Chapter 51 THE TUESDAY THAT WASN'T SUPPOSE TO HAPPEN
ETHAN POV — FIRST PERSON AGE 21
It was a Tuesday when I ran into her outside the bookstore.
Not a Friday and that part was important, because friday was our thing — hers and mine, the established ritual, the expected overlap. Running into her on a Tuesday meant neither of us was supposed to be there. It meant coincidence. It meant the universe rather than habit had put us in the same place at the same time and there was something almost embarrassingly human about how much that mattered to people.
I had been standing outside that bookstore for eleven minutes when she came around the corner.
She was walking fast the way people walk when they're cold and distracted and running slightly late for something. Head down. Coffee in one hand. The strap of her bag slipping off her shoulder every few steps and she kept pushing it back up without breaking stride — the particular rhythm of someone who has made peace with a minor inconvenience rather than stopping to fix it.
She almost walked into me.
Not quite.
She pulled up short about two feet away and looked up and there was that half-second — that genuine, unperformed half-second of surprise — where her face did exactly what faces do when they encounter something unexpected and pleasant.
Something opened brriefly.
Then she composed it.
"Ethan."
"Hey." I let it land simply. Didn't reach for more than that.
"What are you doing here on a Tuesday?"
I held up the book in my hand. A used copy of The Brothers Karamazov I'd bought three days ago specifically for this moment. Dog-eared. Worn. The kind of copy that suggested history.
"Returning this. They have a trade-in thing."
She looked at it. Then at me. "You finished it already?"
"I don't sleep much," I said.
That was true.
I want to be clear about that — not everything I gave her was constructed. Some of it was just accurate. I don't sleep much. Never have. My brain doesn't quiet the way other people's brains quiet at the end of a day. It just shifts registers. Keeps working on whatever it was working on, in the dark, without my permission.
I had learned to find that useful rather than fight it.
She didn't know that yet — didn't know what kept me awake or what I did with those hours. But the detail landed the way true details always land. With a weight that manufactured details don't have.
She pushed her bag strap up again.
"I was just going in," she said. "I have twenty minutes before I have to be somewhere."
"I'll walk in with you," I said.
Not — can I, not — do you mind. Just a statement of what was going to happen. Confident without being presumptuous. The difference between those two things is about two degrees of tone and most people spend their whole lives unable to find it.
She turned toward the door.
I held it open.
Inside she went straight to the back shelves the way people go straight to the thing they came for when they only have twenty minutes. I followed at a distance that was close enough to be together and far enough to not be hovering.
She pulled out a book. Checked the back. Put it back.
Pulled out another.
"What are you looking for?" I asked.
"Something I haven't read." She said it like it was simple. Like it wasn't actually the hardest possible brief.
"What was the last thing you read that surprised you?"
She thought about it for a second. Really thought — not the performative pause people do when they want to seem considered but the actual interior thing, the going away briefly and coming back.
"Stoner," she said. "By John Williams."
I knew the book. Had read it in two sittings the previous year during the period I was building my reading profile — the list of books a certain kind of thoughtful, literary young man would have read, that I had actually read, thoroughly, so the references would be real when they came up.
"Nobody warns you about that book," I said.
She turned and looked at me.
"No," she said. "They really don't."
We stood in the back of the bookstore for seventeen minutes.
She missed whatever she was supposed to be at.
I know because at some point she took out her phone, checked the time, and put it back in her pocket without saying anything. Without excusing herself. Without doing the thing people do when they've decided the thing in front of them is better than the thing they were going to.
She just stayed.
And I let her make that decision completely on her own.
Didn't push. Didn't angle. Didn't do anything except be exactly the person she had decided I was over five Fridays — the person who asked interesting questions and didn't need to fill silences and treated her intelligence like the most ordinary and expected thing in the world.
When she finally said she had to go she was already at the door before she turned around.
"There's a lecture at Columbia on Thursday," she said. "Criminal psychology. You'd probably find it interesting."
She said it casually.
Like it wasn't an invitation.
It was absolutely an invitation.
"What time?" I asked.
"Seven."
"Okay," I said.
She nodded once and pushed through the door and was gone and I stood in the back of the bookstore holding The Brothers Karamazov and I felt the plan move forward one clean, precise step.
She had just asked me out.
She thought it was her idea.
It was never her idea.
But she would never know that.
And that was exactly the point.
