The Alpha's Predicament
Caden's POV
As I sat in my chambers, the burden of responsibility felt like a hundred-ton boulder. As I idly thumbed through one file after another the only sound in the room was the rustle of papers. However, I wasn't interested in any of them. The reports, plans, and alliances I was supposed to review were far from my thoughts.
No, something much more personal was consuming me at the time, not the pack's future. The Council's words were stuck in my head. There was no space for disagreement or skepticism because of the unity with which they had spoken.
It was their insistence that I follow his father's path. Strengthen the bonds between the pack's mate with Ivy and consummate the union. In my ears, their words reverberated like an unrelenting drumbeat, getting louder with each blow.
They all anticipated that I would follow my late father's wishes without hesitation or question. In actuality, though, I was unable to do it. It was not something I wanted to do. Yes, Ivy was…She was calculating and cold just like I had been taught an Alpha shouldn't be.
She lacked any tenderness to describe warmth in her eyes and compassion in her deeds. I felt suffocated by the thought of marrying her, being married to her, and sharing a life with her. I reclined in my chair, staring at the jumbled files before me, the sound of my breathing too loud in the otherwise silent room.
I tried to trace the edges of a document I haven't read yet but it didn't help. The letters were hazy in front of me. Emerald was the only picture that came to mind. Her gentle smile and her unwavering concern for me were unlike anything anyone had ever shown. Her generosity, her resilience, and the way she carried our child in her womb.
Not only did I love Emerald but I also cared for her. I had initially tried to ignore it burying the emotions deep in the hopes that they would go away. But when love is as intense and unadulterated as what I felt for her it doesn't go away so quickly.
My dreams were plagued by the memories of our shared moments and how her presence made everything seem right in a world that frequently felt like it was falling apart. However, there was an issue, wasn't there? Already I could hear the voices of the Council once more.
“You and Ivy have to mate Caden. For the good of the pack”.
What most frightened me was that phrase: “..for the good of the pack.”It had nothing to do with what I wanted or even what was right. It was all about controlling power and forging an alliance that would support the strength of our pack.
That was made clear by the council.
Everything would be lost if I did not mate with Ivy before my coronation. I'd be stripped of my Alpha title. The pack would stop respecting me. Everything that my father had put so much effort into building would be lost to me. But I had to face the reality. Emerald was who my heart yearned for.
I couldn't bring myself to betray her in that way no matter how many times I reminded myself that I had to act in the pack's best interests. It felt like a betrayal of all I stood for to choose Ivy as my partner when my heart belonged to someone else.
It seemed to me that I was betraying the pack's very essence. In an attempt to suppress the frustration that rose inside of me, I wiped my face. This made me unprepared. For an alliance, I wasn't prepared to sacrifice everything especially if it meant leaving behind someone I loved very much. But what was my option?
There would be terrible repercussions if I didn't wed Ivy. The pack would break apart. The council was going to turn against me. I would lose the title of Alpha. I closed my eyes tightly attempting to control my breathing. A part of me wanted to walk away from everything and follow my heart tossing the papers across the room. However, the pack required me.
Despite how much it hurt I couldn't disregard my obligations. As a great Alpha, my father had prioritized the needs of the pack over his own. It was now my turn to carry on his legacy by putting myself in his position. However, how could I be expected to follow a path that had been predetermined for me by another person, a path that so obviously went against my innermost feelings?
The walls seemed to be closing in on me. No obvious answer existed. No flawless response. Every choice seemed like a painful sacrifice and every option felt like a compromise. And then there was Emerald.
I could already see her smiling warmly and the light in her eyes as she talked about the future and our future together. She had our child inside her. My child. What other option could I have? How could I decide on a life with Ivy when the woman I loved was already waiting for me and inextricably bound to me?
There it was, however, the group, the future, the title, the obligation which was more significant than any of my desires. I tightly gripped the desk edge, my knuckles turning white. I would lose everything if I did not mate with Ivy.
The pack would fall into disarray. I would never be forgiven by the council. Before my eyes, my father's legacy—all the efforts he had made to increase our strength and influence—would fall apart. However what sort of Alpha would I be if I sacrificed the one thing that mattered to me?
What kind of ruler would I be if I forfeited the person I loved to keep up a show of strength? I could not. Not me. However, the question persisted, the conflict between obligation and desire bearing down on my chest like a heavy iron object.
Was I willing to sacrifice everything, including my title, for the woman I loved? Was I strong enough to reject the Council? Was I strong enough to put love before the pack? I'm not sure. However, I couldn't remain here mired in these ideas indefinitely. A way out had to exist, a means to reconcile being with Emerald while still defending the pack.
However, the way ahead was unclear, and each step I took only made me feel more uncertain. But there was one thing for sure. I couldn't continue to act like I knew everything. I was unsure of what to do. All I knew was that no matter how much the pack required me to ignore my heart, I couldn't.
I had lost my sense of what it meant to be Alpha for the first time since I had replaced my father.
