Chapter 40 The Core Beneath the Ruins

Chapter 40 The Core Beneath the Ruins
The blinding light swallowed everything.

For a heartbeat maybe longer Mira felt weightless, suspended in a sea of fractured memories and impossible echoes. The world had shattered around her, but the pieces hadn’t fallen. They spun. They pulsed. They whispered.

A voice Jonas’s voice echoed through the brightness.

“Don’t be afraid, Mira. The truth always breaks first.”

Then the ground returned beneath her feet.

Her knees hit stone.

Cold. Ancient. Trembling.

Mira inhaled sharply, bracing herself as the white glow dimmed into something softer gold, muted by dust and age. Her vision steadied enough to reveal where she had landed:

A colossal cavern of glass-like rock, spiraling downward into a core of shimmering amber light. The air smelled like static and old paper, like storms locked underground. Floating tablets of crystalline memory drifted lazily in the air, their surfaces displaying flashing, shifting fragments of history faces she didn’t know, wars long erased, cities that no longer existed.

Daelan materialized beside her, coughing dryly as he pushed himself upright. “What… just happened?”

She shook her head. “I don’t know.”

But she did know.

They had fallen into the Archive Core.

The original truth.

The world before the Sanctum’s lies.

A flicker of movement made her whirl around.

Jonas.

Or… the version of him that now stood in front of a massive archway of interwoven light and shadow. He looked both more alive and more fragile than before his body outlined with pulsing violet energy, like cracks in porcelain glowing from the inside.

He didn’t look in pain.

He looked… emptied.

“Mira,” he said quietly. “You made it.”

She clenched her fists. “Where did you bring us?”

His gaze swept the cavern with a reverence Mira had never seen in him before. “To the beginning. Before the Sanctum. Before the rewriting. Before the bloodlines were altered.”

Daelan stepped in front of Mira protectively. “So this is where you want her to destroy herself?”

Jonas sighed. “Daelan, you still misunderstand. I never wanted to harm her.”

“You dragged her into a collapsing Riftspire!” Daelan snapped, fury breaking through fear.

“The Riftspire collapsed because it recognized her,” Jonas countered. “This place this core it responds to her bloodline. To her existence. It brought her here.”

Mira swallowed. “What do you want me to do, Jonas?”

He hesitated.

Then he turned toward the archway.

The ancient doors of light shimmered, slowly unfolding like petals of some colossal, luminescent flower. Beyond them, a swirling vortex of handwritten symbols and glowing constellations pulsed like a living script.

“This,” Jonas whispered, “is the First Archive. The unaltered truth. The Sanctum copied pieces of it, rewrote them, erased the parts they feared. But the original remained hidden—buried deeper than they could reach.”

Daelan took another protective step forward. “And you brought her here to open it?”

Jonas didn’t deny it.

“Her blood has the original signature,” he said. “The one the Sanctum couldn’t rewrite. She can access what no one else can.”

Mira’s voice trembled. “What happens if I open it?”

Jonas finally looked at her fully eyes flickering violet and blue in a war of identities. “The world will remember what it was. Who it belonged to. The truth of the bloodlines, the forgotten heirs, the stolen power. The Sanctum will lose everything they’ve built.”

“And you?” she whispered.

Silence.

Jonas stepped closer, light cracking across his skin like burning lines.

“The tether inside me is connected to the rewrites,” he said softly. “If the truth is restored… the tether breaks.”

“And you die,” Daelan growled.

Jonas didn’t deny that either.

Mira’s throat tightened painfully. “Jonas…”

He held up a trembling hand. “Don’t. Please don’t make this harder. I’ve been dying since the Sanctum found me. This” he gestured to the core, to the glowing truth swirling beyond the archway “is the only choice that means something.”

Daelan turned sharply to Mira. “You don’t owe the world this. You don’t owe the Sanctum a war. You don’t owe Jonas your life.”

She met his eyes dark, steady, terrified not for himself, but for her.

“I’m not doing this for them,” she whispered. “I’m doing it for the truth.”

Jonas exhaled shakily. “Mira… there’s something else I need to show you.”

The floor beneath him lit up.

A circular platform of shimmering glass rose from the ground, carrying with it floating panels that arranged themselves into a ring around him. They flickered on, displaying…

Mira’s face.

As a child.

As an infant.

Before she was even born.

Her breath caught.

“What is this?”

Jonas’s voice softened into something almost broken. “The truth about you.”

Daelan tensed. “Mira don’t look at those”

But she stepped forward.

Some truths could not be avoided.

The floating panels flickered, revealing a series of images and records the type of deep archive data only the Sanctum and Jonas could ever access. Only these weren’t manipulated. They were raw. Untouched.

And horrifying.

Mira saw a record of her blood being marked before her birth. Lines of code and genetic sequences that weren’t altered, but preserved. Locked. Untouchable.

The Sanctum had tried to rewrite her.

They had failed.

Jonas spoke quietly. “They feared you. Feared the lineage you came from. You’re descended from the original keepers of the Archive. The ones who protected the world before the rewrites.”

Mira’s hands shook. “Why didn’t you ever tell me?”

“I tried,” Jonas whispered. “But the Sanctum was already watching me. They deleted every message. Every warning.”

Daelan’s fists clenched. “So she was never ordinary.”

“No one with an unaltered bloodline ever is,” Jonas said. “But she is the last.”

The panels dimmed and drifted upward, dissolving into the shimmering vortex beyond the archway.

The truth waited.

Jonas stepped back, breathing hard, the violet glow intensifying cracks spreading across his skin like lightning under glass.

“You don’t have long,” he said. “Neither do I. The Sanctum knows the Riftspire collapsed. They know you’re here.”

Mira stepped toward him. “Jonas… come with me. We’ll find a way to free you without”

He touched her cheek cold, then warm, flickering.

“Sister,” he whispered. “You already freed me the moment you came here.”

She felt herself breaking.

Daelan moved in beside her. “I’ll stand with you, no matter what you choose.”

Jonas’s gaze flicked to him something like gratitude passing through the flickering violet.

“It has to be her,” he whispered. “She’s the key.”

The chamber rumbled.

The vortex widened.

Symbols burst into spiraling motion.

Mira took a breath that felt like a thousand doors unlocking inside her.

Then she stepped forward toward the archway.

Toward the truth.

Light flared beneath her feet, awakening something ancient in her blood. The air vibrated. The chamber reacted. The world held its breath.

Behind her, Jonas staggered his body cracking with violet fractures.

“Mira!” Daelan shoute
d, reaching for her.

She turned back.

“I’m ready.”

The vortex engulfed her hand first.

Then her arm.

Then her entire being.

And every lie the Sanctum ever told began to burn.
