Fifty-six

Zach arrived at the location in which Jeffery wanted him to go and he saw Maisie on the floor bleeding.

“Oh look. The lovesick boy came.” Jeffery said with a laugh. “And with twenty minutes to spare. Tell me, how many traffic laws did you break.”

“I lost count after the first ten.” Zach replied as Jeffery let out a laugh.

“Then let's get to business I am sure that you would like Maisie to leave here soon so we should start.” Jeffery said as he stood up and walked to Zach holding his gun out. “I would love to shoot you, but it would not be satisfying enough.”

“Then what do you want to do now.” Zach asked Jeffery.

Jeffery stopped in front of Zach “Well, I would love to beat you into a pulp first.” Jeffery said as he hit his gun against Zach's head as Zach fell.

“Come on Zach. With your ability to survive being hit by a car, you should remain standing when I hit you with the butt of a gun.”

"Well, I should but I prefer to just kill you.” Zach said as he removed his gun from his back pocket and shot Jeffery on the leg. Jeffery went down as Zach stood quickly and shot Jeffery's hand which he was using to hold the gun. Then he kicked the gun far away from Jeffery then left Jeffery moaning in pain.

Zach stumbled to Maisie as he was used his hand to clean the blood from his eye. “Mase, are you okay.”

Maisie opened her eyes to see Zach kneeling by her side. “Jeffery.”

“He is down.” Zach replied as he drew Maisie close to hug her, but she let out a whimper in pain as Zach quickly left her alone. “Shit! I am sorry. Don't worry. The cops are on their way.” Zach said Maisie smiled at Zach. “My knight in an Armani suit.”

“In case you are not feeling pain. I should let you know that you are pretty bruised up. I failed in my job of being your knight.” Zach snorted.

“No! You came just in the nick of time. My answer is yes. I will marry you.”

“Now I know for a fact that you are delusional. I will get your answer from you when I know for a fact that your brain is not scrambled.” Zach said as he heard sirens.

“Can you free Betty from her chair?” Maisie asked Zach but Zach shook his head.

“No. It would serve as evidence against Jeffery. Besides, I don't want to leave your side.”

“You are just doing this to punish her, aren't you?” Maisie asked.

“No comment " Zach replied as Maisie chuckled weakly and angry noises came from Betty.

“Well, Jeffery is going to prison certainly.” Cassidy said as he walked beside Zach to Maisie's room.

“At least we are done with him.” Zach said as he opened the door of Maisie's room and saw Maisie talking to a doctor with tears in her eyes. “What is wrong?” Zach asked in alarm.

“I was three weeks pregnant.” Maisie said.

“Mase. That is good news...” Zach said happily then realized the past tensed. “Was?”

“I lost the child when Jeffery kicked me. I lost our child.” Maisie said as she broke down sobbing.

Zach moved to her side as he petted her. “It will be okay. We will be fine.”

“our next pregnancy will be planned, and it will be after our wedding.” Maisie said when she could control her tears.

"Wait, a wedding?” Zach asked...

“Well yeah. I did say yes, didn't I?” Maisie said with a small smile.

Zach looked at the doctor and the doctor smiled. “Yes, she is okay... Apart from the bruises, she is perfectly fine. No internal injuries, no concussions although she needs to be confined to a bed for the next seven days. Her stress levels are all over the place.”

“We are getting married?” Zach asked Maisie.

“Yes, we are.” Maisie confirmed.

“So, you get to have a happy ending with a person who framed your brother," Malcolm said from the door as Zach glared at him.

“How did you enter.” Zach asked.

"Through the door. I cannot believe you chose her over your brother. He is going to jail. Don't you worry about him?” Malcolm rages.

“Well, when that brother is responsible for almost killing me and succeeded in killing my child then yes, I worry. I worry why the system doesn't just kill him.” Zach said.

“What?” Malcolm asked with his face pale.

“I don't care about somebody who I trusted, and he betrayed me and went after those I love. Because of him, I will never know my first child.” Zach started but Maisie's hand squeezed his hand. “we will not talk about this now. Not when it is making Maisie agitated.”

“She was not pregnant.” Malcolm denied.

“Excuse me, sir, but she was. If you like. I could show you our results " the doctor offered.

“Let's go see the results.” Malcolm said.

“And by the way, Father. When you are done seeing the results, you can leave. I don't ever want to see you anywhere near Maisie.” Zach said as his father stared at him in shock.

“Zach.” Maisie said.

“No, I won't allow him to upset you more.”

“He is your family.” Maisie argues “No, you are.” Zach said. “It is time for us to live our happily ever after.”

Maisie smiled at that. “I love you, Zachary Stephens.”

“And I, you Crazy.” Zach said as he kissed Maisie.

“I will leave you two alone.” Cassidy offers as he wanted to step out “Wait," Zach said, and when Cassidy turns to look at them, Zach continues.

“Tell us everything about you being a spy and why you are in danger.”
