The Watcher's POV
The Watcher's finger hovered over the trigger as six people pointed guns at each other in the abandoned subway tunnel below.
For five years, the Watcher had been preparing for this moment. Five years of watching, planning, and waiting for everyone to be in the same place at the same time.
Now Emma Martinez stared at Detective Sarah Chen in shock, realizing that Sarah had helped Marcus kill Judge Morrison. Vincent Torrino smiled like he'd won a prize. Agent Thompson kept his gun pointing at Sarah. And Marcus stood protectively in front of Emma, even though he was powerless.
They all thought they knew the truth.
They were all wrong.
The Watcher pulled out a phone and sent a quick text to Emma's number: "Emma, get down. NOW."
Down in the tube, Emma's phone buzzed. She looked at the message and her eyes went wide.
"Everyone down!" Emma screamed, throwing herself to the ground.
That's when the Watcher started shooting.
The first bullet hit the light above Vincent's head, plunging half the cave into darkness. The second bullet broke Agent Thompson's gun out of his hand. The third bullet sent Vincent's men diving for cover.
"Who's shooting?" Vincent yelled, spinning around wildly.
The Watcher jumped down from the hidden platform above, landing quietly behind Vincent's men. In the chaos and darkness, no one saw the Watcher coming.
Three quick, quiet moves. Three guys down. Vincent's relief was gone.
"Show yourself!" Vincent ordered, waving his gun around. "Stop hiding like a coward!"
The Watcher stepped into the light, and everyone in the tunnel gasped.
It was Rebecca Martinez.
Emma's allegedly dead cousin was very much alive.
"Hello, Vincent," Rebecca said calmly. "Miss me?"
Vincent's face went white. "That's impossible. I killed you myself."
"You killed my roommate, Jess," Rebecca answered. "We switched homes that night. You never checked to make sure you had the right person."
Emma stared at her cousin in shock. "Rebecca? But... but I identified your body."
"You identified Jess's body. She looked like me from behind. By the time you saw her face at the morgue, she'd been in the water for three days. Death changes how people look."
"You let me think you were dead?" Emma's voice was full of hurt and anger.
"I had to," Rebecca said, her own voice breaking. "It was the only way to protect you and gather evidence against Vincent's network."
Marcus slowly got to his feet. "You're the one who's been sending the warning texts."
"Among other things," Rebecca stated. "I've been watching all of you for months, waiting for the right moment to reveal myself."
Agent Thompson was trying to reach for his dropped gun. Rebecca shot a bullet into the ground next to his hand.
"I wouldn't," she suggested. "I've gotten very good at shooting in the past five years."
Sarah Chen dropped her weapon. "Rebecca, you have to understand—"
"I understand perfectly, Detective Chen," Rebecca interrupted. "You've been lying to everyone, including yourself."
"What do you mean?" Emma asked.
Rebecca looked at Sarah with sad eyes. "Tell them, Sarah. Tell them what really happened the night Judge Morrison died."
Sarah's hands were shaking. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"Then let me tell them," Rebecca said. "Five years ago, Detective Sarah Chen was working undercover to reveal Judge Morrison's connection to Vincent's trafficking ring. She got close to Morrison, gained his trust, and learned about his crimes."
Emma felt confused. "So Sarah was trying to stop Morrison, not help him?"
"Sarah was trying to gather evidence," Rebecca continued. "But Morrison found out she was a cop. He was going to have her killed."
Marcus's eyes widened. "That's why I found Morrison on the bridge that night. He wasn't alone. He was meeting Sarah to kill her."
"Sarah called for backup," Rebecca said. "But the backup never came because Agent Thompson was already working for Vincent. Thompson wanted both Sarah and Morrison dead so they couldn't expose the corruption in the FBI."
Vincent was getting impatient. "This is a touching story, but—"
"Shut up," Rebecca snapped, keeping her gun fixed on him. "I'm not finished."
She turned back to Sarah. "You were going to die that night. Morrison had his gun to your head when Marcus showed up."
Sarah's voice was barely a whisper. "Marcus saved my life."
"Marcus killed Morrison to save Detective Chen," Rebecca explained to Emma. "But Sarah was so shocked by what happened, she blocked out most of her memories from that night. Just like you did, Emma."
Emma's head was spinning. "So Sarah wasn't Morrison's partner. She was his victim."
"The FBI covered up the truth to protect their undercover operation," Rebecca continued. "They let everyone believe Marcus acted alone. They let Sarah believe she was guilty of murder."
Agent Thompson finally found his voice. "None of this matters. You're all going to die tonight anyway."
"Are we?" Rebecca smiled. "Vincent, would you like to know who's been feeding information to the FBI about your operations for the past two years?"
Vincent spun around to stare at Agent Thompson. "What is she talking about?"
"Agent Thompson isn't just corrupt," Rebecca said. "He's a double agent. He's been working for the FBI the whole time, gathering proof against you."
"That's ridiculous!" Thompson protested.
Rebecca pulled out a small recording device. "Would you like to hear the tapes of your talks with FBI Director Williams? The ones where you plan Vincent's arrest?"
Vincent's face twisted with rage. He turned his gun on Thompson. "You betrayed me!"
"Wait!" Thompson screamed. "She's lying! I've been loyal to you!"
"Actually, she's not lying about that," said a new voice from the tunnel opening.
Everyone turned to see FBI Director Williams walking down the stairs with a team of agents.
"Agent Thompson has been reporting to me all along," Williams verified. "Vincent Torrino, you're under arrest for human trafficking, murder, and conspiracy."
But Rebecca started laughing. "Oh, Director Williams. You have no idea what you've walked into."
Williams looked confused. "Rebecca Martinez, you're supposed to be dead."
"I'm supposed to be a lot of things," Rebecca answered. "But right now, I'm the person who's about to expose the biggest corruption scandal in FBI history."
She pulled out a thick file folder. "Would you like to explain to everyone why you ordered Agent Thompson to let Vincent's trafficking ring operate freely for the past three years?"
Williams went pale. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"You've been taking money from Vincent to look the other way," Rebecca said. "Thompson wasn't working for you. He was working for me, gathering proof of your corruption."
The truth hit Emma like lightning. Director Williams was the real criminal. Thompson had been trying to reveal him. And Rebecca had been arranging everything from the shadows.
But Vincent wasn't finished. In the chaos of discoveries, he'd quietly moved closer to Emma.
"Nobody moves," Vincent growled, pressing his gun to Emma's head. "Or the witness dies."
Emma felt the cold metal against her head. After everything they'd been through, everything they'd learned, it all came down to this moment.
"You can arrest me," Vincent continued. "But Emma Martinez will never testify against anyone. Because she'll be dead."
That's when Emma heard a sound that made her blood freeze.
The click of multiple guns being cocked.
She looked up to see twenty more of Vincent's men surrounding the tunnel from every entry.
Vincent smiled. "Did you really think I'd come here without backup? Did you think I'd trust my freedom to one crooked FBI agent?"
Rebecca's face went white. "That's impossible. We caught all your men."
"You captured the men I wanted you to capture," Vincent said. "The real army was waiting for my signal."
Emma realized with rising horror that Rebecca's plan had failed. Vincent had been playing them all along.
They were surrounded, outnumbered, and out of choices.
But that's when Emma remembered something Vincent had said earlier. Something that didn't make sense.
"Vincent," Emma said slowly. "How did you know I would recover my memories tonight? How did you know I'd remember seeing Sarah with Marcus?"
Vincent's smile faltered for just a second.
"Because," Emma continued, her voice getting stronger, "I never actually saw Sarah that night. My memories are still blocked. I was just guessing based on what you told me."
Vincent's face went dark. "What are you saying?"
"I'm saying you lied about Sarah being there. Which means you know who the real second shooter was."
Emma looked around the tunnel at all the faces looking at her.
"The person who helped Marcus kill Judge Morrison is standing here right now. But it's not Sarah Chen."
Vincent's gun shook against Emma's head.
"It's you, isn't it, Vincent? You killed your own partner."
