Elena Weakens
Elena Weakens
Sarah's POV
David Park had just fired his crossbow when the emergency lights came on.
The arrow struck the wall where my head had been a second before as I rolled sideways. The two boys in the pool were barely above the water, as I could see in the faint red light.
"Elena!" I yelled into the night. "Where are you?"
I could hardly hear her voice when it returned. "I can't... hold on much longer, Sarah."
I saw her then. For a brief moment, all three of Elena's copies were visible in the red emergency light. However, they now appeared to be ghosts. I was able to see through them.
"You're dying," I muttered.
"The split... it's taking too much energy. I feel like I'm melting.
David Park was filling his crossbow with another arrow. "Detective, your paranormal girlfriend is unraveling. similar to everything else in your life.
My phone rang once more. My sister was crying so much that I could hardly comprehend her.
"The guys at Tommy's school have bombs, Sarah! Because they will blow up the entire cafeteria with all the children inside, the police are unable to approach."
Elena's faded copies caught my eye. I watched David Park prepare to shoot the boys who were drowning. With my sister's frantic voice, I glanced at my phone.
"You must make a decision, Elena. Not everyone can be saved.
"What do you mean?"
"Stop dividing yourself. Choose one target and give it your all to stop them.
Like dying candles, Elena's three copies flickered. "But if I stop watching the other two killers..." Sarah said.
"They'll kill more people. I am aware. However, everyone dies if you do.
Aiming his crossbow at the boy who had the arrow in his shoulder, David Park chuckled. Detective, you have ten seconds to make up your mind. You can either watch these children drown or answer your phone and attempt to save your nephew.
At that moment, an incredible event occurred. Suddenly, Elena's three copies came together to form a single, solid person. She seemed to have been there the entire time, appearing directly behind David Park.
"Wrong choice, David," Elena said.
Elena was quicker than David as he spun around. Grabbing the crossbow, she smashed it in her hands as if it were paper.
"How did you—" David began.
"I chose you," Elena stated plainly. "You pose the greatest threat."
As if he were weightless, Elena threw David across the pool area. He struck the wall with force and remained motionless.
However, Elena passed out as soon as she assisted me in removing the two boys from the water.
"Elena!"
Her skin was even paler than usual, but she was solid once more. Her silver eyes were grayish and dim.
"I'm okay," she muttered. "But Sarah, I can't watch Mike Foster or Susan Cole anymore because I'm only concentrating on one target."
A text message buzzed on my phone. Agent Martinez sent it this time.
"Sarah, I located your nephew. Although the elementary school attack is real, the college killers have nothing to do with it. Two distinct groups of hunters. Elena must decide between elementary school and college.
I was ill. "Can you split yourself again, Elena?"
Elena fell back down after attempting to sit up. "No. I nearly died over that. I can't be in two places at once.
"How about Mike Foster and Susan Cole?"
"Students are still being killed. Susan has locked fifteen children in the basement of the library. Mike is killing anyone who tries to leave the parking lot after blocking all of the exits.
I assisted Elena in standing up. She was trembling.
I inquired, "How many kids at the elementary school?"
"Two hundred. There are enough explosives for the Hunters to destroy the entire structure.
"And how many students are still at the college?"
Elena focused and closed her eyes. "Fifty, perhaps. The majority escaped during the initial assault, but those who remain are confined.
Two hundred elementary school children or fifty college students.
Tommy, my nephew, attended that elementary school.
However, these college students were staring at me as if I were their only chance.
"What would happen if we went to the elementary school, Elena?"
"Mike Foster and Susan Cole will most likely murder everyone who remains here. Because they have faith in adults, college students are easy prey.
"And if we stay here?"
"With all those young children inside, the Hunters at the elementary school will blow up the building."
Tommy, who was only six, was on my mind. who referred to me as his hero and drew me pictures.
I considered the college students who were merely attempting to learn and were unaware that there were monsters like the Hunters.
Elena, who hardly had the strength to stand, came to mind.
I said, "There must be another way."
Elena gave a headshake. "I apologize, Sarah. Making difficult decisions is sometimes necessary to be a hero.
My phone rang. Once more, it was phony Torres.
When I responded, his phony voice said, "Detective Chen." "I'm currently at the elementary school. Through the cafeteria window, I can see your nephew. Adorable youngster. keeps inquiring as to when Aunt Sarah will arrive to save him.
"Give him up. Instead, take me.
"Oh, I'll take you. You must first make a decision. I'll let the kids go if you come to the elementary school by yourself. I'll blow up two hundred kids if you stay at the college."
"How can I be sure you'll honor your commitment?"
False Torres chuckled. "You don't. However, what options do you have?
Elena was struggling to keep her eyes open when I looked at her.
"Elena, can you deal with Mike Foster and Susan Cole if I go to the elementary school?"
"In my state? One of them, perhaps. Not both.
"What if we give the FBI a call?"
"It's still five minutes until Agent Martinez arrives. In five minutes, Susan Cole can murder fifteen children.
I tried to think while I closed my eyes. Someone had to figure out a way to save everyone.
Elena took hold of my arm at that moment.
"I just realized something, Sarah. There is something significant regarding the Hunters.
"What?"
"They're always weak. One individual dominates every Hunter group. The others will disintegrate if the leader is killed.
"Who is in charge?"
Elena's gaze expanded. "This Torres isn't phony. It's not Mike Foster, Susan Cole, or David Park.
"Then who?"
Elena's silver eyes were filled with fear as she gazed at me.
"The leader has been observing us the entire time, Sarah. The one in charge of organizing everything. Who knew when and where we would be?
"Elena, who is it?"
She took hold of my phone and pointed out the number from which the phony Torres had been phoning.
"This is Agent Martinez's number, Sarah."
My blood froze. I had been speaking with an FBI agent. Elena claimed to have total faith in that person.
The person who was supposed to assist us in five minutes.
Elena's voice was hardly audible. "Sarah, Martinez isn't coming to our aid. She is the Hunters' leader. And from the start, she has been deceiving us."
My phone rang at that very moment.
Agent Martinez was the one.
"Sarah," she s
aid over the speaker, "I'm at the college. Just where are you? I'm prepared to assist.
Elena and I exchanged horrified glances.
The trap was closing in on us.
