. “You don’t have to thank me, Katina,” he says, gentle yet determined. “You are my Luna, and we are bound by our shared love for Marco and the pack. I will always be here for you.”

His words wrap around me like a comforting embrace, and I am reminded of the strength within the bonds I have formed here, even if most of them are formed on a foundation of lies. In this moment of vulnerability, I find solace in knowing that I am not alone.
