Thirty-seven
When Maisie opened the door to Zach's apartment, she knew that Zach would have done a surprise for her. But what she saw was not the kind of surprise she had thought of.
Maisie heard Betty exclamation of “holy shit " but she didn't turn to look at her, she didn't do anything at all. She couldn't do anything. All she could do was to continue to stare at the spot where her world crashed even though Zach had jumped away from Vivi. All she could do was stare at the place where her heart had been broken. When her gaze went blurry, she knew she had to leave very quickly before Zach would come to her. She was sure that he has a very good explanation of why his lips were in Vivi's own, just like they were in hers earlier that day...
At that thought, a sob broke out from her throat as she quickly turns and ran to the elevator. Betty was right beside her. That proved that Betty would always be by her side even though she knew that her best friend would have loved nothing more than to stay behind and rip Zach a new asshole.
She loved Zach's elevator because it was very fast and this she appreciated once again when the door of the elevator close just as soon as Zach reached it. A second later and Zach would have been able to stop the elevator from closing. Her friend was swearing a mile streak, but Maisie's mind couldn't concentrate on what Betty was saying all she could think about was Zach's lip on Vivi's. Right now, she needs to get away from Zach as far as possible and she was also grateful that there was only one elevator that led to Zach's private floor. This means that this elevator had to stop on the floor before it goes back up.
As soon as the door opened on the ground floor, Maisie was already half running and half walking back to where she parked Zach's car.
When she got there, Betty stopped her from entering the driver's seat. “Honey, give me the key. Let me drive.” Betty said softly.
Maisie released the keys because she knew that even if Betty didn't know where she was going, she was going to get them as far away from there as possible and within few minutes too because she likes to drive fast.
As soon as Maisie strapped down. Betty hit the accelerator and the flesh off, which was good because Zach had just come out of the building. Maisie knew that her friend would take care of her, so she rests her head against her window as hot tears began to run down her cheeks. This is what she gets for falling in love with the wrong man. She had always known he would hurt her, either purposely or not, and yet she couldn't help herself. She still fell for him only to have her heartbroken. She wished she had listened to her brain, not her heart.
“Maisie, we need to change cars, or he would be able to trace us.” Betty said as Maisie raised her head and laugh.
“Only you Betty.” Maisie said, crying and laughing at the same time.
"Only me what?” Betty asked.
“Only you can make me laugh even when I feel like my heart is ripping into shreds.” Maisie said.
"Don't worry honey,” Betty croons. “We will fix your heart and it will be good as new but there is no plastic surgeon alive who would be able to repair the damage I would do to him the next time I see him.” Betty said with her voice thickening with rage.
“Let it go, Betty.” Maisie said resting back on the window.
“He made my best friend cry. The only 'letting go' any of us would do is to make him 'let go' of his life. If he knows what was good for him, he would have remained in that coma.” Betty growled and Maisie winced, but Betty didn't hear, she just went on. “I mean what is the use of leaving comatose state only to wake up, live for a while and die again? Because he is surely going to die after what he did.” Betty said as she parked the car near a bus stop.
“Maybe he has a good explanation for this.” Maisie said silently but Betty glare at her.
“Don't you dare.” Betty snapped at her friend.
“What shouldn't I dare.” Maisie asked as she leaves the car while cleaning her face.
“Don't you dare find an excuse for him to get away with what he has done. I get that you love him, and you are a bleeding heart but that is why you have me to toughen you up.” Betty said slamming the car door hard as if it was Zach.
“Maybe...” Maisie started.
“If you had seen them in a hug, you could have your doubts and I will let you. He was playing exchanging saliva with a girl who was certainly not you. Being in a relationship means that he is only allowed to play that game with one person and that person is you.” Betty said as Maisie nods.
“Betty, what should I do?” Maisie asked her friend in tears.
“I suggest, you sit and think about everything that happened before you make any decisions. What I am going to do is guide you to a bus, stop in front of a hotel, check you in using my name. I am sure he doesn't know it and then go to your apartment and get some clothes for you since my carry-on case is with me. I will also get your baseball bat in case he manages to find us and doesn't get the meaning that he should stay away, I am sure I can tell him to, then I will send for my clothes tomorrow. Then find a place to live because there is no way I will leave you alone in this place with him.” Betty explained as Maisie hugged her.
“Thank you, what would I do without you.” Maisie asked Betty.
“You would survive then you will shine just like you always do. Now all you need to do is to get over him.”
“I am not sure that is as easy as you make it seem.”
“Please, it is. All you need is a stripper to help you forget things.”
“No strippers.”
“Fine. We will go with the next best thing. One nightstand. I am sure you can find a hook up somewhere.”
“I don't want another man.” Maisie said as they entered a bus.
“Of course, you don't. You are nursing a heartbreak, still, nothing will heal you faster.”
“Thanks, but no thanks.” Maisie said.
“You are so annoyingly responsible but fine.” Betty conceded.
