Chapter 17 The Truth Spirals
Daevar’s revelation made Klishei stop struggling. She looked at him, her eyes full of questions, doubting if he was telling the truth or if Daevar was just spitting lies against Yeseus.
Daevar let go of his hold on her shirt. Her body laid still on the floor as he squatted beside her. “Legends call it the blight of the heart. Its a curse imposed to Entities whose bloodline should not be continued according to the will of the cosmic council. You can call it his secondary natural curse. Every relationship that they contract is bound to fail. Combine it with Yeseus’ immortality curse, it’s a given that it is his partner who will suffer.”
Daevar stared at her, emphasizing the word ‘partner’ in her face.
Klishei could not wrap her head around the idea that Yeseus was subject to such punishment. But why did he not tell her? How could she have known such a fact now that she was starting to develop some feelings for Yeseus?
“You still don’t believe me. I stalked you for some time, Klishei. I know that you are a smart girl. What made you a supporter of a murderer? Did you think someone like him had pure intentions when he got to you? I told you he even killed his mother and sister. You think he won’t do it to you?”
Daevar neared his face, sniffing her. “You’ve had sex with him for how many times now? Don’t hide it. I can smell his essence in you.”
When Klishei did not answer, Daevar just cackled a laugh. “I see. And in those times that you made ‘love’, did he ever express his feelings toward you?”
He didn’t. All she heard were his satisfied grunts whenever he came. He always did it inside her. And of all those times, he never did say anything aside from commanding her in bed.
Klishei shook off the doubts that were starting to form at the back of her mind. She shouldn’t be feeling this.
As an orphan, she was used to being alone and Yeseus coming in her life was the miracle that she needed. When Yeseus revealed that he had already been looking out for her ever since she was born, she realized that all those times when she always seemed to be lucky. Those accidents that she was supposed to be in—someone was actually behind it.
For the short time that she was Yeseus, he had filled the gap she had been feeling but ignoring for years.
“He’s a good man,” Klishei stuttered.
“Oh, really?”
Klishei's eyes were full of determination. “Nice try, Daevar. But I choose to believe in Yeseus.”
Daevar analyzed her answer. Slowly, an impish smirk formed in his face.
“Interesting. Really interesting.”
Then, there was a commotion outside. Seconds after, someone was shouting just outside their tent.
“Boss, boss! The Alpha is here!”
Daevar stood, his evil grin still not disappearing. Judging by his expression, he was expecting him. “Looks like you have a visitor, Klishei. Why don’t we go and greet him?”
He let out a claw and sliced the ropes off her feet. He pulled her arm, making her wince in pain as she stood forcedly. He pushed her out of the tent.
Outside, Klishei caught a glimpse of the village that she was in. Rows of gray houses with similar structures lined up next to each other. They were surrounded by gigantic trees and the gurgling of water could be heard from where the sound of the commotion was coming from.
Above, the skies indicated the sun was about to burst out any moment from now. If the sanctuary of Yeseus were placed at the top of the mountain, Daevar and his pack were situated in the valley.
When they approached the river, Daevar deliberately pushed her hard, making her trip. Her whelp made the small gathered crowd look back at them. They parted and bowed at the sight of Daevar.
As the people gave way, Klishei was stunned to see a black beast in front of her, snarling and its four legs were knee-deep in the waters of the river. She made contact with its sapphire eyes and she immediately recognized him.
“Yeseus,” she said.
The air shifted around him as the beast bowed its head. A white light enveloped him. Through the faint outline provided by the blinding light, she watched as it transformed itself back into its human form.
Yeseus was now looking at her intensely, especially upon the sight of her bloody ankles and wrists.
“Daevar, how dare you,” he growled. “Do you really wish to die in front of your pack?”
The crowd, all composed of adult-looking men, all sifted their attention to Yeseus, ready to attack at Daevar’s instruction.
“At ease, men. No one will be dying today,” Daevar said. He looked at Klishei and put out the shiny claw of his index finger.
Yeseus stepped forward. “Daevar,” he warned.
Klishei closed her eyes. She heard a faint snap. When she opened her eyes, her hands were free. She looked to Daevar and then to Yeseus who was also puzzled for a while.
Daevar helped her stand up. He then motioned for her to go towards Yeseus.
“Boss?” One of Daevar’s followers couldn’t help but speak. Daevar simply held his palm high to stop him from further asking.
“I believe you came to get her back, right? You were right, after all, Yeseus. As you have correctly pointed out, it’s not really that good if it is forced.”
He gave Klishei a light pat at her back, urging her to walk. Klishei felt like her whole life was being watched as she slowly walked towards Yeseus.
The one who was against Daevar’ decision was the youngest of them all, someone who was still to mark his third decade living, unlike the others who were already on their eighth decade onwards. He looked at the walking Klishei and beyond her, all he saw was the man responsible for the death of his clan.
The young wolf let himself be consumed by his emotions. The remnants called him the lighting stud. He saw that Klishei had her back exposed. They said a human’s body was extremely fragile. He can do it in one strike. If he can't kill the Alpha, he could atleast take down the one he adored.
He lunged without warning.
“Don’t, fool!” Daevar’s shout was late.
Yeseus, who never let his guard down, reacted swiftly. In a blink of an eye, his foot left the water and was already on the face of the boy. The young one, completely unaware of Yeseus’ true power, was sent flying to one of the trees, his back making a dent at its trunk.
The crowd erupted. Klishei screamed. Yeseus grabbed her hips and placed her over his shoulder. He leaped and the two flew over the wide river, leaving Daevar trying hard to calm his pack who was in a frenzy.
The wolf who charged at Klishei remained unmoving, blood spilling out of his mouth and eyes.
